Re: Wednesday, January 30, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
A couple of ideas for how "Iberian peninsula" was acceptable:
1. It could be considered a translation of Debussy's title Ibéria.
2. (A little more flimsy) Since there was audio under the clue, "this work" could be misunderstood as just pointing to what was being heard without necessarily indicating that the title was wanted.
I was going to go wholeheartedly for #2, but I realized the possibility for #1, which was a lot tidier. After all, they don't make you respond Die Zauberflöte or Samson et Dalila. [edit: actually, I just realized the latter is a bad example; no clue has actually asked for the name of the opera, only for one or both of the title characters. But there are still plenty of other classical works where translations of the original titles are accepted.] Anyhow, a Joan neg (and even a Sean rebound) on that doesn't stop her from winning.
What would have been interesting to see, though, is how undoing Sean's spelling misstep would have affected the endgame. If he hadn't inserted the extra M and the clue selection still played out as it did with the last two in that category left on the board, it would have been $23,600-$13,600-$10,000, and perhaps we'd have seen Joan double up and win by a dollar in FJ.

Sean was fun to watch. I was rooting for him.
I don't remember what I said for FJ. All I remember was it was not the correct response.

Perhaps you're thinking of Dorothy Kilgallen? Also of "What's My Line?" fame.twelvefootboy wrote: ↑Wed Jan 30, 2019 11:01 pm I don't know who Dorothy Parker is but have seen the name. I actually thought she was a gossip columnist.
Dorothy Parker
A clever remarker
Ensured her renown
By writing things down.
Alexander Woollcott, author of the FJ quote, was himself dubbed "Old Vitriol and Violets" by James Thurber.
Recent TV is unpromising for me, but I felt pretty good about Christine Jorgensen for the Louie Anderson role.
Too bad for Sean. He looked to be in the catbird seat.

Actually it was the Algonquin ROUNDTABLE, so "circle" was a hint but not (IMHO) the big red arrow pointing unmistakably to the right answer that some people here seem to think. Certainly a gettable clue, though.

They called themselves The Vicious Circle, so one need not be dismissive of "circle" as TOM.

Is there another famous female writer known for vitriol who was also famous for being in a circle of friends?? And maybe it wouldn’t be so obvious for the general public but my point was that Sean seemed so well read - in addition to working as a librarian.

Both my wife and I swore we heard Sean say "Fritos" instead of "Cheetos", though chalked it up to his overall manner of speaking.
I would assume that the Spellements category would have kept up the C theme. Our guesses were Co (to try to get someone to stumble on copper), and probably Cn in the bottom box.

I think Cs is going in the bottom box, "caesium" vs "cesium" be damned.spell4yr wrote: ↑Thu Jan 31, 2019 11:10 am Both my wife and I swore we heard Sean say "Fritos" instead of "Cheetos", though chalked it up to his overall manner of speaking.

Instaget for me, as Dorothy Parker is said to have written one of the two poems I have memorized:
“I like to have a martini,
Two at the very most.
After three I'm under the table,
after four I'm under my host.”

Another Instaget FJ here. We read Dorothy Parker in high school during our poetry unit, and she's stuck with me since:
Razors pain you;
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren’t lawful;
Nooses give;
Gas smells awful;
You might as well live.

53/54 R (Missed Rosenstein, Carrel, Nittany, *Baskets*(Watched before today's WWTBAM), and Triumph.)
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Tallchief, Amy Adams, Yucca, LeSabre, *Baskets*(Had I watched today's WWTBAM first.), Goliath, Habanera
Would have been 55/56 R had they finished the Spellements category.

Dorothy Parker was an instaget for me. I am indebted to her for numerous witticisms. My favorite: when a youngish person gestures that I should precede her through a doorway and says (snarkily) "Age before beauty," I graciously flit through the doorway and murmur "Pearls before swine."

Would you say her "Razors pain you" poem quoted above scans? It maintains the basic meter but with subtle variations to keep it from being overly sing-songy. I think this martini poem is similar in that respect. I'm not saying Parker wrote it. I'm just saying the scansion wouldn't rule out the possibility.

I like to drink a martini
One, maybe two at the most
Three and I'm under the table
Four and I'm under my host.
...reads much cleaner without changing anything essential.
And venturing a bit off-topic now, but nonetheless--her "Résumé" above inspired the following lyric by her friend Ring Lardner a couple of years later:
I feel just like poor Hamo-let
Who said, "To be or not to?"
To kill oneself is wrong, and yet
I b'lieve I've almost got to.
The girl I love is so unkind!
When I am gone, she'll rue it.
So I will die if I can find
A pleasant way to do it.
But cyanide, it gripes inside;
Bichloride blights the liver;
And I am told one catches cold
When one jumps in the river.
To cut my throat would stain my coat
And make my valet furious.
Death beckons me, but it must be
A death that ain't injurious.
A shot would make my eardrums ache
And wake my niece, who's teething;
A rope would wreck my classic neck
And interfere with breathing;
I can't take gas because, alas,
The odor's unendurable.
O Lord above, please tell me of
A death that ain't incurable.
I'm smart and I want respect.

Thanks, John Boy. “Roundtable”was floating in the back of my brain but didn’t’t make it to the front.
