Why Is Wheel's Season Shorter than J's?

Post by This Is Kirk! » Wed Jun 05, 2019 4:35 pm

Perhaps this has been asked and answered, but does anyone know why Wheel ends their season earlier than J! does?

Because it doesn't have as many episodes in it, of course.
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

Because TPH broke the game.

I forget in which book or interview he took credit for it, but the answer is Alex Trebek himself, who complained that reruns were no fun for televised competitions and that they should be minimized as much as practicable. Hence, the switch from the standard 39 weeks to 46 weeks for the third season, a change made while Trebek was still the producer of the show (George Vosburgh came aboard in 1987).

Thanks, Alex! It's much appreciated.

Yes, very interesting.

My thought was it might have to do with WoF typically doing a remote shoot during their season and the additional logistics and money involved in that caused them to shorten the season.

Ha! It's too bad Wheel doesn't bring back winning contestants until they lose. I could see TPH going on quite a tear. All the articles on James Holzhauer would have made comparisons to "Bobby Peacock's similar run on Wheel of Fortune". (Unless they had to refer to "Wheel's current reigning champ who seems to have broken that game even more thoroughly than Holzhauer is breaking Jeopardy!")

Because Alex is more of a badass than Pat.

Not only is Wheel's season shorter, but they're in production for fewer tape days than J!. The reason is because they shoot 6 shows per tape day, not 5. This 6th show is placed in one of 5 various weeks called America's Game. This also includes team weeks, so occasionally there is an America's Game week where (e.g.) on a Wednesday show they will have teams playing, but every other day of the week is single players only.

This is generally true. A year before I was on, I was in the audience for the 4th-6th episodes of a taping session. The 4th and 5th aired on a Thursday and Friday, and the sixth didn't air until a month later.

However, I was on during a special sweepstakes, so they only taped five episodes per session that time.

Maybe because Alex doesn't have to commute from Maryland.

Part of me actually kind of wanted to get a chance at a no-letter solve. I knew Round 2 from just the apostrophe, but IT WASN'T MY TURN.

However, I can take consolation in three things:

1.) Screw it, I won anyway.

2.) I think half the studio knew what it was before any letters were up. Even my friend who hates game shows but watched my episode anyway knew it.

3.) I think if I did solve with no letters, they would've stopped tape for like 2 hours just to make sure I wasn't cheating.
