CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Karen Locascio is from Massachusetts. And I hear that an extended member of your family was a clue on Jeopardy!

Karen: That's right. He was--my stepbrother, Brian, wrote a book called Algorithms to Live By. And you had a clue where you showed different algorithms from the book and then you asked for what they were. The answer was the algorithms.

Alex: Now, I've heard from people who were clues on our program before. And they took a great deal of delight in that, because for a while, they became famous. Is--was that the case with your stepbrother?

Karen: Yes, yes. He was thrilled. And our whole family was thrilled.

Alex: Jonathan Lindeen is from Denver, Colorado. Proposed to his wife on a small...

Jonathan: On a small island in the Stockholm archipelago. Picked a beautiful spot on the Sweden trip. Took a boat out, got to the very edge of the archipelago. Found a nice, beautiful cliff overlooking the sea and asked the question.

Alex: Okay. Good for you.

Alex: Lindsey Shultz is our champion. Like most champions on Jeopardy!, she collects things. She has a special item in her collection. And is it really a stuffed lobster?

Lindsey: It is, indeed. While I appreciate nice presents from people, I'm also completely thrilled when people bring me the most hideous souvenirs they can find from wherever they are. One of my college roommates won by bringing me a four-foot stuffed lobster back with her from Maine that has now made the move through four or five apartments with me.

Alex: Right.

TRIPLE STUMPERS IN THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
"R.R." $1000: The USPS offers this evidence of delivery, a postcard with the addressee's signature

BEHIND BARS $800: This brand of bitters was originally made in Venezuela as a medicine

SPRING MEDLEY $1000: Flowers newly in bloom include this one, "aggie" for short

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
Karen: $6,200
Lindsey: $4,000
Jonathan: $3,400

FINAL JEOPARDY! CATEGORY
ROYAL HOUSES

VENUSIAN MONOLOGUES/MARTIAN CHRONICLES
Four-fifths for first place.
Jonathan: Wager $9,001 to cover Lindsey.
Lindsey: You're faced with a legitimate choice in strategy. You can either choose to cover Karen, hoping that you give the correct response and Jonathan doesn't, in which case you'll want to wager $5,401 to cover Karen's doubled score, but no more than $7,000 if you want to top Jonathan on a Triple Stumper; or bet up to $2,799 and win if both Jonathan and Karen miss Final.
Karen: If you think Lindsey is going to wager to cover you, try wagering less than $2,600 to beat Jonathan and Lindsey on the Triple Stumper; or, if you think Lindsey is going to wager small in hopes of a Triple Stumper, wager between $2,801 (venusian, to top a $0 wager by Lindsey) and $8,200 (martian, which may win in some cases but may also risk dropping you from second to third place if you get Final wrong).

FINAL JEOPARDY! CLUE
Family name of Bonnie Prince Charlie's brother Henry, whom his supporters called Henry IX of England

FINAL SCORES
Karen: $8,200 - $8,200 = $0 (What is York?) (3rd place: $1,000)
Lindsey: $11,000 - $10,995 = $5 (What is tudor?) (2nd place: $2,000)
Jonathan: $13,000 + $9,001 = $22,001 (What is Stuart?) (New champion: $22,001)

This should be what Karen mentioned at chat time for her step brother Brian Christian:
#7781, aired 2018-06-11 SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY BOOKS $2000: Pick a home or when to marry with these series of steps "to Live By: The Computer Science of Human Decisions"

No BMS for Massachussetts Adams since the son was not a VP.

That was a great miss for the Van Gogh clue with "My Left Ear."

Lindsey let a gift DD3 clue get by her that cost her the lead. It turned out not to matter since she did not get the FJ! clue. Lindsey leaves 2/5 on the FJ! clues. If Lindsey does not make the TOC then yesterday's FJ! round wager & result is a good place to revisit.

For the FJ! clue I matched Lindsey in kind of Pavlov-ing off Henry. Fortunately, I made the switch to match Jonathan as I could hear the burr of the name said more than once in Outlander. I wonder if the correct name is said in the "Bonnie Prince Charlie" episode of Mr. Peabody and Sherman? I'm sure that is the first time I heard the guy's name.

Went French on the Henry and said Bourbon. In retrospect, the correct move would have been going backward 1 from Henry the IX to Henry the VIII.

Coryat: 39,600
51 R/2 W
DD: 3/3
FJ: :(
LT: Moulin Rouge! (DD), first contact, mattress pad thai

I shuddered when I saw the FJ! category, then thought I had figured it out with the Henry VIII --> Tudor connection, then had my hopes dashed. Not knowing much about Bonnie Prince Charlie other than the name was my downfall. Guess I need to go read up on the Jacobite rebellion. Good solve by the new champ.

I hate it when I neg because I almost had the right response. Today it was apparently mixing up Angostura bitters with langostino lobster to come up with "Angostino."

I also, like Lindsey, got suckered into guessing Vincent for the $2000 clue in Artists on Film.

NHO agapanthus. Or, if I have, I have forgotten it. I guess we could call that aga-mem-non.

Jack cheese is a type of cheddar?! I had no idea.
Sprinkles are for winners.

0/5 in Vice President.

NHO "Red Rover", which led to an "all but $200" moment.

Actually knew rum = mojito because a friend was begging me to try one, but none of the local bars seemed to even know what it was. I had several in Hawaii, though. Two, or three, or four. I lost count.

NHO the first two songs in Lyrically Inaccurate, which is surprising.

I answered "What is an ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE SONG THAT I WISH WOULD DIE ALREADY?!" on Lyrically Inaccurate for $800. Think they'd take it?

Ran the Shopping Abbreviations category.

Didn't recognize anything in Artists on Film. Also derped up the Dog Name category.

No guess on FJ! No idea what to even WAG.

That flower looked like every other purple flower to me (I'm never going to get those right...), then he says agapanthus. Sure.

Instaget FJ. "Bonnie" Prince Charlie....that was Scotland? Yes? No? Well whatever, that's what I thought of -> Stuart, done.

We're never going to see another 5-day champ, are we.

No, I usually stuck to myself during recess. And I was literally the only child in my neighborhood, so "go outside and play" was always a solo effort.

Another Tudor here. I don't know any other royalty names besides Windsor and the Duke of Earl. The category had me hoping they were talking about buildings, not families.

I was watching for signs of fatigue for Lindsay's 3rd game of the morning session and that may have been a factor, but she lost outright on FJ. She didn't vacuum up the bottom rows like she has been. Hopefully, the $100K club will suffice for her to the TOC next century.
