CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Saurabh Kapadia from New York. S-A-U-R-A-B-H.

Saurabh: That's correct.

Alex: Unusual name, and it caused you some difficulties at school, didn't it?

Saurabh: It did. When I was in grade school, Alex, they would get to the middle of the alphabet when attendance was called. There was usually a pause after "J". And that's when I knew that I had to raise my hand and tell them who I was.

Alex: Identify the correct pronunciation of your name.

Saurabh: Exactly.

Alex: All right. Good for you.

Alex: Jill Regan is from Dedham, Massachusetts. She's an auditor who is working on a 50 by 50, which means what?

Jill: I am. I'm trying to complete all 50 states--visiting all 50 states--before I reach age 50. And I'm right on track. I'm about to hit state 31, and I'll be turning 31.

Alex: So you're gonna do it one per year, until 50.

Jill: I had some catching up to do, but from now on, I think I'm--

Alex: Only one per year.

Jill: One per.

Alex: Okay, good.

Alex: Steven Oppenheim is our champion. He's from Shaker Heights, Ohio. Just started competing in a new league. Pinball?

Steve-O: Yeah, so a friend of mine was like, "I do this pinball league in Berea, Ohio." And I used to love pinball growing up. Been doing it for two seasons now. Just had the playoffs last week, actually. I did not win, but I figured now that I've won a little bit, might grab a pinball machine in my house, so.

Alex: Good idea. All right.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
Jill found the Daily Double on the 18th clue. Steve-O had $2,600, Jill had $1,200, and Saurabh was at $3,000. Jill made it a True Daily Double, wagering $1,200.

INSURANCE $400: A life insurance clause paying twice the face value of the policy for an accidental death is called this, also a film title
(Jill: What is double jeopardy?)
(Alex: No, what is--thank you for the plug, but what is [*]?)

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
PLANT THE FLAG $200: On Guatemala's flag, victory is symbolized by a wreath of this

NONFICTION $800: This hashtag is the title of a memoir by David & Lauren Hogg, students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School

NONFICTION $1000: "Seabiscuit", a colossal bestseller, was her first book

PLANT THE FLAG $400: Fiji's flag shows a coconut palm & a bunch of these fruits
(Saurabh: What are pineapples?)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Jill: $4,400
Steve-O: $4,000
Saurabh: $2,400

Steve-O had a chance to get by Jill even though she outplayed the gentlemen easily on the buzzer.

Steve-O hit DD2 on clue 4 and did 5600+3000 to increase against Jill at 5200. Steve-O played DD3 at clue 6 with a lead of 10600 against Jill still at 5200. Steve-O's $9400 lead went away clue by clue.

At clue 29 Jill had 18000 and Steve-O had 17400. Steve-O rang it wit the chance to take the lead and instead managed to make three groups angry:
Those who know world leaders by name/picture
Those who like sports
Those who like flags

Time ran out before the $2000 clue could be played and trailing was not the place to be for today's FJ! clue begging for a 3/3 success rate. It took me longer to write the title than to solve the clue.

This was a triple get? I'll never figure out J! contestants. Instaget FJ.

Mark did a good job running down all the reasons I was screaming at the TV.

Surprised myself by getting all but MIT in Blackjack.

I didn't know that "laurel" was a plant in terms of a laurel wreath.

Also NHO "placecard".

"Water lily" BMSes to "lotus" huh? Everything I've looked up says those are two totally different plants. Per Wikipedia: "The sacred lotus was once thought to be a water lily, but is now recognized to be a highly modified eudicot in its own family Nelumbonaceae of the order Proteales."

NHO Emmanuel Macron.

Lach Trash: Newbery, good grief, pre-emption, Broadcasting & Cable

No guess on FJ! I know the title but know literally zero about it, as usual.

Is there another Civil War novel they ask about?

And yet another classic movie clue missed. I don’t trust anyone who hasn’t seen Double Indemnity. :geek:

FJ was another WECIB. Not all that surprising an observation from the man who wrote "The Devil's Dictionary".

Opened in 1966? NYNY was more like 1996.

And who was helped out by the reference to "The Red Badge of Courage" in that Brady Bunch episode where Peter eavesdrops and learns what Greg's overdue library book is?
