No sports category though Alex did use the chat time with Ryan to bring up the infamous football category fail. Ryan's comeback was that he made $20,000 that day. ($22,799 to be exact.)

Nice run for Steven in Shakespeare and getting the applause even though it was out of order and included a rebound. I don't have to tell you who had the neg. :)

Francois on DD3 did 24300+8000 with Steven at 9600 and Ryan at 2000 on clue 20. It all worked out fine, but the idea is just to make it to the semis. Instead Francois left the QF round as W1.

For the FJ! clue I matched the semifinalists with correct spelling while Ryan getting bounced had Kahn like actress Madeline. Tough break for Ryan blowing a DD that should have been friendly. Ryan's Coryat of 9400 was enough to make semis while the big DD wager sunk his chances. Ryan went out in style with a bunch of misses, singing a correct response, trying to make a quick comeback, taking it all in stride and standing out as always as a little different than the typical contestant.

Looking to the semis:

W1 - Francois 34300
W2 - James 30635
W3 - Emma 23800
W4 - Dhruv 20001
W5 - Gilbert 16801

WC1 - Steven 18400
WC2 - Kyle 16800
WC3 - Lindsey 14000
WC4 - Rachel 13601

What should happen is James, Emma and Francois in separate semis. Emma, Rachel and Lindsey in separate games.

I would make it:
Emma vs. Dhruv vs. Gilbert
James vs. Steven vs. Rachel
Francois vs. Lindsey vs. Kyle

What I expect is:
Gilbert vs. Steven vs. Lindsey
Francois vs. Emma vs. Dhruv
James vs. Kyle vs Rachel

The powers will find some way to have one semifinal over-packed and another one guaranteeing a finalist that is probably in the #6-9 ranking of remaining players. Somehow there will be an uproar when seeing the pairings as something will not pass the smell test.

Oh well, right book, wrong character. And Steven doesn't play it safe, and gets rewarded with a wild card.

I think it's much more likely that Emma and Lindsey's positions are switched, to be honest. I think TPTB want to have a James-Emma rematch and won't give Emma as difficult of a semifinal.

Never heard that name before. I guessed Gunga Din, so all I can claim is right author.

Probably not wrong to expect to see James in the third semifinal. Seems likely they'll put him into the Wednesday slot for whatever reason they put him into the Wednesday slot for the QFs. Perhaps Wednesdays are their biggest viewership nights (although I would have thought it would be Thursdays).

I could be wrong, but I think this is the first time that both a Teachers Tournament winner and a College Champion have each won their QF games in the same ToC (with a footnote that Lilly Chin and Jason Sterlacci both advanced from the same QF game in 2017). Does one of the resident statisticians/fact-checkers care to confirm?

It might have to do with local preemptions. In Boston, we typically get J! booted from Friday at 7:30 PM to to 2:35 AM on Saturday because of a weekly Patriots show. For the ToC, they also show J! on a sister station at the regular time instead of Big Bang Theory syndication.

Nationally, Monday and Thursday nights are likely to have local affiliates preempt for football - on Mondays when the Patriots play, our ABC affiliate cancels their local newsmagazine and moves the entire primetime lineup to their sister station so they can simulcast ESPN. Friday nights, people go out. So, I'm guessing that in the fall/winter, Tuesday and Wednesday might be the best days for ratings, and the days least likely to be preempted.

Putting James on Wednesday as the "semifinal finale" seems like a good idea.

On the topic of preemptions, does anyone know the schedule for hearings, testimony and such for next week? I saw somewhere that perhaps Wednesday and Friday and of course that makes me dread coverage in the 9:30 CT range in the morning.

REVELATIONS $800: Documents declassified in 2017 reveal Dallas' FBI office got a death threat against this man Nov. 23, 1963; he died on the 24th

Steven got caught on this one and I thought it would have been half funny/half cruel if Alex has asked, "Which one?" I would have been on the floor if Ryan had then jumped in with "Robert." No way Francois was falling for this clue.

Wasn’t there a Jungle Book FJ in another recent tournament? I can’t remember if it was the All-Star games or the last ToC. The writers seem to like their Jungle Book.

Welp...that was...a Ryan Fenster game, yesiree. Sheesh. Clearly didn't learn anything about staying clam with the year of prep...yet he still might've pulled out a WC if he had gotten that DD right.

I don't remember Francois from his original run, but great performance. That was as low-key a 30k game as as you can get. Might be a sneaky dark horse for the title, depending on the draw.

Instaget FJ. Bring on the semifinals.

Coryat 37400
42 R
2 W
DD 3/3
FJ :(

My best DJ! round in a while, but so far in this TOC, I have yet to put a whole solid game together including the FJ.

Congrats to François on a convincing victory and making it look easy to boot!

I thought for sure that the Shakespeare category would have a DD. I can't say for sure if Ryan wanted to uncover the DD early or build up money, but hunting in a category called "Miscellany" is not the way to find it.

Instant get FJ. It reminded me of the one from the second round of the UToC where Baloo was the correct response. I don't know what the writers are thinking with these reasonably challenging boards with easy FJ clues.

Francois was most impressive. If he can compete on the buzzer then I see no reason why he can't win it all. Normally I would expect to see 2 of the 3 most impressive quarterfinalists in the same semifinal game, but I have to agree that this year will be an exception.

Coryat $31,000 (42R, 2W)
DD 3/3
FJ
LT: Junior Achievement (Davy Crockett DD)

Disappointed that Ryan didn’t advance, but Francois put on an absolute clinic.

What do people think of his wager on the final DD? It seemed high to me given his position at the time, even given that it was in the $800 row. Thought he was introducing some unnecessary risk.

I thought Francois was capable of being a second week player after he won his Teacher Tourney, but he still blew me away today. I am hoping beyond hope that Francois, Emma and James are split up next week...those three were on a different level this week and that would be an awesome finals to watch.

Glad to see Steven advance, but I'm disappointed Ryan missed that DD and can't join them. He's just so damn entertaining. Congrats and best of luck to everyone playing next week.

Correct, this is the first such occurrence. Interestingly enough, Francois is only the third Teacher champ to advance in eight tries (Colby & Jason are the others of course).
