Re: Friday, June 28, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I did a little checking to see if Avalon might sneak in by the back door as an alternative correct response. No luck. Avalon doesn't get mentioned in "Lancelot, the Knight of the Cart", which was written some time between 1177 and 1181. Avalon DOES appear in an earlier story (1170) by Chrétien de Troyes, "Erec and Enide". And even earlier than that, Avalon receives its first known mention in Geoffrey of Monmouth's "History of the Kings of Britain" (1136).
I considered Avalon for this clue but only after Camelot had immediately leapt to mind. Camelot seemed like the "obvious" response, so I felt that the clue would be a wicked curveball if the response were actually something else. This feeling may be influenced by the fact that I thought of Camelot first. But I feel it strongly nonetheless. I think "Camelot" would be the very definition of negbait if "Avalon" was what they wanted. This could be resolved easily enough by changing the word "locale" to "island". (And changing "Chrétien de Troyes" to "Geoffrey of Monmouth" and "Lancelot, the Knight of the Cart" to "The History of the Kings of Britain" if we want the clue to be accurate.)
I'm curious if there's anyone who considered both possibilities and went with Avalon. If so, what was your reasoning? Anyone else, like me, consider both and go/stick with Camelot? If so, which did you think of first?
I assume the Barrett Poll* will include a box for those who guessed Avalon.
* And doesn't THAT sound distinguished? George Gallup, eat your heart out.

My husband and I both immediately thought Camelot. But after a couple seconds I thought, "ooh, it couldn't be Avalon, could it?" On the heels of the previous FJ's in this tournament, we figured Camelot was what they were looking for. Might've been more of a crapshoot in regular play.

I pretty much went through the same process as you. Immediately thought of Camelot, then thought it might be too obvious and maybe the answer was Avalon. After reconsidering, thought it was unlikely the teen tournament would go with the less obvious choice, especially given how easy all the FJs have been, and settled in maybe a bit uneasily with Camelot.opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Sat Jun 29, 2019 12:40 pm

Avalon was my first and only thought. If Camelot had occurred to me I would have picked it as being more obvious for teens.
Re: Friday, June 28, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I love how I managed to consider just about everything BUT Camelot in my brainstorm.
What is "can't see the forest for the trees"?

Avalon is important to Arthur's story, but did Lancelot have anything to do with it? I'm surprised so many gave Avalon such consideration.

Well, if the first thing you connect to after Lancelot is King Arthur... I imagine if I instead went to 'Knights of the Round Table' things might have turned out differently.
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

Re: Friday, June 28, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I actually thought "Round Table", but was uncomfortable with it being a locale and went to the next brain cell to get to Camelot.
I'm glad Avi won outright without it being due to a mistake by the others. Lucas did cost himself a little cash by popping guesses like Galileo at the end, but it was the right thing to try to get a sniff of a prayer. He wasn't playing with house money because he was in range of being over the 25K minimum without the misses.
I thought the writers had a clever ploy on the song lyrics by going to ancient baby boomer nursery rhymes, but it only paid off on Clementine. Overall the clues were far too easy. I don't recall the last one with the three fantastic girls being such a gimme-fest.
Avi's little manifesto was quite impressive and a great rebuttal to those who pooh pooh the acquisition of trivia knowledge, and sadly, learning in general. I am assuming they all know of Alex's cancer treatment and Avi's reaction when AT read his shoutout as he was sick (instead of he rocks) was real panic and a quick recovery.
I'm assuming our players from Monday until the end of the season have seen a few episodes of James' run and are likely relieved that he isn't in the pool for their appearance. They probably haven't seen quite enough to know about the paradigm shift, but we may see some swinging. We've already seen the Forrest bouncing but I doubt we'll see a lot of bottom row only strategy to open games.

Re: Friday, June 28, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
James began play with #1 airing on April 4th. OntarioQuizzer shared that the last taping of the season was April 6th, so only the players who air the last week of the season July 22-26 saw James play on TV. If any of those players took in a taping during late February or March it's up to them to share that fact. If any of the players came to L.A. early to do sightseeing stuff before the 6th and did not watch J! from their guest rooms then they would be in the dark.hbomb1947 wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2019 12:42 amNo they haven't.twelvefootboy wrote: ↑Sun Jun 30, 2019 12:23 am I'm assuming our players from Monday until the end of the season have seen a few episodes of James' run . . .
No matter whether the players saw James or not, the first two games of $43K+ & $38K+ did not tell the full story of what was to come so I don't expect any copycatting going on these upcoming four weeks.
What is wide open to perhaps happen is further change on the tracker for another champ to do enough to earn a spot on page one. And it is possible for it to happen on Monday.

Yep. That gets me: Did you mean: "Dreadful Sorry Clementine" followed by 302 results. If I click on the "Dreadful Sorry Clementine" I get 12,800 results. What's your reason for believing the far less common version is the correct one?
