Re: Friday, October 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Erik has previous experience this year competing under pressure with an audience watching and a competitor to his left & right:
Good week for Erik having a NYT crossword puzzle published yesterday.
Yeah, thanks J!6 for not having the categories as presented on the show. My scoresheet weeps.
Alan needed to work a little more on finding DDs and then he could have returned next week as DD2 & DD3 were not difficult.
The FJ! category is what I like to see when I have a 10 streak going and the clue let me join the gentlemen to a nice close to the week.
Erik ended the streak of guys with first name “A” winning while the 4-letter name marathon continues.
It was very typical of Alex to open the show with a hair remark.

I may have missed Monday's "ridiculously easy" FJ but I'm 3/5 this week and that's fine for me.
I haven't heard of either of those moves' names before but the Japanese sounding words led me to guess the correct response.
Congrats to Well Dunn on a good runn and being 6/6 on FJs. Good luck to him in the ToC.

I always love it when the winner holds their poker face until the reveal.
Re: Friday, October 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Ran Smoke, 4/4 in State Lines, and got all but $2,000 in Injury. However, I skunked the People category and got only "Where's the beef?" in 1980s.
I was able to figure out SFSU at $1,600, so it might've been a tad easy. And then Tubman for the DD was a bit easy too.
Missed Boston entirely and blanked on G'n'R to end up 3/5 in Albums.
Low center of gravity + sport + names that sound vaguely Japanese to me = What is Toronto????? I seriously had no idea what to even WAG. Sumo isn't filed as a "sport" in my brain at all.
Lach Trash: peso, Jewel

I dislike when Alex gives away that FJ likely went 3/3 with his patter.

Re: Friday, October 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Perfect retirement game for Alan. He lost to a good player who seemed to have the buzzer dialed in. It was probably observer bias, but he seemed to be mentally fatigued the last two games from the long day. I think he'll make the second round in the TOC when his time comes.
Sports category for FJ - Hell yeah! Some damn phony obscure martial art - damn! But it wasn't one of the obscure ones (like the Brazilian dancey one the other day), and the low COG TOM was adequate. Got my first 5/5 week depending on how the northern city one is judged (I had the former name).
I don't think I've ever seen a 'fro that big and perfect. I pity the spectators that sat behind him for the first four games . Erik played a real solid game until he put it in reverse with that "arm" guess. My guess is he was jabbing at the buzzer and losing the easy ones so he blew his chance to stay CLAM.

I considered judo, but sumo just seemed "right" for the 5/5.

Watch Herschel's face as he reads his DD and suddenly realizes the correct response (and that the clue is painfully easy). I'm no good at making GIFs and the like, but it's a genuinely great reaction...

Re: Friday, October 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I'm a regular at the tournament that Erik was talking about, but have never been the pie-er. They do serve pie during the break. Fortunately, a pie fight has never broken out. Mostly because people want to eat their pie. There are quite a few Jeopardy people at that tournament. There is a definite correlation between Jeopardy and crossword folks.
Erik's puzzles do tend to be deviously difficult. He is not only a master solver, but a master creator as well. I'm really not surprised he did as well as he did; I actually thought he would be even more dominating. I guess we shall see in coming days.

Re: Friday, October 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Agreed. Of the 4 and 5 day champs in the field so far, Alan has the highest per day average and he put up a near $30k Coryat on Monday. Would not be surprised to see him in Mark's "Gold" category come tournament time. Congrats again to Alan on a great run!twelvefootboy wrote: ↑Fri Oct 19, 2018 9:43 pm I think he'll make the second round in the TOC when his time comes.
Another vote for the damn! column - Like you, I can't stand when the category says "sports" but the writers turn it into some wordplay or other cutesy clue. It's not like the writers have ~ten pro sports teams near them or anything. Thankfully this one wasn't overly difficult.Sports category for FJ - Hell yeah! Some damn phony obscure martial art - damn! J! S39 - 1/27-2/1. '24 ToC ???

Coryat: 40,400
48 R/3 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: shoulder pads, Pennsylvania (DD), foot, Peso, Won, Jewel, Guns N' Roses
Once again, the game comes down to DDs. After seemingly rushing DD1 and coming up with an awful guess of Oklahoma (the clue dated the quote to 1803, 104 years before Oklahoma would become a state), Erik converted a big wager on DD3 that put him in the catbird seat heading to FJ!
Speaking of DDs, DD2 was ridiculous. "Name a female ex-slave who famously helped other slaves to freedom"? Come on, guys.

Sorry to see Alan go, and I also wonder how much mental fatigue plays when a guy tapes/plays five games in one day. I should have to endure such stress.
At least he lost to a really sharp, talented player. Congrats to Erik. And I know it's mostly a hair thing, but anyone else look at him and immediately think "white Colin Kaepernick?!"
These guys really cleaned the boards tonight. I got in for exactly one TS, "peso" for $1600.
FJ: yeah, WECIB?

Re: Friday, October 19, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Wondering if Alan was aware that while Alex had him talking about doing the daily crossword in pen that he was standing next to not just a constructor but someone who demolished the field to take the crown as the best and fastest crossword solver in the country earlier this year.
