Re: Tuesday, October 16, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
That was nice to see REALLY BIG SPORTS STARS completed in the first segment with no jumping out of it and all three players scoring at least one in it.
Ouch on the match having double 6000 misses on Daily Doubles. Prairie gave it a good run trying to make up for losing the farm in the J! round while Alan tried to put the hammer down with his huge 13200 to 800 to minus 400 lead at DD2 early in the round.
Playing the what if game: If Prairie had not insisted on “please” in what seemed like each time she selected a clue then perhaps there would have been time to see the two clues not played. Her deficit for the FJ! round? $3600. The value of the clues not seen? $3,600.
Like many others here who will report the same, just “Tombaugh” (plenty of Archive hits) was enough to solve the FJ! clue. “Underworld” was another reasonable path to getting it right. Going from “horse” to Pegasus? I’m sure Hila will find company here for that one as well.
If I’m playing triple carnival age game and have to be within five for the combined ages, my guess would be 160. Alan is a confirmed 59, thanks to the online article below I would guess Hila is older, and my apologies to Prairie if I’m wrong as I’m taking over 40.
Many shows are clearly under 100 for the combined age tally, so nice to have a game sometimes with no whippersnappers.
For the name game: Alan’s win makes it 8 in a row won by a man whose name starts with A and has 4 letters in it.

An article about Hila Saxer from the Observer-Reporter by Brad Hundt:
Spoiler
For decades, Hila Saxer has been one of the thousands of people who shout out the answers to questions when “Jeopardy!” airs on weeknights.
So it was an easy next step for the South Franklin resident to take the online test that can propel the rank-and-file “Jeopardy!” viewer into being a contestant. About 80,000 people take the test every year, but only about 400 of them are finally chosen to be on the long-running game show.
Saxer, much to her amazement, turned out to be one of them.
Her appearance on “Jeopardy!” will be airing at 7 p.m. Tuesday on WPXI-TV. It was taped in August and, as is customary for game-show contestants, Saxer cannot reveal anything about the outcome. She can say unequivocally, though, that she was astounded she was selected.
“I was truly floored,” said Saxer, who is a retired rehabilitation counselor and employment specialist for people who are deaf. “It was really fun. It was a great experience, and I left feeling like, ‘Oh my god, I met Alex Trebek.’”
A viewer of “Jeopardy!” since she was “a little kid” when Art Fleming was the host, Saxer took the online test, and then promptly forgot about it when she didn’t get a response. She did eventually hear from staff of the show, however, who invited her to auditions in Cleveland in June. That included another written test and a stand-up audition.
Again, when she heard nothing from them, Saxer assumed she had gone as far as she was going to go. Then, in July, she was invited to fly out to Los Angeles to be a contestant.
After some deliberation – contestants have to pay their own way – Saxer decided to make a weeklong trip of it, and was accompanied by her daughter-in-law for the journey in August.
“I would describe it as fun and terrifying, thrilling and exhausting,” Saxer said. “It’s not like being at home.”
One of Saxer’s cousins was a contestant on “Jeopardy!” in the 1960s, and her interests make her a “Jeopardy!” natural. She enjoys classical music and operas, is a reader and avidly fills in crossword puzzles. While some viewers make it a lifelong goal to get on the show, repeatedly filling out the online test and going to auditions, Saxer made it on her first try. And though contestants sometimes have dollar signs in their eyes, Saxer decided to enjoy being on “Jeopardy!” whether she won anything or not.
“You have to view it as a whole experience,” she explained. “Just embrace the experience and have fun.”

I feel bad for Prairie but honestly, that DD was way overvalued at $1000. Maybe she over-thought it?
And Alan - maybe he didn't hear the part of the clue "under the letter T"?
Two big goofs - but Prairie was the one that paid the price.

I quickly went to the right area of the solar system, but decided "carried... to the underworld" sounded more appropriate for Charon. Ah, well.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

Guessed Mars, because I know it has several named features. I thought Pluto was booted out of the solar system about 10 years ago.

Re: Tuesday, October 16, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
After yesterday's negative experience, I was hoping to get today's FJ right to at least put that behind me. But no, with nothing I could think to go on, I said something else.
Good to see Alan pull off another nice win.
Spoiler
At least today maybe I won't have to see all the "Did ANYONE actually miss this?" posts that come after me being honest about not having heard of the correct response.

Took five seconds to pick up Tombaugh, but no trouble after that.
Alan has more than made up for my disappointment in Alex losing late last week; he's been just as much fun to watch! Congrats on win #3, and here's hoping he can keep up the strong performance.

Ran the "Ends in an F Sound" category
Animal/vegetable/mineral was NHOI all the way down for me. "Red sorrel" could be any of those in the top box.
3/5 in War Fare (missed "ration card" and "Red Cross"), which is good for me.
Unusually, I had no Lach Trash today, although I did get the "thermography" DD right.
If this FJ! had a TOM, then I failed to see it. "Body" led me away from guessing one of the planets, but I didn't know what non-planet body to guess.

Just having Tombaugh should've been sufficient. Spotting the Underworld made it teen level.

I didn't get it by 'Tombaugh' per se, I just flat out knew what the 'Tombaugh Regio' is. (It's the heart)
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Re: Tuesday, October 16, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Gotta love the way Prairie looked for an early haymaker (age appropriate euphemism, lol). Too bad they didn't both hit their big wagers and cost the show another $18K with the payoff and the cover bet in FJ (or is it $12K? - I'm figuring the payout plus the doubling to cover?)
It does seem like a run of easy FJ's the last 12 days, but the contestants went 16/30 the last two weeks with two triple solves and two skunks. That seems to be about spot on. I wasn't sure about any of my 8 correct guesses the last two weeks until the reveal whereas the last two nights have been just lock and load. I don't think boardies need to panic about the clues getting too soft - we have some smart boardies overthinking or just getting blindsided.
Tombaugh was all I needed to ID the fake planet. Thankfully we were spared the inevitable horrors of puns about the 7th planet.

Re: Tuesday, October 16, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Tombaugh meant nothing to me. The clue initially left me blank; I was trying to connect something in the solar system to Norse mythology and kept coming up empty. First wrote down "moon" just to have something and then at the last possible moment said "aw, heck" and shifted gears correctly on the basis of "underworld." I'll take it. Not a good Coryat today, though, with particularly bad neg on the city Lewis and Clark left from.
