it is relatively new...sabermetric geeks love that stat...is pretty much how trout gets in the final 3 for mvp every year...even made it this year over jd martinez, which is laughable

Laughable? By what measure did JD have a better season than Trout? OK, he had a few more home runs and a higher BA, but that's about it. Trout had a huge advantage in OBP and plays a key defensive position well. Martinez is a very good player. Trout is, quite simply, one of the greatest players in the history of the game.

If anything, Martinez should have been in over Ramirez.

Agreed. I'd be shocked if Mookie isn't the AL MVP, so probably a moot point ultimately.

Grumble....thought WAR was wins against replacement.
No chance in Hell, Heaven or any other dimension of coming up with FJ.

Same here with "against". I am reasonably sure that I've heard it that way.

I would get this FJ in Hell, because I'm sure the production is playing on a loop. It sounds like a real downer :).

You may have, but it's certainly wrong. The stat is supposed to measure how many wins more (or less for a negative WAR) a player contributed versus what a replacement-level player would have, hence "wins above replacement."

We are seriously arguing that Mike Trout is not even a top 3 player in his own league?

I'm not really a big sabermetrics guy. I have nothing against it; it's just not a personal interest of mine. I just like to relax and watch the Royals. But it's clear to me that Mike Trout is head and shoulders above every other position player in baseball right now.

Emma had me wondering why they let a three-year-old onto Teen Week.

NHO "base on balls" as an alternate name for a walk. I thought that was obscure for $200 even in regular play, especially with TKO further down the board.

I swear my knowledge of Greek mythology backslides every time it comes up as a category.

(13 + 14) x 15 = not even a WAG on my part either. I can't for the life of me see an easier way to do 27 x 15.

I still can't remember for the life of me that Yosemite = CA. I always conflate it with Yellowstone.

Predicted that FJ! would be a NHOI for me. That title is utterly unfamiliar to me.

(Full disclosure: I spun my wheels on this one, and think it was pretty tough to expect someone to do on their feet.)

27 = 30 - 3
30 x 15 = 450
3 x 15 = 45
450 - 45 = 405

I know a four-step solution probably isn't your definition of "an easier way," but turning the multiplication of two two-digit numbers into a couple of "15 x 3"s is a big improvement.

45 right.

Young Adult Reading (2), Sports Abbrev. (5), On the Calendar (4), We Walked to School (5), It was 10 Miles (4), In the "Snow" (3)

Please Welcome Myth Greece (5), Teen Math (2), A Word of Advice (2), Quoting the Movies (3), Oops on Stamps (5), Coming of Age (5)

Lach Trash: base on balls, technical knockout, wins above replacement

I remembered a clue about Dear Evan Hansen in a game from last year's TOC (http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=5827) that mentioned "a high school senior", so that lead me to guess it here. It took me several seconds to gather it, but the TOC reruns over the summer made it easier to recall.

My way was to take 27 x 10 and add half again as much -- 270 + 135 = 405. I was not able to do this in the time allotted and am sure the lights would not have made the process easier.

20 * 15 = 300
07 * 15 = 105
300 + 105 = 405

That took every nanosecond to work out, and would've been a miss if it hadn't been a TS.

For fun, I tried a "spot" guess and pulled 415, knowing I would need to sort out the carrying by using the penguin's algorithm. I could easily do the proofing and correction in real time, since I flip metric and imperial all day with the spot method as a smell test. Under the lights, I'm sure I'd be a blithering idiot with ten minutes and pencil and paper.

I did 27 = 3³, 15 = 3 × 5, 3^4 = 81, 81 × 5 = (80 ×5) + (1 × 5) = 400 + 5 = 405.

Knowing powers of three sometimes comes in handy.

It's even handier to just know your logarithm tables to 12 places, add the two logs and take the anti-log:

1.43136376416 + 1.17609125905 = 2.60745502321 => 405.000

:P

Seriously, if you destroyed the problem into primes and exponents and built it back up, more power to you!

That's how I got it. A devilishly difficult clue, especially for the middle clue in a Teen Tournament game. Add in the lights and having to do it on the fly and it was no surprise it was a TS. I would have made that the DD, at least you have time to puzzle it out.
