The Duke and Duchess of Sussex (Prince Harry and Meghan Markle) are to step back from senior roles in the royal family and work towards financial self-sufficiency after a period marked by open warfare with the media over claimed intrusion and bullying.

One day later, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wax figures have been removed from Madame Tussaud's royal family display. Madame Tussaud's said the couple’s figures at the London wax museum will be moved to mimic their “progressive new role within the Royal institution.”

I would bet money this shows up on Jeopardy within 3-4 months with the correct response being "What is Madame Tussaud's?" The word "wax" is in the clue.

Henry was twice nominated for Academy Awards, for writing The Graduate and for co-directing Heaven Can Wait (with Warren Beatty). He co-created the TV show Get Smart with Mel Brooks. He was also the first person to host Saturday Night Live five times (and also the first person to host 10 times). Later in life, he guest-starred as Liz Lemon's father Dick Lemon on 30 Rock.
Henry was also the writer who gave us "Plastics," the one-word line that stumped FJ contestants (and most of us on the J! board) on 11-27-19. This line did not appear in the Charles Webb novel on which Henry's screenplay for The Graduate was based.

This morning's announcement of nominations for the 92nd Academy Awards created a few milestones. This is an incomplete list, as I'm still processing the nominations. Here's a partial rundown:

For the first time, a streaming service led all studios in Academy Award nominations. With such films as The Irishman, Marriage Story, and The Two Popes, Netflix led the way with 24 Oscar nominations for the 2019 year.

With The Irishman, Martin Scorsese earned his ninth nomination in the Best Director category, second only to William Wyler. Wyler was nominated for Best Director a record twelve times.

Parasite became the first South Korean film to be nominated in either the Best Picture or Best International Feature Film (a.k.a. Best Foreign Film) category. The film earned a total of seven nominations.

Joker has joined Black Panther as the only comic-book-inspired movies to be nominated for an Academy Award in the category of Best Picture. Joker is also the first comic book movie to earn the most nominations of any film in a given year.

Honeyland, a North Macedonian documentary about impoverished beekeepers in an isolated village, became the first film ever nominated for both Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature Film.

John Williams earned an unprecedented 52nd Oscar nomination for his score for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Williams has said that this will be his final Star Wars score.

I saw this one over on that site that begins with a "W": In Oman, Haitham bin Tariq Al Said is named the country's new ruler after his cousin, Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said, dies at the age of 79.

Regarding the Oscars, celebrity couple Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach are both nominated for screenwriting, but fortunately aren't competing against each other. Baumbach's Marriage Story was an original screenplay whereas Gerwig's Little Women was an adaptation.

When was the last time a celebrity couple both won Oscars in the same year in different categories?

Further regarding the Oscars, I believe this marks the first time that a U.S. president (current or former) has been nominated for an Oscar. Reagan's Kings Row was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1943, but not Reagan himself.

(A Reagan short film, Beyond the Line of Duty, also won an Oscar, but again, not one for the Gipper.)

American Factory is distributed by Obama's production company, but Oscars-dot-com lists the nominees as Steven Bognar, Julia Reichert and Jeff Reichert.

In sporting news, Major League Baseball has suspended Houston Astros manager AJ Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow for one year after a lengthy investigation into the team's use of technology to steal signs. The Astros were also fined $5 million and stripped of their first- and second-round draft picks in both 2020 and 2021. The $5 million fine is the maximum financial punishment that may be levied under the current major league constitution.

The allegations are that the Astros were using a center-field camera to pick up the opposing catcher's signs, which were then relayed to the bench. Players then alerted the hitter at the plate of an incoming off-speed pitch by banging on trashcans in the dugout.

It's also expected that the Boston Red Sox and manager Alex Cora will soon face severe punishment for their use of cameras to steal signs during their 2018 championship season. In 2017, the Red Sox were fined for using Apple Watches as part of a sign-stealing scheme.

I don't expect that J! will expect contestants to identify any of these individuals by name, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the phrase "stealing signs" pop up on the show either within a clue or as a correct response.

Read the story here:

https://www.cbssports.com/mlb/news/mlb- ... icks-lost/

UPDATE: As of 1/16/20, three different managers have been fired or stepped down from their clubs as a result of the two aforementioned sign-stealing scandals: AJ Hinch, Alex Cora, and Carlos Beltran.

Whoops. I was relying on a misinformative news headline. Thanks for the correction.

The LSU Tigers have won the 2020 College Football National Championship over the Clemson Tigers by the score of 42 - 25.

In the victory, LSU quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Joe Burrow became college football's most prolific scorer in one season in NCAA history with 65 total touchdowns, 60 of them passing, both records.

In today's game, he was 31 for 49, for 463 yards and 5 TDs passing. He also rushed for 58 yards and 1 TD.

LSU finished the season 15 - 0
