SCORES AT THE FIRST BREAK

Ali: $3,200
Mike: $800

CONTESTANT INTERVIEWS

Alex: Welcome back. We have good news for Mike Dindoffer from Massachusetts. Your response of Parmesan a little while ago has been deemed acceptable. So you're getting $2,000 back, so instead of being at negative $1,200, you're a plus $800.

Mike: All right.

Alex: All right. Now, you're a writer and a teacher. And I understand that you use the Jeopardy! format in some of your classes.

Mike: I do. Whenever we have a test coming up, I like to practice some of the test--some of the test questions with science Jeopardy! And so I try to do a few voices. I couldn't ever replicate your voice or Johnny's, of course, but I try to spice it up and get them excited.

Alex: Okay. And they like it, right?

Mike: Yes, they love it.

Alex: Okay.

Alex: Ali Filipowicz, from Alexandria, Virginia. You met your husband because of trivia?

Ali: Yes, I did. I did quiz bowl all through middle school and high school and wanted to continue when I got to college. So I went to the activities fair when I started school, and John was there manning the table for the teams. So I signed up, and after a few months of practices and traveling to competitions, we got together, and we've been together ever since.

Alex: Okay. Do you still try to outdo each other with your knowledge of trivia?

Ali: Yeah.

Alex: You do. Who wins?

Ali: Usually me.

Alex: Okay, good for you. That's why you're here and not him.

Alex: James Holzhauer is our champion. He got married in a swimsuit. Don't we all?

James: My usually lovely wife, Melissa, decided--

Alex: Wait a minute. Your usually lovely--?

James: Well, listen to the story, you'll know. We got married in Hawaii next to a waterfall, and she said, "We should both wear our swimsuits. It'll be so awesome." So I decked out my swimsuit with a Chippendales collar and some cuffs to really go all out, and the night before the wedding, she says, "I'm gonna wear a white dress tomorrow." So she's standing there in her beautiful white dress. I'm in my Chippendale outfit. Great wedding.

[Laughter]

Alex: They do that to us sometimes.

James: Yeah.

JEOPARDY! ROUND DAILY DOUBLE
James found the Daily Double on the 20th clue. James had $10,400, Ali had $3,200, and Mike was at $1,200. James wagered $9,812.

CITY ADJECTIVES $400: Cantabrigian means from one of 2 noted college cities named this
(Alex: [After James makes his wager] A significant date?)
(James: Anniversary.)
(Alex: Okay.)
(James: I don't know why I enjoyed that day in my swimsuit, but...)
...
(Alex: [*], Mass., or [*] in the UK.)

SCORES AT THE END OF THE JEOPARDY! ROUND
James: $22,012
Ali: $3,600
Mike: $1,800

David Madden 19x: $430,400
Julia Collins 20x: $428,100
James Holzhauer 7x: $415,035
Matt Jackson 13x: $411,612
Austin Rogers 12x: 411,000

If James had not set the one-day record earlier this week he probably could have set it higher today if so motivated. As is he left plenty of money on the table playing the birthday game.

James and his sweep the week paid off big time.

Winner of the All-Stars Fantasy Sweepstakes: Joan Z. from Las Vegas

The FJ! clue wanted a J! favorite. I've watched the show enough to know where to go by now. Mike's miss cost him nothing other than pride when it should have been 3/3.

How often does AOC come up on J! anyway? ;)
I'm somewhat surprised she hasn't yet, though more so that she has not yet in LL.

Somehow he seemed to put the buzzer down for extended stretches, and still had almost 30k Coryat and the second highest score alltime. Amazing.

During the break I wondered if he'd bet the ~31k he could afford to safely. Like there was ever any doubt

Until he misses a big DD and his opponents take advantage (so that the board being drained of high-value clues works against him), which would require 1) his opponents actually hunting for them, and 2) the DDs he does hit being more difficult than "Cantabrigian + college cities -> Cambridge" and "Carthage + Spanish + Colombian city -> Cartagena"...

And yeah, instaget FJ. Come on, J! writers, you can do better than this.

Also, how the hell did the writers not anticipate Parmagian?

Amazing player, the best I've ever seen. Just a casual $89k. It seemed almost pedestrian.

Fourth second-row DD this week?! Including two in a single day (Thursday)!? Has that ever happened?

Hard not to think the producers are intentionally stirring it up to make one of two interesting things happen: either someone with the more traditional approach to clue order gets DDs before James, or James gets a huge payoff when he finds it. Not kosher either way.

Gotta give Mike credit for making a decent comeback from his early $2000 hole.
Never been on J!, but once won a knockoff version that aired on local access TV.

Not gonna say I'm 100% positive about this, but I am fairly sure that James set another record today -- highest score after the first round. I don't remember anyone ever making it to $20K in SJ alone. Correct me if I'm wrong though.

We can add obliterating the mark for most $ after the single-J! round to the long and growing list of records James has set. And substantially exceeding the highest previous 1-day winnings record twice in 4 games - just wow. With every jaw-dropping victory, James furthers his case for consideration as the GOAT (at least with regard to regular-play games). The astonishing thing about today's game is that he casually racked up over $89K despite holding back on DD2 to give another shout-out to his daughter's birthdate (I had expected him to go all-in given his opponents' scores); and like boson I got the sense that at one point in DJ he eased up a little on buzzing in. It's a tribute to how much James's stratospheric level of play and massive DD wagers have spoiled us that the amount of his winnings today - which is way more than any of the show's previous thousands of contestants ever won in a single game - felt almost like a letdown.

I've said it before - I feel privileged to be watching James's run.

And yes, I would like to see how he does with non-softball FJ's. I suspect he would still do pretty well on them.

Coryat: 48,400
54 R/0 W
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: proof

Speaking of records, has there ever been a combined Coryat higher than $49,000 (since today's $50,000 double-counts a $1,000 clue) in regular play?

I find it interesting that James has nearly doubled Ken Jennings's 7-day money total despite having a lower average Coryat and fewer correct responses. He is a living testament to the proposition that most of the game comes down to just four clues.

Really? The best? I haven't analyzed the Coryats or anything, but just from watching my impression is his depth of knowledge isn't on the same tier as Ken's and Brad's.
