You should take a look at https://raiders.com and see how many times the word Oakland appears there. :D

Coyotes? I believe my answer was Arizona Cardinals. I hope that doesn't change the score, but I had to point it out.

Sadly, the AZ Cardinals have appeared in a Super Bowl - they lost to the Steelers in SB XLIII, played in 2009.

I'm going to take some time to think about this. I'll leave it as is for the time being, but I'll let you know when I make up my mind. I'll consult some impartial folks and people here can weigh in as well. On one hand, Wikipedia does say that they changed their social media from "Oakland Raiders" to "Raiders," so there's an argument that the Oakland Raiders don't exist anymore. There's also a "Las Vegas" section on the team website, touting the move. On the other hand, the schedule is for the stadium to open this summer, in time for the 2020-2021 season, but right now, the 2019-2020 season is still going on. While the Raiders are very much out of contention this season, they did play this season as Oakland.

Been avoiding the boards lately since I was behind several days on watching GOAT on delay. So I missed entering by a few hours apparently. Of course I would have had a 4 and a 2 to start. At least I'm comforted knowing that a few 7s and 8s would inevitably be around the corner!

For a bonus after Q3, we asked if you could name the current and most recent former names of the capital of Kazakhstan. In 2019, the name was changed from Astana to Nur-Sultan. You got 1 point for naming Astana, and 2 for naming Nur-Sultan, for a total possible bonus of -3. The following players received a bonus:

Re: TD 437 - 2019 in Review (Q3-Q4 revealed)

Q4. Letter and answer required. In April, a fire engulfed the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, France. Answer one of the following questions (perhaps loosely) related to fire:
  1. While the New York Police Department is sometimes referred to as "New York's Finest," what is the parallel superlative nickname for the New York Fire Department?
  2. Mrs. O'Leary's cow is a common scapegoat for an 1871 fire that burned much of what city?
  3. What alcoholic beverage, fitting this category, is perhaps the best-known product manufactured by the Sazerac company?
  4. Who was the sitting U.S. President when the White House was burned by the British?
  5. In their 2003 single "Danger! High Voltage", Electric Six announces that there is a fire in the disco. According to the next several lines of this song, name another location where we might find a fire (two possible answers, graded separately).
  6. What U.S. city is known for (among other things) being built on top of its "Underground," the remnants of its former self, destroyed in a fire in 1889?
  7. Due to a certain novel, you probably know the temperature at which paper auto-ignites (really, that temperature is within a range that depends on the conditions and composition of the paper). In 2007, Robert Calvert released an album whose title was an allusion to the metric equivalent of the Ray Bradbury novel. The title of that album was "Centigrade ___." What number fills in that blank? Arguably, Calvert did his math slightly incorrectly, as he should have rounded up instead of down.
  8. A mine fire that started in 1962 in the town of Centralia has rendered the town uninhabitable, and led to the evacuation of all but seven of its residents. An abandoned portion of Route 61, now known as the "Graffiti Highway," leads up to this town in what US state?
  9. Married to Aphrodite in order to prevent war, who was the Greek god of fire? He is also known as the god of metalworking, stonemasonry, forges, and sculpture.
  10. "_______ is a great guy, isn't he? Donating money to set the Amazon on fire." The name of what famous American actor fills in this unfounded accusation from Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, made in November of 2019?
We had a couple of letter omissions (I hate penalizing for it, but I put that sanity check at the end of the quiz for a reason), and while Atlanta does have an "underground," it's not due to a fire in 1889.

My college roommate had the song in question on part E as his ringtone, so I got very familiar with it.

I knew eSwatini would sheep. But I couldn't resist submitting it anyway.

Also, for what it's worth, apparently the Raiders plan to move into their new HQ in Henderson, NV around June. As a Chiefs fan, this just feels so weird to me. I don't want the Las Vegas Raiders as a rival. (At least it's not London.)

For some reason, I thought my original answer of Washington Wizards might sheep, because I assumed people would think they were being clever with them having made it to the Finals as the Bullets but not the Wizards.
Never been on J!, but once won a knockoff version that aired on local access TV.

You should take a look at https://raiders.com and see how many times the word Oakland appears there. :D
After review, the ruling on the field stands, for 3 reasons.

You can't currently buy licensed Las Vegas Raiders gear, as the NFL is not allowing it - "there is no Las Vegas merchandise because, per NFL rules, the team is still linked to Oakland."

https://www.reviewjournal.com/sports/ra ... gh-demand/

Secondly, the Raiders still have an option for staying in Oakland in 2020 if construction on the new stadium in Las Vegas is delayed (though it's scheduled to open this coming summer, in time for next season). The Raiders have not had a practice or held a team function, let alone play a game, as the Las Vegas Raiders. There is not even a guarantee that the Raiders will play a game in Las Vegas next season.

Finally, the ongoing 2019-2020 season has not ended, and they were certainly the Oakland Raiders during this season.

Q5. Letter and answer required. Also in April, Volodymyr Zelensky was elected President of Ukraine. Oddly enough, he previously played a fictional Ukranian president on TV. Select one of the pictured fictional leaders, and name either the actor/actress or character name. Each of the two possible answers on each clue will be graded separately.

A somewhat obscure bonus here - if you followed the news, you might've heard it in passing, but this played even harder than I thought it would.

Q5B (possible bonus of -3 points for correct, partial credit if you get at least one capitalized word in the title, no penalty for wrong guess). Name the show on which Volodymyr Zelensky played President Vasyl Petrovych Holoborodko.

Nonetheless, the show was called "Servant of the People." Players receiving a bonus:

Re: TD 437 - 2019 in Review (Q7-Q8 revealed)

Post by SenseiCAY »

Q7. City and state required. For almost two months (from April 4 to June 3, with a two-week break for the Teachers Tournament), many of us on this board were enthralled, amazed, and sometimes polarized by the performance of James Holzhauer, who earned $2,464,216 over the course of 32 wins and an eventual loss to Emma Boettcher. James was sometimes known by the alliterative moniker "Jeopardy James," and in 16 of his 32 wins, he beat Roger Craig's old single-day earnings record of $77,000. Name a US city (in one of the 50 states - not any outlying territories) whose first letter is the same as the first letter of its state, and whose population, according to the US Census's 2018 estimate, is over 77,000. Be sure to include the state (2-letter postal code accepted). According to the same source, the three most populous "alliterative cities" that don't meet the population threshold are Iowa City, Iowa; Temple, Texas; and Missoula, Montana.

Re: TD 437 - 2019 in Review (Q7-Q8 revealed)

We have a couple of singleton machines this morning - Q8 also had many possible answers.

Q8. Word required. Merriam-Webster's 2019 Word of the Year is "they," which can refer to a singular person whose gender identity is non-binary. Name an English word containing all of the letters T, H, E, and Y. The letters may appear in any order, and do NOT have to appear consecutively. For the purposes of this question, I will use the Merriam Webster online dictionary to determine validity, so spelling counts. Aside from that, Scrabble rules apply (no abbreviations or words that are always capitalized or require punctuation of any sort). All forms of the same word that satisfy the letter requirement will be graded together (e.g. plural and singular forms of a noun, all tenses/forms of a verb, adverbs that are an adjective with -ly added to the end, etc.). If your word has an entry in the MW online dictionary that is not capitalized, not punctuated, and not an abbreviation, then I'll count it.

I also added a question at the end, asking what sparked joy for you this past decade. Here are some of the answers I got (and were allowed to share):

This being JBoard, Jeopardy was popular, and certainly would've been one of my picks:
  • Jeopardy selection
  • Jeopardy
  • Being on Jeopardy!
  • Beginning to watch Jeopardy regularly in 2015; I feel I've matured a lot as a learner and global resident since then, but the show has also provided something for me to look forward to every day, no matter how good/bad things are going.
Family and kids were also popular - I, too, got married last year, so this would've been one of mine as well:
  • First grandchild last year -- now 11 months old.
  • kids
  • My kids
  • my daughter
  • The birth of my 2 kids!
  • daughter accepted to U of Mich
  • Seeing my son discover his calling in life and achieve it
  • My wife. :)
  • My fiancee
  • My wedding ring
  • That nothing major went wrong, no close family died
Naturally, the Venn diagram between these two areas wasn't empty:
  • I got engaged. I also appeared on Jeopardy!.
  • Being on Jeopardy! and Millionaire; meeting the brother I didn't know I had; traveling
