OPENING REMARKS
Alex: Thank you, Johnny. Thank you, ladies and gentlemen. At the end of yesterday's program, you heard me ask the question, "Is it too early to start making comparisons between James and Ken Jennings? Well, looking back, in his first four games, Ken Jennings averaged about $30,000 per win. James is averaging more than twice that amount. So Laura and Jeff, good luck to you. Here we go. The Jeopardy! Round. Categories, please...

(James: What are the Articles of Confederation?)

SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK
James: $4,200
Laura: $3,400
Jeff: $0

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Laura Hertzfeld is a journalist from Venice, California, who specializes in immersive journalism. What does that mean?

Laura: Yeah, so I work with journalists using new technology like virtual reality and augmented reality to tell more impactful stories. Putting people into VR goggles and other environments to really get them into the heart of different places in the world.

Alex: I saw some members of the Sony personnel walking around our studios one day with these fantastic goggles on, and that was virtual reality stuff.

Laura: It is, yeah. It's the future.

Alex: No, it's the present.

Laura: That, too.

Alex: It's the present.

Alex: Jeff Henderson from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Retail manager who once did a heroic thing, I think. You saved 10 children how?

Jeff: Well, I was a camp counselor, and I had told them very scary stories before going to bed. And then one of them woke up in the middle of the night, and the cabin next to us was on fire. So I got everyone out, saved the children, and then aft--when I found out--realized, what I realized is that the kid wouldn't have been awake if it hadn't been for the scary stories that we had told. So not the most heroic way to save.

[Laughter]

Alex: Canadians are strange, aren't we? Aren't we?

Alex: James Holzhauer is our champion. We have not talked about your gambling. You're a sports gambler, so you don't play the tables, I guess. But do you have a system? Do you have a favorite sport you like to gamble on?

James: You know, my favorite sport is whatever will take the most money on, and right now that turns out to be the NFL, so.

Alex: Okay. But you're concentrating on just a slight margin, or you go big-time?

James: Usually pretty slight margins. You just have to bet a lot and hope that--

Alex: You have to bet a lot.

James: Well...

Alex: Hey, you've got $240--close to a quarter million dollars already. You can make some substantial bets.

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
James: $6,400
Laura: $5,600
Jeff: $200

Laura did well and made James work harder than yesterday. James aided Laura's attempt with the miss on DD1 and later a clue call in THE CIVIL WAR after DD2 had been found there.

Did not matter as even if Laura farmed and solved DD3 it's a still a loss.

It would be sad if that FJ! clue did not go 2/2. Come on writers, really?

Yeah, James vs. the big shots needs to happen quicker than five years from now or so. First, James will have to navigate being the BMOC for the TOC. Of course that means being defeated before November.

Prior Presidents' Trophy winners with TOC finish:
Brian Weikle - 2nd
Tom Walsh - 2nd
David Madden - semis
Mehrun Etebari - quarters (also non-winner on 500 Questions)
Dan Pawson most wins - 1st or Larissa Kelly most money - 2nd
Justin Bernbach - semis
Tom Nissley - 2nd
Jason Keller - semis
Julia Collins - 3rd
Matt Jackson - 2nd
Austin Rogers - 3rd (Seth Wilson also 12 wins - quarters)

Laura made a game of it until she made two typical mistakes late. 1, she didn't have a plan and therefore didn't know what to wager on the DD. 2, she didn't take her time and think about her response to the DD, instead just blurted out the first thing that came to mind.

And then naturally did not wager everything in a runaway two player situation.

I like James a lot, I like the idea of him being around for a few weeks, I like his play style, I like his wagers (except the one in Game #2), but what I would really like would be for the clue writers to give him a FJ above Teen Tournament levels.

Yeah, he won more money than Ken in a game, but when Ken broke the record, he did it on a sole get.

Good grief. James gets an absolute cupcake for a DD that wouldn't be out of place in a Teen Tournament "Bull Run' while Laura gets some ridiculous DD about some sea creature.

Completely agreed on the first point, but picking James in the ToC would be like picking Duke in the NCAA Tournament.

I love watching James play, and I might be in the minority with this opinion, but, like Duke this year, he's certainly not unbeatable.. trailed deep into day two and again at halftime on day three. ETA: A few different things happen tonight and he's sent packing too.

IMO, someone willing to DD hunt (RobW, Dhruv) and/or possessing a decent buzzer or academic knowledge base (a fresh Josh Hill, Fenster, Eric) have the potential to keep a game competitive in ToC play. A lot different than winning, but still...

Well, that's a bummer. Laura is the daughter of a friend of mine and grew up in my neighborhood. Screaming "CONCH!" at the TV somehow didn't work. At least she caught on about the need to hunt DDs.

Seriously, the writers need to step up those FJs. This is getting ridiculous. And as we saw tonight, James can be tripped up.

Even with a couple stumbles, he was still unstoppable.

====

I can never remember which is VT and which is NH, and just like "which planet is biggest", I can never find a way to keep them separated in my mind either. Even worse, that cost me the run.

I've never heard it as "gave up the ghost" before (Matthew Mark for $800). Also my only miss.

Misspelled was a tough category and I went 0/5. I looked at $200 five times and didn't spot a single misspelling. That one should've gone with a WAY more obvious word than some obscure town in Massachusetts that most people wouldn't think twice about.

What was the TOM for "clam" on Mollusks for $400? Lots of mollusks have shells. Those could easily have been snails, which seems like the biggest pavlov by far for "shelled mollusk".

NHO any of those REM songs (or really, any REM song), my only miss in that category.

M.G. gave me my only run today.

No guess on FJ! Don't recognize the correct response.

Lach Trash: morning glory. Also got the Bill of Rights DD.

Ahh, Laura, if you're stalking here, I was rooting for you!! You saw what you were up against and you played to win. I can't imagine the shock and awe factor of going up against James - on top of the adrenaline and nerves from just being there. Wow.

Articles of Confederation was a surprising DD miss, but James brushed it off and got back to work

Magnolia - not exactly negbait, but I saw that coming and swerved to pick up the trash for morning glory (a rare get for me on flowers)

Agree that these Finals have been way too easy. Boo!

The second mention of nautilus by Jeff was way too funny. He looked stunned when Alex negged him. Surprised that no one could pull argonauts. I hesitated because I've never heard of that animal. Just looked it up, and they're also referred to as paper nautiluses, but that doesn't mesh with the other part of the clue

Reichstag though?
