Didn't want this to be true when I first read the article, but I guess it is.

Re: RIP Teacher's Tournament Winner Larry Martin
What an awful way to start a Saturday seeing the such sad news.
I posted this earlier this week in looking at how the TOC field was shaping up: To get in [name/gender redacted] might need something that has opened spots in the past such as someone:
passing
facing legal trouble
scheduling conflict
military commitment
The next time I make such a comment I will try to keep it more general such as, "Things happen."

Sounds like something that came on all of a sudden and he couldn’t beat it. Really sad for his students, he seemed to be a very involved teacher.

Re: RIP Teacher's Tournament Winner Larry Martin
Sorry to hear this news. On Reddit, he replied to my post about the audition process saying:
Do not give up. This was my fourth time in the pool, which isn't so important. What is important is that, long after I gave up and moved on, I got the call. It was only afterward that I did the math, just to check. Turns out, I literally got the call 17 and a half months into the 18-month window.
Glad he finally made it!

Or being found ineligible to be on the show and lying about such to get on.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Sat Jan 26, 2019 10:06 am What an awful way to start a Saturday seeing the such sad news.

Re: RIP Teacher's Tournament Winner Larry Martin
Your list was fine, of course. The sad coincidence of timing is just a bit of a shock, especially to the list maker, I imagine. When I saw the news, I didn't even think about the implications for the upcoming TOC. Whoever fills that 15th slot is sure going to have some conflicted feelings. If I were that contestant, I think I'd donate some of my winnings in his name to Belinder Elementary for use by the Marvel News paper that he was involved with there. (I assume he founded the paper, but the article doesn't address that point.)MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Sat Jan 26, 2019 10:06 am What an awful way to start a Saturday seeing the such sad news.

I also note that this death hits literally close to home for me. I knew Martin was from Kansas City, MO, which is the big city a few miles from chez Penguin. But I didn't realize that every school day found him crossing State Line Road to teach at a school in the same school district that graduated my kids. I don't know why a fact like that makes this news hit me a little harder and seem a little more real, but it undeniably does.

Devastated to see this news, Larry came across as a wonderful teacher and person, and certainly a great trivia mind. I hope his family knows that the entire J! community is thinking of them.
Hoping to see a tribute of some kind when the ToC comes around.

Oh no.
He always came across as a committed educator. Here's hoping the ToC contestants can do something Cindy Stowell-esque for him.

Very sad. He was a great champ. He seems to have been a wonderful teacher.
