Mary Ann went for the heat-shaped hand gesture and of course Alex copied it when he came out.

Oprah is not the only acceptable first-name only female talk show host.

Ha, J mailed in 1000 postcards 30 years ago to get an audition for the Teen Tournament. I was 3/3 with one postcard each time getting an audition back in those dark ages. To me the trick was get it done and in the mail the following morning after the address was shown during the previous night’s game. First come, first serve.

J and I doubly matched in the FJ! round with both response and all-in wager. That’s what I want to see with both category and clue when I have a weekly perfecto going.

Here is the Dan Patrick version of the clue: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=3752

Mary Ann seems a bit tired early this game...oh no

OK, where's Jennifer from? (rewinds) Tucker, Georgia...oh, it's in DeKalb County, that explains why she keeps coming back to Atlanta.

OK, Mary Ann's back on in DJ

Nice job getting all DDs, J

Ugh, I cringe every time I hear "Bernie Sanders." Such a disgusting self-promoting charlatan (and, functionally, the opposite of the progressive he claims to be), and I blame him for a lot right now...

OK, the correct FJ response is Montreal and Munich, there's also Mexico City, can't come up with the fourth one

GAH IT'S MOSCOW! As a Russia specialist (albeit pre-revolutionary history), this is embarrassing

OH NO! :(

Coryat: $40,400

J: 24/29, got the DD. 5/5 on governors, 4/4 on Battles; 4/5 on Atlanta (I knew of Emory University but didn't know the basis for its name nor did I make the association with Atlanta--also wouldn't it be awesome if that were the university Jennifer works at? Ah, a quick Google search reveals that it's not), Daytime Emmys (blanked on "General Hospital," misfired on the clue and was thinking of hotels) and One "I" (couldn't come up with "plight"--I had heard it before, but wasn't anywhere near coming up with it on the spot)

DJ: 25/30, both DDs. Ran Boat, Top of the World, and Short Form. 4/5 in B.S. I Love You (whiffed on Bram Stoker)

LT: 1775, Charleston, Byrd, hangar bay, seal (lucky guess), Sami

That's too bad about Mary Ann, although it highlights just how difficult it is to get to 5 wins. You're bound to run into a kryptonite category and in her case, it showed up as the FJ category.

Still, that was a lot to process in 30 seconds. At first, I thought they were looking for cities that had hosted consecutive summer games and then almost got stuck on Melbourne.

Mary Ann wishes to thank everyone here who jinxed her by talking about how they expected her to do in the TOC. She was a great player, but J and Jennifer both brought enough heat to force her to get this FJ and she didn't. Congrats to both of them, and double congrats to J for hanging in there, getting on the show, knowing the correct response and actually winning. Sad to see Mary Ann go, but happy for J.

I still love you, Mary Ann, even though you guessed penguins for the ON TOP OF THE WORLD category. Couldn't be farther off without leaving the planet.

My only saving grace was the pair of particularly infamous/famous events:
  • 1972 hostages in Munich
  • 1976 first perfect 10 in Montreal
(which is undoubtedly part of why the writers liked this question too - lots of ways in beyond just rote knowledge of all Olympic dates and places)

One of those beer cities.

edit: Oh, she didn't get Montreal either. I guess it wasn't her category. I admit I'd never noticed the M streak before.

Looks like we're being preempted by football, so I'l play FJ here.

Montreal was easy, but Munich wasn't coming.

I had Munich in '72 immediately, and it took a second or too to get Montreal in '76. I also remembered Melbourne in '56, so there was some momentary trepidation, but was able to complete the quartet with Mexico City '68 and Moscow '80 to lock in my answer.

Peary and Byrd were the two firsts to the pole different ways, but Byrd is the one that flew.

Anthony Geary is the Luke of "Luke and Laura". (Laura is Genie Francis, who is Jonathan "Riker from TNG" Frakes' wife.)

Work was crazy today. I was just too brain-fried to even try to play along today.

I had no idea that "perk" (either version) and "cab" were short for anything.

Ice + flipper was huge negbait for penguin.

I don't think I'd have gotten this even on a better day. Both at least ring bells as former Olympic cities though.

I had Munich (and Moscow and Mexico City), but I would have never got Montreal.

This was a great game!

No J! In NY due to football.

I was living in Montreal in 1976, so that was easy. My recollection of Munich was jogged by watching part of The Little Drummer Girl on cable this week, in which the Munich massacre was referenced. Moscow was the one that didn’t immediately come to me, probably because of the US boycott.

I wouldn't single this FJ out as "tough." This is decidedly not my category, but I had little problem coming up with 2 Ms that weren't capitals. I didn't even have to worry about the consecutive part, though I'm sure it helped that Munich and Montreal are the first 2 Olympics I remember...A little reflection and I thought of the other 2 Ms as well.

Same here in Philly, although the two affiliates handled the situation differently. WABC intended to join Jeopardy! in progress; WPVI, realizing ahead of time that it was unrealistic that the game would end by 7 pm (even in regulation), moved it to after Nightline at 1:05 am, with local news intending to fill any gap between the end of football and 7:30. As it happened, with Virginia-Virginia Tech going to overtime and the coverage running to 7:35, they ran a newscast until 8; I'm guessing they'll slot Wheel in at 1:35.

My mind went first to Melbourne in Final, but I knew that wasn't it; kept moving forward, hit Mexico City, and found the quartet the clue referenced, and had no trouble pulling out the two correct cities.

Had both cities instantly in Final. I'll never forgot a great anecdote my high school math teacher told my class once about his trip to the Montreal games -- he goes to watch one of the events but he can't see because a giant guy sat down in front of him. As it turned out, the guy was Wilt Chamberlain.

Sad to see Mary Ann go. Given that the show has already announced a Teachers Tourney for May, it seems the next ToC might be bumped until next November. A 4x champ in 11th place on the ToC tracker seems unlikely to hold up for a whole year. I honestly thought Mary Ann could have been a gold tier player and a contender to win.

If we start from the position that on a Venn diagram, "nation" would intersect with but would not be entirely contained within "sovereign state" (an understanding that is indeed quite essential for making sense of modern European history), I know several people who would dispute the claim that Montreal is not a national capital.

Thank you Reddit guy for enabling me to see this episode. Sad to see Mary Ann go but a guy who sends 1000 postcards trying to get on the show is also deserving.
