Poe was a WECIB for me. It was funny how they saved "sporting" for last. And then they had to have a clue with Voldemort (Patriots) in it to represent the football.

Yes, I was impressed that no one fell into that trap. This was an exciting game with three worthy players.

Like you, I interpreted the "spacesuit" clue as looking for the expansion of an initialism.

For whatever strange reason, my first response for FJ! was O. Henry, but it only took me about eight seconds to get to Poe, leaving me lots of time to write his name.

The saddest triple stumper for me was DeForest Kelley.

He's done more than Star Trek although there is little beyond him playing Dr. "Bones" McCoy in previous clues:

Funny, I always associated Coca-Cola with the Kalahari desert.

Newcastle Brown Ale is now brewed by Heineken, in the Netherlands. Also, there's no coal there anymore. On the bright side, Geordie Shore is still going strong eight years and 157 episodes on.

The Clive of India TS recalls this UToC game, though it was in much more YEKIOYD form that previous time. Luckily for Brad, he had quite a comfortable lead going in. If I recall correctly, only five members of the old Sony board clicked the box for that clue that week, though the board at that time included quite a few tourney participants.

Kate gave a response of "what is Discharge" in what I thought was the 3 Consecutive Consinants category. Had me scratching my head and waiting for a reversal. I thought it was supposed to be the first three letters of the word they were looking for. What was the actual clue/category?

No problem with "synchronize," "bootstraps," and "aphrodisiac"?

Always remember Cyrus McCormick from one of those compendiums of bad student essays you used to see floating around the internet. Some poor student wrote that "Cyrus McCormick invented a mechanical reaper that did the work of a thousand men", only they missed writing a critical 'e' in the name of the device.

DeForest Kelly is a Hawley-Smoot name for me, but I had no idea what the person was famous for.

It's just a sign of my advancing age (57) that someone I think of as a mainstay of nerd culture is (apparently) fading into obscurity. I would expect contestants to know him from Star Trek, not (necessarily) from his previous appearances as J! clues.

I'm fortunate that I'm not feeling my age physically, but life reminds you that you're getting older. I'm playing oboe in Beethoven's First Symphony this semester with a 30-year-old (excellent) conductor. The first time I played Beethoven's First was before he was born!

This may not be comforting, but imho, anyone besides Shatner/Nimoy were already obscure except to Trekkies. I couldn't pull his name but could solve the reverse (inverse? converse? universe?) clue. He is the metaphorical third tenor in the show outright, and dying 20 years ago hasn't helped his Q score.

George Takei has assumed third place behind Shatner/Nimoy and I can't name Uhuru(?) or Chekhov, or tell you if they are still alive. Patrick Stuart, Spiner, and Wheaton are all I've got in the next franchise, with Wheaton only because of the BBT show. The other spin-offs, fuggedaboutit.

I probably should look up that third tenor. But now I'm distracted because "oboe" has only 25% consonants and now I want to know if there are any 4:1 or 5:1 everyday words.
ETA - tops out at 4:1
These are the 5-letter words consisting of 4 vowels and a consonant:
Spoiler
AALII AERIE AREAE AUREI LOOIE OIDIA QUEUE
ADIEU AIOLI AUDIO COOEE LOUIE OORIE URAEI
AECIA AQUAE AURAE EERIE MIAOU OURIE ZOEAE

There used to be a time when I was uncomfortable if the pilot was younger than me. Those days are long gone. (I have a friend who is a retired pilot, and his son became a pilot. He's a 24-year old 747 pilot.)

Very often now, a clue comes up on the board about something that I remember happening. When it turns out to be a Triple Stumper, I shake my head and say, "They weren't even born yet."

Likewise. I read that one in a Richard Lederer book circa 1993. (I recall "McCormick" being used as an adjective for the device, à la "Gatling gun.")

56 R (Missed Dr. Quinn, DeForest Kelly, Overhaul, and Bootstraps.)
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Cyrus McCormick, Space Suit, Marie Antoinette, (Hedda Gabler), George Washington, India, Newsome

Marie Antoinette a stumper?!?!

Ozzie Newsome is definitely my proudest get of the season. What would I ever do without J! Archive? :D

Got all the trash except spacesuit. Like the contestants, I over thought the clue.
FJ was pretty much WECIB. For those who didn't know Poe is associated with Baltimore, there's a reason the football team is named the Ravens.

I had the same reaction as Alex. "Simple! (duh)" ... Great minds, I guess ;)

OK, I'm thinking about committing seppuku for missing the Hedda Gabbler DD. My mind went straight to "___ Doll's House" and got distracted trying to remember the leading article. If this happened to me IRL, I'd say just take me out back and shoot me - especially when given "title character"

Kid's week FJ. As soon as I saw Hitchcock, I thought they'd go for du Maurier, but now I realize she's not an American Author, is she? Surprised that 2 players struggled with that clue.

Never heard of DeForest Kelley, but of course I recognize the face and character

The Marie Antoinette stand and stare was another head scratcher
