THE BIG REVEAL - CATEGORY 13

13. AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT - Pick a president from our list who shares at least one name with one of the following. (Note: The name doesn't have to occupy the same position. E.g. the writer Henry James shares at least one name with William Henry Harrison, James Madison, and James Monroe.)
  1. One of the Beatles
  2. A Saturday Night Live Cast Member (Repertory players only, please. "Featured" players and guest hosts and such need not apply.)
  3. Someone who has been named People magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive"
This was the shortest list of questions, but it had the greatest number of possible answers. Even with that, contestants mostly stayed away from the Beatles. The two who didn't scored singletons.

B. William Henry Harrison - works with John William "Will" Ferrell, William Edward "Billy" Crystal, William James "Bill" Murray, William "Bill" Hader
(3)
barandall800 (times a GROUNDHOG of 2 = 6 points)
DadofTwins
goforthetie

Goforthetie scores his second 3-pointer.

B. Andrew Jackson - works with David Andrew "Andy" Samberg and Victoria Jackson (3)
ayeembored (times a GROUNDHOG of 5 = 15 points)
Peggles (times a GROUNDHOG of 2 = 6 points)
debramc

B. James Monroe - works with James Thomas "Jimmy" Fallon, Jr., James Adam "Jim" Belushi, William James "Bill" Murray, James "Jim" Breuer (2)
amorris525
jeff6286

C. William Henry Harrison - works with Harrison Ford (2)
gamawire
Woof

A. John Quincy Adams - works with John Lennon (1)
Rackme32

A. James Madison - works with James Paul McCartney (1)
Paucle

We learned this in a Daily Double in this game on January 6. (Search for "Paul" to find the clue.) I don't know if everyone forgot or thought using it would be the kind of cleverness that backfires or needed both Madison and Monroe for other categories.

B. Thomas Jefferson - works with Thomas Christopher "Chris" Parnell and James Thomas "Jimmy" Fallon, Jr. (1)
plasticene

Nice singleton. How'd you know that? :)

B. John Tyler - works with John William "Will" Ferrell, Michael John McKean, Joseph Charles John "Joe" Piscopo, and Michael John "Mike" Myers. Oh yeah. And John Belushi (1)
xxaaaxx

C. George Washington - works with George Clooney and Denzel Washington (1)
econgator (times a GROUNDHOG of 2 = 2 points)

C. John Tyler - works with Johnny Depp and John F. Kennedy, Jr. (1)
MarkBarrett (times a GROUNDHOG of 2 = 2 points)

C. TRICKY DICK (2)
Vanya

The GROUNDHOG got you.

SLICK WILLIE (1)
mitchparov

HONEST ABE (0)
Bamaman
cheezguyty

INCORRECT ANSWERS (8)
C. Martin Van Buren (maybe next year, Steve) - immaf

UNUSED ANSWERS
A. George Washington - works with George Harrison
A. John Adams - works with John Lennon
A. James Monroe - works with James Paul McCartney
A. William Henry Harrison - works with George Harrison
A. John Tyler - works with John Lennon
B. George Wahington - works with George Coe
B. John Adams - works with (see list for "John" above)
B. James Madison - works with (see list for "James" above)
B. John Quincy Adams - works with (see list for "John" above)
B. Martin Van Buren - works with Martin Short
C. John Adams - works with Johnny Depp and John F. Kennedy, Jr.
C. Thomas Jefferson - works with Tom Cruise
C. John Quincy Adams - works with Johnny Depp and John F. Kennedy, Jr.

George Washington or William Henry Harrison for George Harrison. John Adams or John Tyler for John Lennon. Just left on the table as too hot to touch.

Rackme32 73 (1+3+4+6+8+4+10+4+4+0+20+8+1)

A truly impressive performance by goforthetie. Only twice did he score more than 2 points. That was here and on Category 6 where he identified John Adams as Washington's veep. He got a zero for his HONEST ABE and another one for his TRICKY DICK. He scored six singletons.

What can we do but congratulate him and move to the Final Reveal and Awards Ceremony to see who took second and third?

FINAL REVEAL AND AWARDS CEREMONY - INTRODUCTION

As you remember, there's a BONUS available on Category 13. You were asked to identify the Beatle, SNL cast member, or Sexiest Man Alive that your answer referred to. If no one else used the same person, you got -3 points.

The BONUS was not offered to contestants who used HONEST ABE, SLICK WILLIE, or TRICKY DICK. That wasn't specified, but I think everyone assumed it. It's mostly a moot point. There are no Beatles, SNLers, or SMAs with a name involving Abraham, Lincoln, Richard, Milhous, or Nixon. There was an SNLer with the last name of Richards, but almost doesn't count.

That leaves SLICK WILLIE. Only one contestant, mitchparov, used this answer on Category 13. Arguably, mitchparov could have tried for the BONUS by naming someone with a William, a Jefferson, a Clinton, a Blythe, or maybe even a III. He didn't. Arguably, I should have told him he was entitled to do so. I didn't. I'll tell you why. Mitchparov got his entry in after the deadline. Yes, that's right. I bent the rules for him and promised to keep mum in exchange for half his prize money. But even with the bonus, he's not going to place. Half of nothin' is nothin'. So I'm leaving things the way they are.

Therefore, the BONUS has the potential to affect the outcome for the following three players:
  • currently in 2nd - Bamaman, 25 points
    currently in 3rd - xxaaaxx, 27 points
    currently in 4th - DadofTwins, 29 points
Bamaman's 2 points ahead of xxaaaxx who's 2 points ahead of DadofTwins. With a 3-point BONUS at stake, there could be some place-swapping. DadofTwins can't make it up to second, but he could get third. Bamaman is guaranteed a spot in the top 3, but we don't know if it will be second or third. And for xxaaaxx, second, third, and fourth are all in play.

Before we see how that pans out, let's take a moment to see how everyone else did with the BONUS. Among those not in contention for second or third, the following contestants earned the BONUS 3-point reduction:
  • goforthetie - Will Ferrell
    jeff6286 - Jim Breuer
    econgator - Denzel Washington
MarkBarrett - John F. Kennedy Jr.
    Paucle - James Paul McCartney
    barandall800 - Bill Hader
    amorris525 - Jimmy Fallon
    ayeembored - Victoria Jackson
    Rackme32 - John Lennon
Peggles and debramc both chose Andy Samberg. No BONUS for them.

Woof and gamawire both chose Harrison Ford. No BONUS for them.

And plasticene inexplicably chose James Madison as an SNL cast member. Hang on... let me check something. My mistake. Plasticene actually said C. Thomas Howell was a cast member. He wasn't. But as we've already seen, in a stroke of too-little, too-late good luck, Plasticene didn't get negged for Category 13. He was rescued by Thomas Christopher "Chris" Parnell and/or James Thomas "Jimmy" Fallon, Jr. So all plasticene loses is the BONUS.

What? I was absolutely sure that (years ago) Steve Martin had been named Sexiest Man -- I remember hearing him make a joke about how it ruined his life. "Nobody else will know that," I thought. And they didn't, because apparently it's not true!

This, right here, is why I will never succeed at Jeopardy. I know so many untrue things.
Teems with quiet fun.

2. ???? - Bamaman or xxaaaxx
1. goforthetie 15 (2+1+0+0+2+3+1+1+1+1+2+1+3+-3)

Using those place numbers, I will be assigning each of you a president based on historical rankings. If you placed, say, 12th in this TD, you will get the 12th-ranked president. The only question was, whose ranking should I use? The Wikipedia article on presidential rankings lists 17 polls, plus an aggregate. The earliest listed poll was in 1948. The most recent was in 2011.

I chose to use the poll conducted by The Times (that's "of London" if you're crass enough not to know) in 2008. I based this decision on three preferences:

1. I wanted the rankings to come from an entity that actually existed back when all 10 of our presidents were in office. The Times has been in publication since 1785. It was the only survey that fit this criterion.

2. I wanted the rankings to produce the greatest number of humorous coincidences between how the presidents were assigned and answers that were given in this TD.

3. I didn't want to decide what my first preference was until I'd found a set of rankings that matched the second.

There are 21 contestants in this TD, so I will assign The Times' top 21 presidents. Rackme32 will receive the 21st best president and we'll go up from there. Since there have been 43 presidents, each of you will receive a president who, on average, is above average.

PRESIDENTIAL RANKINGS 21 THROUGH 11

The following contestants finished at or below the halfway point. But you still get presidential assignments from the top half of the list. You're all winners to me. Here are your presidents.

21. Rackme32 - James Monroe (was it because of that Doctrine?)
20. ayeembored - George H. W. Bush (that was the dad)
19. debramc - Grover Cleveland
18. immaf - Ulysses S. Grant
17. amorris525 - William McKinley
16. barandall800 - John Quincy Adams (hope he didn't read your comment)
15. plasticene - James Madison (but he won't take his orders from you)
14. Peggles - Andrew Jackson (you know the guy. Lived in that house in Nashville)
13. cheezguyty - John Adams (at least you know who he is)
12. Paucle - Lyndon B. Johnson (close one! You almost got cheezguyty's guy)
11. gamawire - John F. Kennedy

Remember, we don't do politics on this board. So please keep your whining cheerful and non-partisan.

PRESIDENTIAL RANKINGS 10 THROUGH 5

Now we enter the Top 10 US presidents of all time. If only gamawire had turned in his entry sooner, he'd be on this list and MarkBarrett would be on the previous one.

For contestants finishing 10th through 5th, your presidents are:

10. MarkBarrett - Woodrow Wilson
9. Woof - James K. Polk
8. mitchparov - Ronald Reagan
7. econgator - Harry S. Truman
6. Vanya - Dwight D. Eisenhower
5. jeff6286 - Theodore Roosevelt

Good show, guys. Congratulations.

FOURTH PLACE

And now it's time to sort out the order for Bamaman, xxaaaxx, and DadofTwins. They had 25, 27, and 29 points respectively.

Did DadofTwins get the BONUS? He chose "B. William Henry Harrison". Which SNL cast member did he choose? Bill Murray. No one else used Bill. DadofTwins gets the BONUS.

Our revised rankings are now:
  • currently in 4th - xxaaaxx, 27 points
    currently in 3rd - DadofTwins, 26 points
    currently in 2nd - Bamaman, 25 points
But we still need to know whether xxaaaxx and/or Bamaman got the BONUS.

Did xxaaaxx? He chose "B. John Tyler". Which SNL cast member did he choose? He chose John Belushi. No one else used John. Xxaaaxx gets the BONUS.

Our revised rankings are now:
  • currently in 4th - DadofTwins, 26 points
    currently in 3rd - Bamaman, 25 points
    currently in 2nd - xxaaaxx, 24 points
That does it for DadofTwins, then. Let's give him his president.

DadofTwins, it is my pleasure to present to you, the fourth-place contestant, the president whose Monticello home you tried to give to James Madison. That's right. Thomas Jefferson. Treat him right. He knows where you live!

Now all we have to do is sort out whether Bamaman stays in third or uses the BONUS to leapfrog xxaaaxx back into second.

THIRD PLACE

Bamaman did not get the BONUS. Those of you who've been paying attention knew that already. He used HONEST ABE on the final category and was never in contention for the BONUS.

Congratulations to Bamaman on a fine showing and a THIRD PLACE finish.

Bamaman, it is my pleasure to present to you the third best president of all time, the man who spent more time as a sitting president president than any other, though he always stood tall... [voice=Michael Buffer]Frrrranklin Delano Roosevelt![/voice]

SECOND PLACE

It's time for the second place award. You know who you are. Come on up here.

Congratulations to xxaaaxx for a stellar performance and a well-earned SECOND PLACE trophy.

Xxaaaxx, I am pleased to present to you a president without whose help you'd be one podium lower. Here he is, the second best president of all time, the man who gave Bamaman a sheepish 5 in Round 2, the Father of His Country ... [voice=Alan Kalter]Georrrr-ge Washington![/voice]

FIRST PLACE

And now, the moment we've all been waiting for. Who takes first prize? That question kept us in suspense through fully two-thirds of the game, after which it became obvious what the answer was going to be.

This contestant stepped into first place by the end of Round 3. And he (she?) just stayed there. Econgator got the closest to unseating this colossus, staying just two points below for Rounds 5 and 6. But the first place contestant fended off that advance and began widening the gap.

Come on up here, winner!

Congratulations to goforthetie not only for a FIRST PLACE finish, but for truly dominating this TD!

Goforthetie, I am pleased to present to you a president who, like you, holds clear title to first place. Not only did The Times rank him number 1, half of the other 16 polls did as well. The eight that didn't put Abe first were divided equally between Washington and FDR for the number 1 spot, with six then giving the number 2 spot to this president. The remaining two ranked him third. So, a couple of threes, a few twos, and a bunch of ones. Sound familiar? Here you go. Have the bestest, tallest, most honestest president of all time ... [voice=Johnny Gilbert]Aaaaaaabraham LINcoln![/voice]

That was spectacular--thanks, opus! And thanks for letting me enter late--half the prize money when I'm assigned Reagan is... well, a lot of money.

Do you have easy access to how many players never had groundhog > 1? If it's easy, I'd love to know. If you have to do any work to find out, don't worry about it.

Thanks for the great TD opus! It's strange to have almost every decision break my way (including a very lucky last-minute switch from Lennon to Belushi for the bonus) and still not even sniff the lead  But what can I say, goforthetie crushed us all like bugs. Great performance!

Wow, that was so much fun. Congrats to the top finishers, especially goforthetie!

For the record, I DO know that Madison preceded Monroe. However, I remain unclear on which is the short one, which one lived at Montpelier, which one wrote the Federalist Papers, which one has a state capital named after him, which one has an African capital named after him...

Okay, I knew those last two. By the way, I happen to live in the city of Monrovia, California, which I don't believe is named after either the fourth or the fifth POTUS, whoever those guys were.

Oh, and C. Thomas Howell. I had recently come across some list of SNL cast members and was surprised to see Robert Downey, Jr., on there. There must have been a time in the 80s when those two occupied nearby real estate in my brain, so it was all too easy to get the wires crossed.

Great TD, Opus. Thanks for running it, and doing such a good job. I am not entirely dissatisfied with being proclaimed the James K. Polk of TD 145, but I must confess to not putting a lot of value into a ranking of Presidents that places Ronald Reagan in the top 10. :o No doubt that poll was conducted after Newscorp purchased the TImes (thankfully, still no p. 3 girl in it, though). Major congratulations to all the podiumites, especially the dominant performance of gftt.

I remember a couple years ago when, after a few months of middling success at TD, there was finally a game in which I was doing really quite well. I kept trailing this one fellow, though, who kept predicting that he would eventually sheep horribly and tumble out of the lead... but he never did. If memory serves, I think this counts as turnabout. ;) But well played to you, Bamaman, and the rest of the exemplary presidents. (Although, JFK, LBJ, and Wilson all in the top 12?!)

Thanks to Opus for a great concept and a chance to stretch the strategery muscles a little bit more than usual! Very fun.
