TD 444 - 40 For 40 (Final results)

Post by clt013 »

Welcome to TD 444. I hope you are all safe and well during this unusual time and that the following questions may provide at least a brief escape from all things quarantine.

Since this marks the 40th TD that I have hosted, all questions are related to that number and "40 For 40" is the title of the quiz.

Thanks for checking this out and good luck to all who choose to enter!

Rules/Notes
1) Lowest point total wins; your score for each question is equal to the total number of players submitting that same answer
2) You may use one drop and take zero points for one question
3) You may elect to take the sheep (most popular) answer for one question
4) Wrong responses are the "sheep" answer +4
5) All answers are due by 10 AM Central time on Monday, April 27, 2020
6) If you need clarification on a clue, want to verfiy your responses or have other questions please PM me.
7) Submit answers via this Google form or PM

Chicago State
Coppin State

George Washington
Hampton
Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC)
Omaha
San Diego
Tulsa
Wichita State

3. Most full-time employees have a 40 hour work week. One of my past jobs was with the Census Bureau - best known for "counting people" every 10 years. Based on 2019 estimates, name one of the 10 least populated states in the US.

4. American Top 40 has counted down the week's highest charting records since 1970. Give the artist for one of the listed songs. [Hint: Initials include ND, DL and SW.]

#1 on the inaugural broadcast: Mama Told Me Not to Come (1970)
First "Long-Distance Dedication": Desiree
#1 on the last countdown of Casey Kasem's first stint as host: Roll With It
Last #1 when the show was pulled from American stations in 1994: Don't Turn Around

5. The number 40 appears in the Bible over 150 times. Answer one of these clues about some of those appearances.

Isaac was 40 years old when he married this woman (Genesis 25:20)
Moses was called to spend 40 days and 40 nights on this mountain (Exodus 24:18)

For 40 days this guy from Gath came forward every morning and evening and took his stand (1 Samuel 17:16)
The main hall in front of the Most Holy Place in the temple was 40 of these in length (1 Kings 6:17)
This son of David reigned over all Israel 40 years (2 Chronicles 9:30)
This prophet lay on his right side for 40 days to bear the sin of the people of Judah
Jonah proclaimed this city would be overthrown in 40 days (Jonah 3:4)
More than 40 men were involved in a plot to kill this prolific epistle writer (Acts 23:13)

6. Interstate 40 runs for over 2500 miles across the US. Name one of the states through which it passes.

Host of The Masked Singer who was once married to Mariah Carey
He played Kevin, who was left Home Alone in a 1990 movie
Canadian actor whose career began on The Mickey Mouse Club; later had a starring role in The Notebook

Actor who had leading roles in films Magic Mike and 21 Jump Street
That 70s Show actor who voiced the lead character in children's show Handy Manny

8. The 40th state admitted to the union was one of the Dakotas. Both states have colleges which play home games in domed stadiums. For the purposes of this question, pretend that the NFL is able to hold its 2020 season in teams' actual stadiums (highly unlikely, I realize) and name a franchise that could play its home games under a roof (either retractable or "permanent").

Your response of Toreros for question 2 is indeterminate. There are three NCAA schools in San Diego: the San Diego State University (SDSU) Aztecs, the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) Tritons, and the University of San Diego (USD) Toreros. Almost any San Diego resident, when asked about the “San Diego” university basketball team, would assume you were talking about SDSU. Nobody calls USD the “San Diego university”. I noted this ambiguity on my entry. You should give any of Toreros, Tritons, or Aztecs credit.

You might have an argument with Tritons, but I have to disagree on Aztecs. San Diego State is clearly not San Diego, just like no TD would give credit for answers like Michigan Spartans or Florida State Gators.

My point is that there is NO “San Diego” university, so any of the three should be accepted.

This is turning out to be my worst TD ever. I just can't stay away from those sheep and near sheep.
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

Of course I was going to pick the Vikings. You had no chance at a singleton on that one.

Meanwhile, I'm having my best one yet, 2nd place without having used my drop yet. The problem is gwallace2 is playing even better! I knew I should have picked California for I-40, I'd be in the lead if I did...

6. Interstate 40 runs for over 2500 miles across the US. Name one of the states through which it passes.

11. (BONUS)
B. US Highway 40 passes through 10 states between its starting and ending points in Utah and New Jersey. Name up to 8 cities (and include their state) that are among the 4 largest in population for a state which the "Main Street of America" passes through between UT and NJ. [Note: You may name multiple cities from the same state.]

WRONG ANSWERS = 9
(Utah)
Oh. Ok then.

If you were trying to trick players, then congratulations, you got me.

As a Californian, both Interstate 40 and Highway 40 are simply "The 40," which may have contributed to my mistake.

Also, the bonus questions often refer back to a previous question, which may have also contributed to my mistake.

Oh well. I learned something.
I had a dream that I was asleep and then I woke up and Jeopardy! was on.
