What was the TOM anyway? Or do you just have to know that's when Christopher Robin died?

It's more to work backwards as those titles sound kind of fanciful. From there think of famous British authors that wrote about make-believe places. Most people seemed to immediately get a sense of either Milne or Tolkien as they had famous enough sons. Christopher Robin is a recent movie and Christopher Tolkien has worked on things his dad wrote. The advantage on the coin flip went to those who knew Christopher Tolkien was still living.
Or that JRR would have been 104 if he made it to 1996...

I also didn't interpret "famous son" literally (and have been wondering why people seemed -certain- that human spawn were involved...) That was probably my bigger mistake.

I, too, got Tolkien to the cleaners on that one.
I too will be checking the box in the weekly poll stating that I got Tolkien to the cleaners on that one.

I just don't think this kind of "read between the lines" nonsense makes for a fair, gettable clue.

Yes, you've stated this ad nauseam; you object to any clue that requires deductive reasoning. Or a clue that requires that you know things, etc.

Isn't it time to stop this merry-go-round?

I didn't think Christopher Tolkien, whose first name I was not certain of anyway, would qualify as a 'famous son' so I swung to Milne in little time, even though the names of the memoirs seemed to match Tolkien better.

It turns out the songwriter was an Ohio transplant that moved to Kansas. So, antelopes once lived there, died out, and have recovered so that 70 of them were taken by hunters last year. Oh, and they are the fastest animal in the western hemisphere (citation: hutchnews.com). They don't like to jump and climb under fences.
From wiki:
The pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is a species of artiodactyl mammal indigenous to interior western and central North America. Though not an antelope, it is often known colloquially in North America as ... As a member of the superfamily Giraffoidea, the pronghorn's closest living relatives are the giraffes and okapi.
That damn stone of scone again. Another tough break although I would expect any contestant to have at least seen and studied the last two years of shows and the earlier FJ on this should have aired before this taping.

No shot at FJ for me. I'd have wagged Tolkein if I thought of it, went with Lewis just to have an answer. Dunno the name of the Winnie the Pooh creator, and didn't know Chris Robin was the real boy's name.
i said pretty much the same thing...that dumb rock that was the answer to a final jeopardy clue the other month...didn't retain what it was and will continue to block out that dumb pos rock

Same here. I had low/no confidence, but couldn't think of anything else to say. I felt as though I remembered Christopher T. being around for the release of the movies (and I was right). So it was one of those days where I made a response that I had reason to know was wrong just so I wouldn't leave the thing blank. The only other possibility I could think of was Douglas Gresham, the stepson of C. S. Lewis. But a) he's less famous than Christopher who is already borderline in the fame department, and b) I had reason to believe the he, too, survived beyond 1996. (Turns out he and Christopher T are both still alive.) If I'd thought of Christopher Robin, I might have upgraded to him with fairly low confidence. But I also had a vague--and it turns out incorrect--notion that he too had survived into the 21st century.

Looks like our wrong guess will score high in the pole. Will it score higher than the correct response? From the chatter here, I'm tempted to say yes. But it's probably just that the people who got it right are mostly keeping mum. No one likes a bragger.

Agreed, I said Tolkien but regretted it at about :26... CT is notable but not really famous, not like the son who is actually a character in his father's books...

In case anybody is feeling like the dumbest one in the room - I thought Christopher Robin was the name of a bird character that hung out with the Owl. So there's a little boy in the story? I can think of the cartoon bear, owl, and donkey, but no human character. Oh well, at least I am less endumbened than I was before.

There have been mentions of Carroll and Lewis. It would be no crime to add in others. It was a clue that did not require knowing the titles or death year. It could be solved by thinking fantasy place writers. It's Jeopardy! and the FJ! round, so the writers have a small well. It's going to be one those names that comes up over and over again. The only twist was it was a son.

It's not a good clue for you as you do not like "smell what the J! writers are cooking" clues.
Sorry, Mark, that I can't respond to your post. I'm still chuckling over the notion that Diana could be someone's son.

The characters of Winnie the Pooh are Christopher Robin's stuffed animals - though I don't remember if that's obvious in reading the books. The original Winnie is on display at the New York Public Library.

You must have missed the Winnie the Pooh Disney movie as a kid. According to Wikipedia, it was a "featurette" - just 26 minutes - but had some songs written by the Sherman Brothers - who also did Mary Poppins. Christopher Robin figures prominently in all of the animated Disney movies/featurettes with Winnie the Pooh.

I believe that there were a few short movies, created over the period of about a decade, that were eventually edited together into a full-length movie (which was called The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh to indicate its episodic nature - of course the original book was pretty episodic to begin with).

I agree with those who have said that Christopher Tolkien is famous in Tolkien-fan circles (where he would be generally known to be still alive) but not with the general public. I don't know if the general public necessarily knows anymore that Christopher Robin Milne was a real person and that he had an ambivalent-at-best relationship with his father's work, but I think that was fairly well-known at one time.
