I obviously don't know any of the teams' internal strategies, but I think that Team Ken pulled off a second-level move with their lineup to thwart Team Austin's strategy. I have a feeling that Team Austin was counting on Team Ken using their ideal lineup in the second game, and had so they had chosen to play Austin in SJ assuming that he was going to face Monica and Ben. Ken's lineup management is probably the best strategic move I've seen on this show.

Indeed. Would that Cervantes had been so considerate. Of course, his name might not have come up so much in that case.
The favor Cervantes did us is being an exact contemporary of Shakespeare. Well, he was born 17 years earlier, but it used to be the case that they died on the same date--April 23, 1616. Newer research spoils the fun by suggesting Cervantes died on April 22. Before that, the trivia chestnut cum bar bet was cleaner. You could say, "Shakespeare and Cervantes died on the same date, April 23, 1616 Which one died first?" And the answer was Cervantes. He died 10 days earlier than Shakespeare.
Spoiler
Protestant England had not yet made the switch to the Gregorian calendar. April 23 in Spain was only April 13 in England.

I thought in their strategy dialogue they said they put Austin in the SJ round in the expectation that he would face Ken. Sometimes these conversations were hard to follow, but I thought that was what they said. So everything worked according to both plans, just (unsurprisingly) Ken was better.

I think that Austin's team is playing to have Roger avoid Ken, and they are consciously playing to not come in third.

If Roger can dominate DJ in today's game, then with big DD's the team can safely get to the second round. Roger can't do that unless he has a buzzer advantage - and the thought may be that he has that advantage against most people - but not Ken.

The wildcard is none of us know how strong Leonard is. Despite Austin's demeanor, I'm pretty sure Roger will help them prepare and they'll know how strong each player is.

Agreed. He's still got it.

His new book sounds like it could be interesting.
Planet Funny is an interesting book! Comedy/humor is such a huge topic I wasn't sure what he would cover in a <300 page book. But he does a great job hitting the highlights of humor throughout history and focusing on the evolution of comedy in different areas of culture (especially how pervasive it has become!) Like how we used to have to watch a comedy show to see comedy, but now we expect advertisements to be funny, we expect brands and politicians to be witty on Twitter, etc. If you've read Brainiac or Maphead, it's a similar style of book (though the subject matter of Planet Funny is a lot broader).

There seems to be a fair bit of interest in this tournament from board regulars. If so, good on you.

Me? After 50 years of watching J!, I've become accustomed to a particular rhythm: intro, J! round, commercial break, interview, J! round (2), commercial break, DJ! round, commercial break, FJ!, end of game.

Watching (or trying to watch) a completely different format is disorienting, as they inject multiple interviews and glimpses into the "strategy room" etc. Not to mention frustrating that they can't get more than one round of a game into a 30-minute show.

And as much as I like all of these players (and I really do), it's difficult to watch people who've had their regular-season shot and a tournament shot as well, and who've won hundreds of thousands of dollars, get invited back (some of them again, and again and again), to the point where Brad admits he has "no other job than Jeopardy!"

This new format seems completely contrived and I just can't get interested in it. Plus 20 eager newbies swimming in the pool will have no chance of getting on this season, because the places that might have gone to them are taken up by yet another tournament.

I know, I know, it's their show and they can run it any way they choose. I just don't care for it and I'm eagerly awaiting the return of regular play.

And I'll shut up now.

imo they should have done a prime time special with this tournament and kept the regular game going

You're acting like super-tournaments are a new thing. I mean, the Million-Dollar Masters was in 2002, for example. (And the UTOC resulted in far more than 20 fewer slots for new contestants in the season it was held.) And as has often been noted, boardies aren't the show's target audience. If casual fans want to see some of their favorite players brought back to, among other things, fuel arguments about who is the GOAT, then it's rational for the producers to make that happen. And I say this as someone who's been trying forever to become a first-time contestant.

As for the format of the current team tourney, it's experimental and it's a matter of taste. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would. If it underperforms in the ratings, perhaps the experiment won't be repeated. But I like that they're trying something new.

I'm enjoying the tournament, but I wish they'd take thirty seconds to reiterate the wild card flow chart. The tournament has a different set of assumptions from regular Jeopardy that take some getting used to.

I don't mind occasional super tournaments like the BOTD or MDM, but they should only be every few years or so. I don't need to see another Brad vs. Ken match every year.

But I'm not a huge fan of the team concept. Instead of having the first round each take one day, I wish they had used an entire 30 minute episode showing the draft, catching up with the players and showing strategy in assigning people to which round for all six teams. Then they could have an entire game in one day.

On top of all this, aside from the UToC which killed a few months from the schedule, 2-week super-tournaments aren't really depriving any new players of slots, because Jeopardy! always airs 3-4 special play or tournament events per year and around the same times each year calendared to coincide with sweeps.

I absolutely would’ve preferred to see ten games of jeopardy rather than eight with this impressive field. If I was drawing up the format (once the team component was predetermined) I would’ve had more of a round robin play with various combinations of the three teams playing in pre-lim matches. Sure it was fun to see Alex versus Brad twice but I would have also liked to see them against Ken, Roger, Matt, Larissa, Ben, etc.

The video recap and strategy sessions could’ve been dropped but there was the simple fact that three players per team means you need three times as much interview time. In my format everyone would play a Jeopardy! Round at some point in the pre-lims and therefore they would get to their interview eventually but some wouldn’t be heard from until the sixth game, so it’s understandable that they didn’t take this route.

They were probably hedging their bets. A draft-only episode might have proved exciting as "the Decision" or "the Secret of Al Capone's Vault"...or it might not have.

Yes, recently it seems like there are 3 tournaments each year that rerun for 6 weeks during the summer hiatus.
