Charles Van Doren, who in 1956 won $128,000 on the rigged game show Twenty One, has died at the age of 93. Van Doren was a central character in the 1994 movie Quiz Show, Robert Redford's film about the game show scandals.

The Event Horizon Telescope - actually a virtual telescope consisting of 8 radio telescopes across the globe - released the first image where they imaged a black hole. They saw the "shadow" of a supermassive black hole, with a mass of billions of suns, at the centre of galaxy M87. The angular resolution of the telescope was 20 micro arcseconds - "enough to read a newspaper in New York from a sidewalk café in Paris"

[if of course the newspaper was visible in radio waves and it was positioned somewhere that all the constituent telescopes could see it]

Stratolaunch, the largest plane measured by wingspan (and passing the Spruce Goose), had a successful maiden voyage. It was originally announced by Paul Allen (cofounder of Microsoft, now deceased) and Burt Rutan (SpaceShipOne)

The plan is to use it as a 35,000 foot launch pad for rockets.

Tiger Woods wins the 2019 Masters. It's his 5th green jacket, 15th major title, and first major win since the 2008 US Open.

I honestly didn't think he'd win another major.

so it's basically two planes fused together at the wing. Whoopee.

Neither did I, but at 16 to 1 he was worth a flyer and I would have rooted for him anyway.

Tiger Woods is now both the youngest-ever to win the Masters (21 yo, 1997), and the second-oldest (43 yo, 2019). Jack Nicklaus (46 yo, 1986) is still the oldest.

A cassowary — a large, flightless bird native to Australia and New Guinea — killed its Florida owner when it attacked him after he fell.

April 15, 2019, Notre-Dame de Paris is ablaze and it doesn't look good. If it's not going to be a total loss of the cathedral, it's going to be very close to it.

The steeple of the cathedral has collapsed. It's not good.

OMG. The term tragedy is overused, but this is truly an enormous cultural tragedy. At least no life was lost (it seems).

It looks as though the fire may have had something to do with renovations at the cathedral.

Imagine being the construction company that burned down Notre Dame.

was in paris one time...didn't see that cathedral...didn't see the eiffel tower either for that matter...i am the least touristy traveler of all time

wonder what the cause of it was....perhaps it was varg vikernes....chronic church burner and convicted murderer...currently living in france...he was the subject of the 2019 movie "lords of chaos"...based on the book of the same name and one of the few books that i have read in entirety

Looks like 2/3rds of the roof and the spire (which was itself a restoration put in place back in the 1800s) are gone, but most of the vault made it through okay. The towers are at least mostly fine and while the north rose window is confirmed okay, another is likely destroyed. (If it's the south rose window, that'd make it the second time fire took it out as it's also a restoration having gone through a previous fire).
