Blanked on humanity Tuesday, went with “Oh the horror”

Did not see the casino clue, probably would have gone with New York, New York.

Got Circus Circus.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

I was thrown off by mention of New York for the Mariah Carey clue, and I said Natasha instead of Lara (probably thinking of Boris Badenov).

I whiffed on Monday even though I read the Crane book in high school (or a short story version?)
Easy to get the nursing home friendly clue about the airship.

The writer and the singer were never going to happen for me.

Another whiff on Friday - I knew Neptune was found mathematically - we had telescopes and calculus and Newton's laws since 1700's so the date seemed way too late. I just guessed "The Milky Way", thinking it was our first epiphany about existing in a galaxy (that would wait for Hubble in the early 20th century). But yah, read the category

I knew all three extra clues, but only got Leary in real time. I know Ithaca, New York from a the opening of the Three Stooges Meet Hercules movie at the drive-in theater.
Disclaimer - repeated exposure to author's musings may cause befuddlement.

Had no chance with Mariah Carey; didn't listen to much pop music in the 90s and couldn't name a single song of hers. Initial thought was Celine Dion but I knew she wasn't born in New York, so I wound up blanking.

Couldn't pull Ithaca in time.
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

2/5 (last two)

Didn't know Mariah was from NY, but with a process of elimination, and knowing enough music from the 90s, thought she was a good guess.

Guessed a Bronte for the writer one. I don't even know which one. Let's just say Emily.

I feel as if I would have gotten Monday's about half of the time--cost me a perfect week. Made a lucky guess on Thursday.

My ex and I stayed at Circus Circus several time in the late '80's and early '90's, and I definitely associate it with the low-limit blackjack tables. I also had the sense that New York New York was too new to fit the question (turns out that it opened in 1997).
