Hello, NTSB? Report to Culver City as there was a derailment in the DJ! round. The cause? Just some (-$1600 overall with 4 TS) VARIOUS COWBOYS. Any injuries? Yes, a couple of CLASSICAL RAPPERS.

This is a show for story skippers to slow down for the chats. Joanna appeared on Fleming J! in 1973 for Kindergarten week and won $300, encyclopedias and the home game. Alex hijacked Erik with a crossword puzzle story and a pie on hand.
Spoiler

No follow-through although the audience of course was voting, yes.

The FJ! category had me thinking my streak of 11 right would end. The clue completed that thought as I took the hammer with no response. “Shut up Camp David!” was distracting me and I was unable to connect the dots in the clue to the obvious response when 30 seconds should have been enough time.

Even after Alex gave his post-music remarks about 1985 and the man who now uses it I was still stumped. A clean miss and an easy one to get over as I will chalk (or chock) it up to East Coast disadvantage.

Joanna had a very good opportunity to steal the game with the singing cowboy and composer being spotted the first name enough if she hits those two clues Erik did not know.

This is a link for the crossword puzzle Alex mentioned: http://latimescrosswordanswers.com/1111 ... 018-print/

I was able to print the blank puzzle on one page through Firefox and I don't know how other browsers will do. Even though I have no experience with LA Times crosswords I'll try an Alan Dunn in ink attempt.

If I need the answers later I have no doubt that will be easy to turn up with a basic search on Google.

That interview with Erik is an all-timer.

Oh, how frustrating -- I knew exactly what they were going for in FJ, but I just couldn't pull it...

The puzzle was a good one and I would not rate is as difficult as Alex made it sound. I completed it in ink with no mistakes while never being stumped for long or frustrated. For the things I did not know the crosses were reasonable to help with the solve.

The toughest thing for me was 16A: Accent sound? (4)

Even after I filled in:
Spoiler
HONK - I did not get the connection until after the puzzle was completed that it hit me it could be a reference to a car. Which company? I had to use Google that it is a Hyundai.

These three Archive hits have not been enough to help me yet:
#7491, aired 2017-03-20 AUTO-MATIC WORDS $400: Hyundai drivers know it's a unique pattern of one's speech
#6644, aired 2013-07-04 HAPPY BIRTHDAY! $1000: You're 16 & thrilled with your new Accent, from this car company that uses the voice of Jeff Bridges
#4224, aired 2003-01-02 "L.P."s $800: For the Hyundai Accent, it's just under $10,000

Been a while since I've tried a crossword. Let's see how I do...

For some reason, WNEM aired a J! ad in the first commercial break, where they usually run an ad for Wheel.

Ran Down ___, all but Oxygen in Pieces of 8, all but "elf" in Thre"e".

Didn't recognize anything in Something to Read, though.

Champ's interview was one of the best things I've seen in J! in a while.

No idea why they unraveled so badly on the last few clues.

No guess on FJ! If I've heard of the correct response before, then it didn't Hawley-Smoot into my brain.

Lach Trash: Checker cab, water moccasin, John Travolta, Gene Autry, spider, Mussorgsky

Good for Joanna for making it a TDD in the first round on a 2nd row clue. Erik went hunting for them and was rewarded in DJ. However in the endgame he failed to realize his precarious lead and kept going for the high dollar clues. Joanna was only one clue from preventing a runaway late, had she just waited for a clue she was more sure about instead of not staying clam, the result could have been different.

Really hoping Erik and that 'fro stick around awhile. Awesome interview, and nice work putting up a $20k Coryat despite faltering late.

Have a feeling a few boardies may claim a win from the 4th tonight. I scooped up around $8k in DJ! alone, surely others did better. Couldn't get the gears rolling in Final.

Anybody else clam on the $2000 SCOTUS question because you knew it was "Citizens United" but figured they wanted the full case name, and weren't sure who the other party was? I would bet that at least one of the contestants knew it and didn't ring in because of that. Apart from Roe v. Wade, there isn't a case that you hear more about now than Citizens United.

It was Citizens United v.
Spoiler
FEC
, if you were wondering.

Instaget. I've had dinner at Mar-a-Lago. In my defense, it was many years ago as part of a conference I was attending.

Marjorie Merriweather Post's Hillwood home is just a few miles from here. It's a neat place to visit, and has a collection of Faberge eggs, which are worth the visit alone.

Like the players, I drew a blank on that one, as vastly important as it is... But I figure if they accept just Brown v Board...
Someone should have been hit with a pie before the end of this episode....not necessarily Erik. Definitely a win from the 4th on this one...
Took a few seconds for FJ to come together, but ruminating on "hint of the future" brought it out....

I actually said Citizens United v FEC at home, just to show off be safe, but I knew they'd accept it without the other party. A Citizens United BMS would be as surprising as BMSing Dred Scott or Obergefell (I wonder if they'd BMS Miranda).

Surprised he couldn't come up with Marbury V Madison. Also surprised at multiple whiffs at a picture of a checker cab, and no one picking up Gene Autry off the rebound.

Instaget FJ.

I was trying to think of other rulings that just go by one name, and I came up with Dred Scott and Miranda. Though Obergefell was certainly a big case, it would be a tough one to ask about. It's recent enough to not be in the history books, and though it was very big at the time, public opinion has swung so far in favor of same sex marriage that you don't really hear about it anymore. Republicans will campaign against Roe and Democrats will campaign against Citizen's United, but once Obergefell (v. Hodges) was announced, it faded from the national discussion really fast.

I was surprised by the miss of Marbury v. Madison, too. I think you are going to name well-known, important court cases, I think Marbury v. Madison, Brown v. Board, and Roe v. Wade would be the top three (followed by maybe Plessy v. Ferguson and Dred Scott).
