Re: Monday, September 23, 2019 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Jason hit DD1 leading 5800 to 200 and minus 1000. The wager of 2800 was on the conservative side with that situation even if CLOCKS in the $1000 box looked iffy. An all-in bet there and it could have been easier to bet even more than $5000 on DD2 as the lead of 15400 to 1200 and minus 600 was a place to make sure nothing bad could happen on DD3.
As the game went Jason was superior on all aspects and his fifth taping day was off to a good start.
There were 7 categories left unfinished as that is unusual no matter how scattershot the clue selecting gets.
The FJ! clue had me finish before the music began and with a lot more confidence than Jason seemed to have for his correct response. My dot-to-dot of Chagall to Russia to the right musical had everything fitting with no detours.
The Archive backs up the dots:
#7632, aired 2017-11-14 ART $800: His childhood in Vitebsk influenced his work, which often includes fiddlers on roofs
#7159, aired 2015-10-29 ART $600: Marc Chagall painted several versions of this type of musician hovering above roofs
#6415, aired 2012-07-06 IF IT AIN'T BAROQUE... $400: A 1912 work by Marc Chagall is titled after this musician found in the title of a Broadway show
#4457, aired 2004-01-13 THE ART WORLD $400: "The Fiddler" by Marc Chagall is portrayed as a fiddler on one of these -- L'Chaim!
#3563, aired 2000-02-16 ARTISTS $1,400 (Daily Double): His work, seen here, was influenced by his Jewish upbringing in Russia: ("The Fiddler")
It took three weeks and I'm finally happy to check off the silly box of getting a Monday FJ! clue right. Next up is protecting my success on W/Th/F FJ! clues as long as possible for each day.
Next on the money chart for Jason is Austin Rogers who won $486,000 between regular play, the TOC and All-Stars

I had no idea what to even guess for FJ, so just picked a random show from that time period, and was wrong. This highlighted a clear gap in my knowledge...

Trey here. My guesses were Fiddler, Caberet or La Cage aux Folles. Since I was out of the running at that point, I decided to go with my college mascot

For the rapper clue $ or no $? I went S for starters and can change it if that is the better option. It would have been a NHOH for me except that I sometimes peek in at 3:00 to catch the TMZ Live headlines and he of course was a hot topic for more than a day.

Surprised myself by running Health & Medicine. Also ran the Word category and was 4/4 on Clocks.
Didn't think I would do that badly on the albums: knew $1,000 was a Beatles album but couldn't decide which one; picked the wrong 20 on Adele; NHO the two Fleetwood Mac songs named; and recognized both songs as Alanis Morrissette but couldn't name any of her albums in time (although I recognized Jagged Little Pill after the reveal).
I had only Tallahassee on the "alphabetically last" DD. I just hit a brick wall on any other T ones. Why am I always so terrible at alphabetical categories?
Lately DJ! has been kicking my ass. I was 7R 1W.
No guess on FJ! I know Fiddler on the Roof is a musical with a Russian theme, and that Chagall was Russian. The pieces were all in my brain, but as usual, they just completely evaporated and I just stared at the screen in stony silence.

I came up with the right response for this FJ! only after pausing the DVR for about a minute and a half.

The Pavlov for Chagall for me is "Russian Jewish painter". What musical could be about Russian Jews? Fiddler is the most likely candidate.
Not many people can say they've lost four times on Jeopardy!.

Same here.
Too bad that nobody even guessed on the “sgt Pepper” clue. Given the precedent from a few years ago I wonder if they would have required the complete title.

I thought the same thing when I saw the news about Andre Emmett today. I was still in school when he played for Tech. Both of them are two of our all time greats.CasketRomance wrote: ↑Mon Sep 23, 2019 8:47 pmodd thing is...your episode aired today and within the last 2 days two former texas tech raiders died....ej holub died on sunday and andre emmett died today...pretty eerie coincidenceTravlRaider wrote: ↑Mon Sep 23, 2019 2:10 pmTrey here. I think I've gotten this right in the other order (like, "What artist's work inspired the title of Fiddler on the Roof?") at pub quiz. I wasn't missing this.

The Jeopardy! "Think" music is specially formulated to block information in your head. Try it on mute and see if you get better results.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Sep 23, 2019 10:00 pmAnd if I know all of this, then why did it completely fall out of my head the second the music started?

I had zero idea on any of the albums... Only one I've heard (to my knowledge and not counting hit singles that happened to play on a radio within earshot somewhere) is Sgt. Pepper, but those titles rang no bells with me at all. Maybe with 3 minutes to think about it, I *might* have pulled Jagged Little Pill on a good day...TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Mon Sep 23, 2019 7:30 pm ... On FJ!, I had no idea where Chagall was based nor that he painted fiddlers on roofs (for what reason? I dunno), so no lead to Fiddler there for me even though I know that's the time period for it.
Went to our friend Google and found the painting... Never seen it before, and don't want to EVER see it again! Frickin' UGLY!

Hope Jason will break $500K tomorrow.
