As an archivist I'm glad the JUST GIVE US THE CANDY! category was not images while as a viewer I wanted to see the yummy treats. Well, different adjective for yucky things at the $1000 clue.

In case it's up for discussion later:

HALLOWEEN TRADITIONS $200: A Celtic tradition of using hollowed-out turnips with candles inside led to these distinctive & larger Halloween gourds

Kris served up a rebound to Steve and I can already imagine Hammer ready to cry negbait on it.

Surprise stumper of the day was no one knowing the pen name for Charles Dodgson.

Before the FJ! round there was another ToC teaser and of course the theme was James and the 14 other players. Alex: If you're going to beat him, you had better bring your A game. James's QF opponents got a close-up of determination.

The FJ! clue was one where I got it first off the year and second off the name being familiar enough from prior usage:

Writers showing some mercy to everybody for the first episode of the week. After all, how many things could you "open" and then have a woman "cross it in a carriage" in 1883?

Yeah. I felt pretty good about it while totally blowing past the Roebling clue. John and Washington Roebling being the architects is definitely a Thing That Comes Up and I assume Emily was John’s wife and Washington’s mom. Lots of paths to victory here.

And great to know he has no hard feelings for the legal problems J! had for DEBT, although the changes actually improved said game show.

He was also in the audience in Dec. 1986 (before the audience was shown on-camera regularly, so whether or not you believe Alex's Final Jeopardy remark about it is up to you) as well:

I was going to look up the name of the Norse tree this morning and didn't get around to it. Cost = $2000.

NHO "Kettlebell". Poll request?

20th Century for $1200 absolutely reeked of negbait for Dada. Even after the two negs I was like "Bwuh? That's totally Dada! How is it not? What else could it even BE?!"

Did anyone else find the Crossword Clues extremely tough? I got only $400 and have NHO the other four.

====

Ran Candy.

3/5 in Music. NHO Lizzo. "Running on Empty" rang a bell but I've never matched it to a singer before.

Goodall was my only get in Time 100.

2.0 could be a C, D, or F for all I know. That seemed tricky for the top box.

DJ! ate my lunch with only 6 right and 2 wrong.

19th century + crossing in a carriage? Brooklyn Bridge it is.

Lach Trash: cartilage, Lewis Carroll

Wink was also in the audience of last week's Wheel episodes, apparently.

No negbait about it. The ruling was 100% wrong. Pumpkin was the only correct response and should have been accepted. So not only did Kris lose money for responding correctly, his opponent gained money for responding incorrectly. I was gobsmacked. Jack-o-lantern can't be the correct response since those can be made out of pumpkins OR turnips. The clue is about how they stopped using turnips and started using these other things to make jack-o-lanterns.

EDIT: On further research, it's possible that "jack-o-lantern" only refers to the pumpkin version. So Steve's response is potentially acceptable. But Kris' response is unquestionably correct, and his came first.

Diana's DJ DD summarizes several things that drive me bonkers while watching the show.

1, finds a 2nd row DD, an tremendous opportunity, and wagers $1200.
2, doesn't give any thought at all of her answer, answers as though she's still racing the other contestants. Double-checking DD's is something that some of the top players have done, and casual viewers think they are simply grandstanding.
3, then, with 11 clues and 1 DD left, goes to the one box where the other DD isn't going to be found.

She simply didn't understand how to win the game, and it cost her.

So where have all those boardies gone that claimed James had totally changed how the game was going to be played? :D :D :D

Considering it was a top-box triple stumper, I would say at least three other people didn't know "kettlebell" either.

So Kris holds back $1k for no good reason, which not only costs him 2nd place because of Diana's similarly poor wager, but wasn't even enough to win the game on a single get!? *sigh* The TOC can't get here fast enough.

Instaget FJ. Shocking, I know.

I KNEW that one day, if I lived long enough, it would come in handy to know the little factoid that the proper name for the statue known as "Winged Victory" is "Nike of Samothrace." And today it was my only LT of the whole game.

Agreed. Worst clue I’ve seen this season if they were going strictly for jack-o-lantern.
