When it’s just not your day:
Spoiler

Image
Credit to Dan for being able to cut it to minus 400 before having another neg.
Claire looked a little stunned that Audrey overtook her in the FJ! round. 16999 or 13401 seems reasonable to me for Claire’s possible outcomes. Audrey went for a bigger pretty number and it worked in her favor.

Fine by Emma from Monday as she remains in the WC1 spot when she could have dropped to WC2.

The FJ! clue was a no doubter for solving and spelling with the pen down before the music began.

Where the wildcards stand after 3 QF games:
Spoiler
Emma: 18400
Claire: 16999
Anish: 3600
Rotimi: 1

Is that -$7200 the lowest anyone's ever gone on Jeopardy?

I goofed on that FJ. With more thought I might have come up with a better answer. Oh well.

I don't remember the exact wording of the clue, but could "aerospace engineer" have been acceptable for rocket scientist?

I knew Urals, but I precalled the "Caucasus" neg.

I distinctly remember one of my high school Spanish teachers telling us that Cinco de Mayo was more of a southwest U.S. than a Spanish holiday.

don't know, but I'm pretty sure that would've been the lowest while ending with a positive score if Dan had gotten 'gizzard'.

That was tough to watch. Poor kid. Easy FJ again. I don’t think “pepper shaker” should’ve been accepted since it doesn’t grind.

I assume you're referring to Audrey's response, but she said "pepper grinder."

I haven't seen this yet, pre-empted by breaking news.

Fire (reporting) fatigue is setting in. I saw a news crew reporting from a backyard that the only thing lost there was a barbecue pit. I couldn't help but think "How ironic."

I liked an old FJ that asked what calendar date saw the greatest sales of avocados each year.

Btw, I just noticed that Cinco de Mayo is antipodal to Guy Fawkes day. Good scheduling.

I couldn't help but think to myself, if you were deep enough in the hole so that there was almost no chance of coming back, do you just decide to go for the record instead? And then Dan answered my question by damn near making it out of the hole.

Not sure if you're kidding or not, but Alex wasn't being facetious. Dan was ringing in before he knew whether he knew the answer or not and use the extra time to figure it out. It's usually a good strategy, but didn't work well for him. It was exciting watching his comeback; too bad it fell short.

The pump don't work, 'cause the Vandals took the handle...

Rooting for Audrey, fellow Hoosier, all the way. Even if Carmel is basically Eagleton.

Also if I knew about the prom duct tape scholarship back in high school, I think I could have won it.

And they definitely should have accepted "aerospace engineer" for "rocket scientist."

He did have an answer for each of the time he rang in. My theory is that he got down on himself early on that missed DD and then kept thinking that he'd get back into the game so he jumped on clues where he wasn't really sure of the answer but was hoping that his guesses would be correct. It was just one of those days for him.

I'm this kind of scientist, a byword for braniac, so I study thrust & stability when going into space
Don't agree with accepting 'aerospace engineer.' The non-restrictive clause isn't just a TOM, it helps key in the desired profession.
Sadly, "it's not aerospace engineering" isn't quite as common as "it's not rocket science"
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.
