Did not go for a blind 33% on the Red sorrel (probably would have missed with animal)
No clue on band X
Tombaugh = immediate solve
I checked L yes for "balm" having L said though I negged with "sav" thinking salve with no L sound.
For an earlier draw this month I splurged $4 of my birthday money for a Mega Millions & Powerball ticket.  I did not get a number on either and passed on yesterday's and tonight's draw. This coming Tuesday with $1.6B+ I'll probably throw away another $2 on a QP.

Charon
I had St. Petersburg.
I say the L in salmon and balm.
I have no definite plans to buy lottery tickets, but that could change.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

I knew "babushka" but drew a blank.

Nothing was helpful on Tuesday to me.

I say the L in "balm" and "caulk". Only time I've ever heard anyone say it in "Salmon" is on an episode of The Angry Beavers.

Clammed on X

Tombaugh was the primary clue for Pluto

Pronounce the l in caulk and usually balm

Have bought both Powerball and mega millions tickets this week.

I originally forgot to check the "all 5" box because I earn it so seldom.

I said Tombaugh was more helpful, but I think that's at least partly because it was earlier in the clue.

I didn't check the box for pronouncing the L's, but I pronounce the L in "balm" a little (enough to make it not sound like "bomb"). Others not at all.

Do not plan to purchase a lottery ticket.

Jemima Puddle-Duck on Thursday, judo on Friday.
I'm not sure I say an L per se in "balm" or "caulk," but the L definitely informs my pronunciation of the preceding vowel, hence in my pronunciation those words aren't homophones with "bomb" or "cock" (like "yolk" vs. "yoke"), so I clicked the "I pronounce the L" option.
I have a vague sense that red sorrel is a sort of herb. I'm split between it being that or a grain, but that might be red sorghum confusing me. Either way, easy clue.

St. Petersburg came to me a few seconds too late...Tombaugh was the cincher.
I think red sorrel was the only one I knew in that category....
I take advantage of my 5th Amendment rights for all those words... ;)

X would've been a DD get. not sure about red sorrel.

Tombaugh over underworld, since I got it off 'Tombaugh Regio'

0-5 on 'L'

Had an 0/5 week earlier this season, so it was nice to see these.
Correctly guessed Thursday's for a stupid reason: "pot" and "kettle" follow "tea," so what character starts with T?
The percentage who went 5/5 may turn out to be the highest ever for a regular week.
Hoping for a third lap

3/5 for FJs.

Yes to Babushka. I don't remember what i said to sorrel when I saw it in the archive the first time around. I'll assume I went with animal and got it wrong.

Red Sorrel was my only miss, guessing animal. I actually thought it to be a horse.
It helps to be of a certain age to have actually heard X.
Tombaugh was all I needed for Pluto.
There are people who don't pronounce the l in balm?

Sorrel is, in fact, a word used for a color of horse. "Red sorrel" might be redundant in that context, but one who responded "animal" to it might be able to make a case for it.

Under 50%, and there's a valid argument for more than one correct response. Yeah, I think the writers screwed the pooch on that $200 box.

Similar to palomino. There is not a horse called a palomino, rather horses have palomino coloring.

*162 game season

hell'ya - my first box of glory thanks to a videotape review and reversal of the on-field call for Leningrad!!

Tombaugh. 1930. Kansas. Phony planet. All Pavlovs for Mickey's dog.

As noted, would have written Leningrad b/c I couldn't pull St. Petersburg.

Didn't know Tinkerbell name meant squat, just lucky enough to only know one flying figment in kiddie lit and it was the right one.

The Judo guys have a case, but I guess the moves pin it to Sumo. Most of us played the 50/50 on the safe side. This was a time to be the sheep.

I know the Red sorrel plant, didn't know the critter one (Oryx?). Glad to see spinel and chert as I work with one of them and live on top of the other.

I pronounce the fish as "saw-men" just to get the ell-ish vowel glide. I pronounced "balm" as "Savv". Chalk rhymes with Rock in the state next door (and JayHawk).

Next week: My first box of shame  (there have been many singletons)

All instagets this week outside of Tuesday's High/Low trap of Charon.

Clammed on red sorrel but would've guessed animal (sounds like a fish).

Whenever I hear the word babushka, I think of when Lynne Cox swam the Bering Strait from Alaska to Russia in 1987. Along with coffee, chocolate, and a hot bath, she requested the Russian's provide her with a babushka when she arrived. She thought wearing a Russian headscarf would make for a great visual. In the medical tent the Russian's provided, she found everything she requested except for the headscarf. An older, female member of the medical team came up to Cox and started showing her photographs. Cox asked if these were photos of the doctor's children. "Nyet," she responded. "Not children. I babushka... Grandchildren."

X were one of the great bands of the early LA punk scene but they pale in comparison to the contemporaneous Aussie punk band of the same name:

Pronounce the L in balm.

Won't be buying a ticket.
I would prefer not to.
