Not always, though usually, I only look at the contestant line-up a day at a time.

No responses Wednesday or Thursday. Wednesday I completely froze. Thursday I at least have the excuse that I thought they were looking for a ship and couldn't think of one that remotely fit the clue.
Neil Simon for Friday.
I usually don't look at Contestant Zone, but for some reason I did this week around Tuesday.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?

No guess Wednesday

Ah yes, the other Carson McCullers novel. I should add that to the flashcards, but I've been remiss in reviewing them for the last week. I think it showed up in one of Ed Toutant's games, if I remember correctly.

I'd add Carson McCullers to this list. Although (according to the j-archive) her last work Clock without Hands hasn't been asked about, her other three novels and a short story collection all have been.

The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter (1940)
Reflections in a Golden Eye (1941)
The Member of the Wedding (1946)
The Ballad of the Sad Cafe (1951) [short story collection]
Clock Without Hands (1961)

-M
Clock without Hands still hasn't been mentioned in a clue, 6 years after I first posted this.

Independence on Monday. Instagets for Wild Bill Hickok, Paul Simon (I remember that kerfuffle well, and have seen Ladysmith Black Mambazo multiple times, including once with Richard Thompson opening), and (British) East India Company. Ended up with a WECIB for Albee after ruling out the usual suspects (aka the other American playwrights I can name :?) as too old or too young.

Knew Clara Schumann right away, but never liked Pac-Man (Tempest uber alles!) and NHO McCullers.

I would guess that's because even people who know McCullers' work have never heard of it.
Here's an interesting bit - Ballad of the Sad Cafe was adapted into a play in 1963...by Edward Albee.
Also, all the books above - except Clock Without Hands - have been made into movies, always a salient fact for J!

I was stuck on Custer, trying to figure out what "broke me on the last hand" meant, and the best I could do was an equestrian interpretation (that I couldn't make sense of, either). But I'm not sad about my first 4/5 week of the season.

I did think about ships first on Thursday, but it was clearly too late for the Golden Hind, and why would it be the Mayflower?

I remember the Paul Simon thing well. I guess I'm also the right age to know Pac-Man but I was never much into video games. I do remember that they all had names, which I thought at the time was silly, but who is silly now?

I missed with Albee in recent FJ memory but was very confident he was right this time. He was also a friend of the show, once reciting a category of clues.

I only ever go to the web site for tests and test info.
I'm smart and I want respect.

First box of shame since the 2017 ToC.

At least I knew Clyde.
Never been on J!, but once won a knockoff version that aired on local access TV.

Oof. I'm 11/25 so far this season.
I always check the Contestant Zone and check the LL site to see if any of them are LLamas.

My initial reaction of the Dutch company of similar origin saved me from hunting for various ships, and kept me from the box of shame. The rest of the week I was pretty clueless, only able to make reasonable guesses M-W, and no guess at all for F.
