"Criss-cross applesauce" has to be right up there for one of the best LOL funny responses in J! history.

I thought Exponents had been extinct since 2004.

I haven't thought about completing the square in years. I remember it being a minor topic in Algebra and was not fully confident in my answer.

I think I stronger case for an incorrect ruling was the "Proverbially, you go "under" it when you head into surgery" clue. An alternative spelling of anesthesia is anaesthesia (with a silent a), which definitely fits the clue and has a silent letter. I'm not sure about the 'proverbially' part, but I was expecting a reversal on that one at the break.

Re: Monday, June 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
An excellent point about anaesthesia..."Under the knife" is an idiom, a familiar phrase. I can't think of a proverb that uses it. But sometimes "proverbially" means, per Google, "well known, especially so as to be stereotypical." Under anaesthetic is certainly familiar, but it's also literal...maybe some metaphor or synecdoche is required to make it proverbial.alietr wrote: ↑Tue Jun 25, 2019 9:16 am I think I stronger case for an incorrect ruling was the "Proverbially, you go "under" it when you head into surgery" clue. Or maybe not. I think if your point had occurred to anyone, they would have accepted it.
Re: Monday, June 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
That was also my guess.
I remember one of my elementary school teachers using the term "criss-cross applesauce" for sitting with your legs crossed. I've also heard "Indian style".
Also, I take back what I said earlier. I know the phrase "lotus position", but didn't know what it actually was. There I go again with my habit of only half-knowing things.

It was definitely "Indian style" when I was a kid. I assume that was deemed not politically correct at some point.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Tue Jun 25, 2019 10:43 am I remember one of my elementary school teachers using the term "criss-cross applesauce" for sitting with your legs crossed. Re: Monday, June 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Lotus position is not the same as Indian style. Indian style leaves the heels underneath the legs/knees. Lotus brings the heels to rest on top. It's much more difficult. I was never able to do it.This Is Kirk! wrote: ↑Tue Jun 25, 2019 12:50 pmIt was definitely "Indian style" when I was a kid. Re: Monday, June 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Anesthesia was my immediate guess. I only got as far as thinking, "But we don't spell it with a silent letter over here" when Mrs Penguin said "under the knife" and I knew she was right. I agree there's a good (if debatable) case to be made for a reversal.alietr wrote: ↑Tue Jun 25, 2019 9:16 am I think I stronger case for an incorrect ruling was the "Proverbially, you go "under" it when you head into surgery" clue. Re: Monday, June 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Which unfortunately means 3x³ + 7y² - 4z doesn't fit the pattern and is not quadratic. It may not be clear from the general form, but a, b, and c must be numbers rather than variables and there can only be one variable in the equation. In the first term, that variable must be raised to the 2nd power (ax²). In the second term it must be raised to the first, which doesn't get notated (bx). And in the third term, the variable is not present or, if you prefer, is raised to the 0th power (c). So 3x³ + 7y² - 4z fails to be quadratic by having three variables and raising each term to the wrong power. Contrast that with e.g. 4x² + 9x + 2 which is quadratic.Volante wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2019 10:40 pm I'm guessing my answer of polynomial for quadratic would have been BMSed? I'm doubting it would have been accepted outright since it got used later. I also checked the archive for the wording and it looks like that clue got eaten...
And because I had to look it up...
ax2 + bx + c = 0 is the general form of this type of equation
Query to alietr: Does our BBcode not support superscript and subscript or am I just doing it wrong? I thought [sup]3[/sup] would give me a superscript 3 but no dice.
EDIT: Exponents added thanks to alietr's tutorial.

These are high school students. I am a lot older than Justin. I have never heard the term exponent used to indicate someone who is a proponent. I can also read a dictionary and I did look it up before I posted. It was a terrible clue. In fact it stunk and he was screwed.

Poll request: "I can do lotus position."
I was saddened to note that the actor Benedict Cumberbatch in portraying an alleged master of the mystic arts did not attempt to train himself to do lotus position for the shot that required it in Avengers: Infinity War.

Re: Monday, June 24, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Yes, the other meaning of "exponent" is a bit of a curve ball for a high schooler. I'm familiar with the usage and suspect I was already familiar with it in high school, but I wouldn't have expected my classmates in A.P. English to know it. HOWEVER the 3 in 8³ should be IMMEDIATELY identifiable as an exponent to anyone in college prep classes. To call it a "root", which is essentially the opposite of an exponent, betrays either a lack of basic high school knowledge or shows that we can all say silly things that we know are wrong when the lights are shining and the clock is ticking.
Either way, Justin was fairly beat by a clue that he had (or should have had) enough information to get SOLELY FROM HIS KNOWLEDGE OF THE MATH TERM. He didn't need to know the other meaning at all. He just had to identify the 3 as an exponent and hope that word had the other meaning mentioned in the clue. If Justin had said, "What is a power?" or "What is a cube?" I'd have more sympathy for the view that he got screwed.

No superscript for you!opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Tue Jun 25, 2019 3:00 pm Query to alietr: Does our BBcode not support superscript and subscript or am I just doing it wrong? I thought [sup]3[/sup] would give me a superscript 3 but no dice.
I think it would have to be added separately and that would involve effort on my part. You can, however, use ALT-0178 for ^2 and ALT-0179 for ^3. Like this: ² and ³.

Yeah, that's too bad. He's so lanky that learning the position shouldn't be too much of a stretch (ha ha).Robert K S wrote: ↑Tue Jun 25, 2019 3:14 pmPoll request: "I can do lotus position."

Okay, maybe not an outright BMS but probably a pause from Alex before running out of time and getting ruled wrong.opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Tue Jun 25, 2019 3:00 pmWhich unfortunately means 3x^3 + 7y^2 - 4z doesn't fit the pattern and is not quadratic. The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Thanks for the reminder on alt codes. This feels like something I've learned before and forgotten. Maybe it'll stick this time.
