CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Kathryn Kienholz is a retired CPA who met her husband in an interesting way. You answered an ad?

Kathryn: I did, at the university housing service when I was a student. I needed a place to live. He lived in a house with a bunch of other people that had moved out. I moved in, and less than a year later, we were married, and we continued to live there for another four years, 'cause it was cheap and we didn't have any money.

Alex: Oh, okay. Good.

[ laughter ]

Alex: Heath Herel, we introduced you as a ScrumMaster.

Heath: Yes, sir.

Alex: What are we talking about here? What sport?

Heath: Well, none. No sport. Actually, we work with software engineers. Soft--So Scrum is just a--It's a framework for doing complicated work.

Alex: Ohh.

Heath: So I coach and teach and help them do really amazing things.

Alex: Okay.

Heath: Yeah.

Alex: Good for you.

Alex: Jon Barber is our champion--young champion who had the hiccups once, and those are unpleasant if they last, and yours lasted how long?

Jon: I had the hiccups for an entire week. And I went to the doctor, and no one could do anything. I was getting desperate, and my grandmother told me to drink olive oil, so I drank a bunch of olive oil, and that solved the problem.

Alex: How much olive oil are we talking about?

Jon: Pretty good amount, like half a bottle.

Alex: Ooh, gosh.

[ laughter ]

Heath won’t soon forget the Morrison title at DD3 since it cost him the match. Kathryn eked out the lead for the FJ! round to earn the nice pay day.

Not Jon’s game at all as even with a 3800 all-in he still badly trailed.

A FJ! clue wanting two parts in COASTLINES could easily cause me trouble. In today’s case I could handle it for the second day in a row of getting something with place names.

Hope no one pictured the Risk Board of only four countries and forgot all about the long country.

Jon Barber may have known he was in trouble early when ALLITERATIVE PEOPLE popped up and he was playing Heath Herel and Kathryn Kienholz.

Note: Reddit guy already has the game posted.

All but $1,000 in Alliterative People and Glass.

Negged with "Wonderwall" for "Champagne Supernova" for 4/5 there. Frustrating miss since I know both songs, but the "-all" rhymes in the lyric tricked me into thinking that it had to be "Wonderwall".

Ran the Bowl Games category, though.

LGA = LaGuardia eluded me in the top box (brain got distracted by Los Angeles, which I know is LAX, but just couldn't shake it), and I got the next 3 before BWI threw me again.

1990s movie about Chris Farley being an embarrassing family member = Tommy Boy right? Oops. Negbait!

NHO "newsjacking", Chinatown, or the guy in Lawyers for $400.

I was completely stumped by the entire DJ! board. Felt very YEKIOYD.

No guess on FJ! Even with Chile I had no idea what the other one could be.

Ugh, they're using the boring IATA codes and not the much more interesting ICAO codes.

Correctly figured out what a Scrum Master is. Only because I've been watching "Silicon Valley."

PRE-CALLED CRUEL TO BE KIND!

lol bitcoin. Bitcoin is what happens when economic illiterates don't understand why securities regulation exists, or that technology is fundamentally a social phenomenon.

I WENT HOME WITH A WAITRESS, THE WAY I ALWAYS DO!

Also pre-called Bob Dylan.

I always thought it was a pity that they didn't get Phil Morris to play Johnnie Cochran...

Who is that person who always shouts out "whoa!" on FJ wagers that don't need one? Some of Roger Craig's wagers needed a "whoa." A wager that's $399 more than what you need to cover a double-up by second place doesn't, particularly when it doesn't give you an unusually high final score.

Coryat: $38,200

J: 25R5P. Got the DD. 5/5 on Airport Codes, Alliterative People, and Bowl Game Sponsors. 4/5 on "Glass" (and disappointed that Philip Glass didn't get in on the action--did they tape this after the Kennedy Center Honors recipients were announced, incidentally? If so, he should sue for the mention to which he is entitled--I hear that the Court of Common Pleas is now in session). 3/5 on Lyrics and Stuck.

DJ: 21R2W6P. 1/2 on DDs (never heard of the Toni Morrison novel) 5/5 on Warren Zevon. 4/5 on Newer Words and Almost President. 3/5 on Heavenly Body (Venus instead of Mercury) and Nobelists. 2/4 on International Entertainment?

FJ: Instaget. Never heard of it, but straightforward enough.

40 right.

Lach Trash: "Tainted Love", Pearl S. Buck, Syriana, Pluto

I guessed Chile quickly, but picked Colombia as the second country.

I wonder if, for the BWI clue, they would have accepted "What is the airport I hate having to drive to?"

I kept trying to come up with Barre-Wilkes...then realized I had it backwards. I've even used BWI (then took light rail to Baltimore).
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.
Latest movies (1-10): Everything Everywhere All at Once (10), Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken (6), Black Sunday /1960/ (6), Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (7)

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Airport does have the cooler code, though: AVP

Chile was pretty much a gimme. I could not for the life of me picture what country was immediately north, or which had the longer coastline, so I 50-50'd Ecuador and Peru and guessed wrong this time. Boo, hiss.

On the other hand I ran all 3 categories before the first break, and can't recall doing that recently.

Yeah, the carousel is operating even more smoothly than the Trump White House. Wonder if we can call it a "perfect week" and see another new winner in Friday's game.

Congrats to Kathryn for a fine, solid win.

Same here. There aren't that many countries in SA and I should have the geography down pat, but for some reason I can never keep the locations and relative sizes of Peru and Ecuador straight.

The “Bowl Sponsors” category was bookended by Blockbuster Video, and the service that in no small part drove Blockbuster out of business.

I knew that Peru was bigger than Ecuador but until I looked at a map (after missing FJ with Columbia) I hadn't known how long the coastline of Peru is. Sometimes a missed FJ is a spur to learn a little something.
