Trivia dorks (anyone like that here) will mourn losing this little nugget about the state with the longest name.

https://www.newser.com/story/292595/rho ... -name.html

I could see a category about things that changed their name when/if the new season begins. They will certainly have a lot of material.

Johnny Mandel, the Oscar- and Grammy-winning songwriter of “The Shadow of Your Smile,” “Emily,” and the theme from “MASH,” has died. He was 94.

Mandel scored more than 30 films during his Hollywood career, including the 1960s films The Americanization of Emily, The Sandpiper, Harper, An American Dream, The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming, and Point Blank.

In 1970 he scored the film MASH, which required a song he cobbled together from a lyric by director Robert Altman’s 15-year-old son Michael. That tune, “Suicide Is Painless,” later became, in instrumental form, the theme for the long-running TV series and one of his most famous works.

His later film scores included The Last Detail, The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea, Agatha, Being There, Caddyshack, Deathtrap, and The Verdict. Altogether, Mandel racked up one Oscar, three Golden Globe nominations, three Emmy nominations, five Grammy wins, and another twelve Grammy nominations.

Mandel received the Golden Score Award from the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers in 1996; was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010; and named a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2011.

The NFL has announced that "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing," a song also known as the Black national anthem, will be performed live or played prior to "The Star Spangled Banner" at each of the league's Week 1 games in 2020.

"Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing" was a poem written by school principal James Weldon Johnson in 1900 to commemorate the birthday of Abraham Lincoln. Weldon's brother, J. Rosamond Johnson, put the words to music. In 1919, the NAACP adopted the song as "The Negro National Anthem." Today the song appears in most church hymnals and is still sung in many churches across North America.

You can read the lyrics here, and I encourage you to do so.

Composer Ennio Morricone has died in Rome at the age of 91. He was credited with scoring more than 500 films and TV shows, among them The Thing (1982), The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (1966), and The Hateful Eight (2015), the latter of which earned him his only competitive Oscar win out of six nominations.

Country singer, songwriter, and instrumentalist Charlie Daniels has died of a hemorrhagic stroke. He was 83. Daniels found success by blending a traditional country sound with Southern rock to produce such hits as "The Devil Went Down to Georgia," "Uneasy Rider," and "Long-Haired Country Boy."

The musician was a devoted activist on behalf of America’s military, founding the veterans’ assistance nonprofit the Journey Home Project with his manager and making regular appearances before U.S. troops, sometimes in combat zones.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Charlie Daniels on the radio in the late '70s.

Eight-time Olympic gold medalist Usain Bolt and girlfriend Kasi Bennett have welcomed a daughter and given her one of the best (or worst) celebrity child names ever:

⚡️ Olympia Lightning Bolt ⚡️

Normally, I would post a celebrity baby name in a different thread, but the J! writers seem to love Usain Bolt. He appears twenty-three times in the J! Archive, including an eponymous category in 2014.

UNESCO World Heritage Site the Haiga Sophia is becoming a mosque again

https://arstechnica.com/science/2020/07 ... ppens-now/
It became a museum in 1934, under a decree from the Cabinet of Ministers under then-president of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

The country’s Cabinet of State repealed the 1934 order this week, following 15 years of legal back-and-forth over the site’s status; after the final ruling was issued, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan issued the order. The first Friday prayer service is scheduled for July 24.
...
The Turkish government has stated that, although Muslim religious services will resume at the site, it will remain open to visitors of all nationalities and faiths—much like the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, which has been an active Catholic church as well as a major tourist attraction and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Erdogan’s spokespeople have also stated that Christian iconography inside the Hagia Sophia will continue to be preserved as it has been since the 1930s.

The NFL’s Washington franchise is retiring the “Redskins” team name. The team has been called the Redskins since 1933 when its home was Boston. The team moved to Washington DC in 1937. The team is also expected to announce that it will keep the same burgundy and gold colors but will remove all Native American imagery from its logos and graphics.

Washington owner Daniel Snyder has long been adamant about "never" changing the Redskins moniker. But two weeks ago, FedEx, sponsor of the team's stadium, threatened to end its partnership with Washington, and the Snyder began to feel real pressure to make a change.

It's not known when a new name will be announced, but the leading candidates are said to be the Warriors, the RedHawks, and the Redtails. The Redtails name comes from the planes of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American military aviators in the U.S. Armed Forces, whose aircraft had a distinct crimson tail.

Johnnie Walker, the whisky which traces its roots back 200 years, will soon be available in paper bottles.

Diageo, the drinks giant that owns the brand, said it plans to run a trial of the new environmentally-friendly packaging from next year.
...
Diageo said its bottles will be made by pressurising pulp in moulds which will then be cured in microwave ovens.

The bottles will be sprayed internally with coatings that are designed not to interact with the drinks they will contain.

Many cartons made out of paper have a plastic coating inside to stop the drinks leaking out. Diageo, however, said its drinks bottles will not have that plastic coating.
This intrigues me...gotta remember to bring it up to a friend of mine who works up the chain at a liquor store...
