Re: Monday, December 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I'M NOT RETIRING! had goals of Alex to read clues about things in 2020, 2021 and 2022. We'll see how it works out. The J!6 went as far as to say Alex will be on the job in 2020.
Friday had Hippo with no S for a neg. Today, Francesco gave the famous chef an S and Staci rebounded her name in singular.
The FJ! clue was a double hit as I instantly knew the city and how to spell it. It went 2/3 and that now makes six games in a row with that success pattern for the contestants.
Swetha would not have had the lead even if she solved DD3. Her get on clue 29 would have been enough to get ahead of Francesco if she had known the repeating name animal.
Staci did not know the FJ! clue to take a clean loss while if she had got DD1 and led 14800 to 14600 that would have been a tough defeat.

Anyone want to set a line on "number of online complaints received about the Bill Clinton response"?

That's because the correct plural of hippoptamus is "hippopotamus". No need for a change.

Re: Monday, December 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I did one Sporcle quiz for a refresher on the 2-word capitals if it comes up again. These are the ones it had:
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Guatemala City, Guatemala
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Kuwait City, Kuwait
La Paz, Bolivia
Mexico City, Mexico
New Delhi, India
Panama City, Panama
Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Port Louis, Mauritius
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea
Port Vila, Vanuatu
Porto-Novo, Benin
San Jose, Costa Rica
San Marino, San Marino
San Salvador, El Salvador
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic
Sao Tome, Sao Tome and Principe
St. George’s, Grenada
St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda
Vatican City, Vatican City
Any corrections, deletions or additions?
Looking over the list I noticed that most would be fair game in the FJ! round. The writers could go to the well multiple times with continent distinctions, name similarities, alphabetically first/last, capital name same as country with "City" added, etc.

Re: Monday, December 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Don't recognize those first two Oscar movies, but I got the next two.
All but Thomas Aquinas, Nietzsche, and cancer in their categories.
How many more times are people going to add an S to "Julia Child"? Probably as many as think that there's an S at the end of "Revelation".
Beat = Ginsburg is another one of those mental connections that just won't stick for me. That should be a Hawley-Smoot name...
I knew Rolling Stones, Kenny G., and Henry Mancini, but blanked on all three. No way was I getting Lou Reed though.
No guess on FJ!
Lach Trash: Morphine, Divine Comedy, Will Hays, Charlie Parker. Also got the aye-aye DD.

Instaget FJ. Italian East Africa -> Ethiopia -> Addis Ababa, done.
This whole 'running out of time with one clue left on the board' thing is getting on my nerves.

Sounded like he stuttered/stumbled and said something like 'Clinonton'. Ever so slightly surprised Alex didn't ask him to repeat the answer, but eh whatever, he obviously knew it.OntarioQuizzer wrote: ↑Mon Dec 10, 2018 2:19 pm Anyone want to set a line on "number of online complaints received about the Bill Clinton response"?

I struggled with these boards today but picked up some nice trash
The FJ category reveal had me in a panic, as I could only precall a handful of 2-word capitals, but then I heaved a sigh of instaget relief when the clue was read
Whenever synagogue is called for, I respond with temple. Would that be acceptable?
What about Inferno for Divine Comedy? Or just Coolidge? Sundry for sundries?
I didn't do great with the Oscars category, but Shakespeare in Love? I should prob memorize the winners by date

My favorite recollection of a Lou Reed concert: the guy in our section yelling "Play Sweet Jane or I'll f***ing kill you!"

Italian East Africa = Somalia, went around the area to find Addis Ababa.

Probably, but they might ask you to be more specific...
Yes, the quote is from the Inferno....Grace was in the category, so yes...the clue asked for a "plural noun," so no.
Addis Ababa was the last thing that went through my mind before the clue reveal, so I was in good shape when I saw it...

And the FJ precall pays off.
Mancini was a cute bit of synchronicity; I watched Hatari! over the weekend.

The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.
Latest movies (1-10): An Autumn Afternoon (7), Europa Europa (7), Tampopo (9), Baby Doll (6)

Re: Monday, December 10, 2018 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Coolidge is probably fine, Grace was in the category, but not in quotes. Inferno may be okay for Divine Comedy, often either is acceptable, unless the quote in question is from one of the non-Inferno sections. I think in general it's better to say Divine Comedy and should they prompt you, go with Inferno. The clue for sundres indicated it wanted a plural round so they might neg that, although also possible you get a long pause from Alex and could get a second shot.morbeedo wrote: ↑Mon Dec 10, 2018 9:11 pm I struggled with these boards today but picked up some nice trash

On the English Patient, I'm guessing she either knows nothing about the film or glossed over the clue, mixed up Joseph Fiennes with Ralph Fiennes and named a film that is only 2 years off, a fairly reasonable misfire.

And it was the very first city that went through mine. Sort of surprised Staci completely blanked.
Francesco reminds me of Jose Canseco.

I just had no idea what to even guess. There are like, four trillion countries in Africa and I see no way to noodle your way through this in 30 seconds unless you're inhumanly fast.

They did say Italian East Africa, which narrows it down to East African countries that had an Italian presence into WWII, which is pretty close to 1.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Tue Dec 11, 2018 12:00 am I just had no idea what to even guess.
