I was happy to get Pulp Fiction. I am not a big movie person, but I was all over that one. It did seem kind of YKITOYD, though the stacked field of Best Picture nominees for 1994 could have been a hint.
Even then, just guessing based on a movie's content, which film do you pick for "Son of a Preacher Man" and "Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon"? Me, I'd go with Forrest Gump. So we're back to "kind of YKITOYD" as you say. I agree, down to the "kind of" qualifier. I didn't actually know it. But I knew the Tarantino vibe and his penchant for quirky classic song soundtrack choices that juxtapose ironically or just oddly with the onscreen action.

Get ready for a negative comment. I, for one, am glad to see Alex J. go. Watching him play annoys me, so intense and doesn't seem to enjoy the experience. On more than one occasion, he would hesitate (kill time) and then at last second blurt out the correct answer.
I don't think he's killing time. He's checking to make sure he's really got it right, that there isn't another better response, that he's parsed the clue correctly, etc. If I get on the show and uncover a DD, I hope I have the presence of mind to do the Alex Jacob Check. That would've saved my bacon on one of his DDs where my first thought was a confident "Who is Euclid?" Reading the clue one more time helped me focus on "THIS TWO-WORD BRANCH" and switch to "What is Euclidean GEOMETRY?"
I suspect TPTB were committed to uncovering all clues in this match. They didn't need to since, unlike in a quarterfinal match, leaving clues uncovered wouldn't unfairly disadvantage someone for a wildcard spot. If I'm right, I suspect the contestants knew this so that would eliminate a reason for Alex to kill time. Also if I'm right, I hope they continue this practice for the rest of the tournament and carry it right on back into regular play. They can rebuild the game. They have the technology. They can make it better than it was. Better, faster, more compelling. [cue theme music]

Boo on the wager. If you are playing by yourself, ok, but as a team player? I think it was foolhardy to say the least. There.
Why is it foolhardy to give your team their best chance at winning? The alternative is to take the "safe" route where Buzzy has a less likely path to victory but, hey, at least it'll be BUZZY'S fault if the team loses rather than Alex'.
(NOTE: per the Jeopardy! Style Sheet, I left the possessive S off that last word. It looks terrible that way.)

If Alex had done his standard $100 minimum on the second DD, here's how things would have looked entering FJ:
Code: Select all
Team Buzzy: 0 19100 19100 39000
Team Colby: 7600 7600 15200 22800
Team Austin: 5200 8900 14100 23000
Should the last column for Team Buzzy read 38200 or am I not understanding your chart?

For Pulp Fiction I don't think they could have:

Arguably though, if they'd picked Misirlou or Bustin' Surfboards, that would have made it easier. I remember the surf tracks from that movie better than anything else. They seemed so incongruously right.

Man, I had a bad feeling on the SOUNDTRACK DD - that category was too wide open for me to feel any confidence. Would have bet $5, especially with a whopping $0 carryover score from Day 1. Pretty Woman came to mind, but I discarded it because 'woman' was already in the clue.
Also, Pretty Woman came out in 1990 so I knew Alex had to be wrong as soon as he said it. Other than that, it's a decent guess.

I missed FJ. Presidential trivia is not my thing, so naturally I panicked and scribbled down a 20th c. election year. I only ended up off by 8 years. Agree that the 19th c. guesses made no sense. I mean, there's no reason why the last time couldn't be hundreds of years ago, but safe to assume the writers wouldn't make you go that far back
Sure they would if there's a suss-outable reason to go that far back. Especially in a tournament. In this case I made the same mistake as Buzzy. I went back to 1868 because I knew Grant had been a general and was elected based on his post-war popularity. The music was almost over by then--I'd panicked and flailed for most of it--so I mentally wrote down 1868. I just didn't get my thoughts organized enough to remember there was a more recent time when we'd elected a general based on his post-war popularity.

weird...triple stumper and this was an instaget for me....also marking the 1st final jeopardy solve during this tournament for me
Also instaget here. I thought of Eisenhower immediately and had 1952 written down before he finished reading the clue, then spent 30 seconds trying to figure out how it couldn't be that easy and trying to come up with some other answer. It was, and I didn't, and for the first time in the tournament I had an instaget FJ solve that was a TS for the All-Star contestants.
As they said in the 1950s, I like Ike.

Yeah, I think I put 19500 in columns 2 and 3 at first, then corrected them without correcting column 4. Luckily the highest maximum score is largely irrelevant to the important calculations! But I'll fix it now. Thanks for pointing it out.

You Never Can Tell is the only song I can point to a still of the associated Pulp Fiction scene and say with 100% certainty: "That's where this played" (the dance competition)
I was right, though, on Girl You'll Be A Woman Soon, though: (Mia's OD) (That one was >90%) and I could place Son of a Preacher Man in the film, just not when (turns out it's when Vincent first meets Mia)
Misirlou and Bustin Surfboards, incidentally, would've skunked me unless it was an audio clue.

Buzzy made a fun observation on Twitter which I didn't notice until now. This wildcard match was a rematch between Buzzy, Alan, and Austin. Even more interesting, that trio is 0/12 in Final Jeopardy.

With apologies for not being current on the literature, has anyone crunched the numbers for the get rate on super tourney finals vs. regular games? Anecdotally, in this tournament it seems safer to bet on not knowing final than vice versa. Obviously, that is easy to say after two days of triple stumpers.
Here are the FJ get rates for every tournament featuring returning players:

Every one is entitled to their opinion. But it's odd to dislike a contestant that plays to win, actually thinks about answers rather than just blurting something out, and gives him and his team the best chance to win by wagering optimally.
And by the way, he does enjoy his experience. He is intense and competition is fun for those types.

Yeah, with how well he plays + how much he posts on Twitter, it's hard to imagine Alex not loving Jeopardy. He is polite, quick, hides a lot of information.
