Outside of the Jeopardy canon, but worth knowing about, children's author Tomie dePaola has passed away at the age of 85. His most famous creation is probably Strega Nona, "a kindly 'grandma witch,'...who helps her fellow Calabrian townspeople with magic and an eternally full pasta pot."

Record-setting placekicker Tom Dempsey of the New Orleans Saints has died of complications from the COVID-19 virus. Dempsey has not appeared in a J! clue since 2010, but he made six appearances prior to that date—and with good reason. He held the NFL record for longest successful field goal try for 44 years.

From CBS Sports:
Dempsey was born without toes on his right foot and fingers on his right hand, but was still able to turn in a strong kicking career with the Saints after signing on with the club in 1969 as an undrafted free agent. Because of that disability, he wore a flat shoe that he kicked with, which is currently on display in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. During his rookie season, Dempsey hit a record-setting 63-yard field goal, which was the longest made field goal in NFL history until Matt Prater nailed a 64-yarder in 2013.

Longtime Detroit Tigers right-fielder Al Kaline died today at age 85.
https://www.freep.com/story/sports/mlb/ ... 505371001/

Kaline played 22 seasons (1953-74) in the majors, all with the Tigers, and was named an all-star 18 times. The Tigers won a World Series in 1968, and Kaline won the AL batting title in 1955. He was elected to Cooperstown in 1980 in his first year of eligibility. He had 3007 hits (one of 32 to hit the 3000-hit threshold, one of ten to do that all for one club) and 399 homers in his career.

Mort Drucker, best known for his 55-year career of drawing caricatures of TV and film in Mad magazine, died Wednesday at the age of 91. Drucker began drawing for Mad in 1956 and over six decades became known for depicting a slew of famous faces from film, television, and politics. He also drew countless magazine illustrations, album covers, ads, coloring books, and movie posters, including George Lucas’s American Graffiti.

This obit in the New York Post has a couple of nice anecdotes related to Drucker's work:

Tony-winning character actor Brian Dennehy has died at the age of 81. According to the family, his death was not related to the coronavirus. Dennehy was widely known as a film actor who appeared in a string of hits in the 1980s, including 10, Cocoon, First Blood, Tommy Boy, Silverado, F/X, Legal Eagles, Best Seller, and Presumed Innocent.

In 1999, Dennehy won a Tony Award for his performance as Willy Loman in the Broadway revival of Death of a Salesman. A few years later, he won his second Tony for his turn as James Tyrone in a revival of Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Variety called Dennehy "perhaps the foremost living interpreter of O'Neill's works."

Dennehy also received five Emmy nominations in 1990 for roles in TV movies and miniseries, including his performance as serial killer John Wayne Gacy in To Catch a Killer.
