Fourth Podium Poll for 2/4/2020

Post by opusthepenguin »

Archived game: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6542
Game thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5568

Mrs Penguin was out of town when this aired, so we just got around to seeing it. It more than merits a fourth podium poll, even a belated one. It's not just possible to win from the fourth podium, it's possible to have a runaway going into FJ.

Obviously at this remove you're not going to remember which ones you got right, so just play the clues fresh and see how you do. The poll includes the contestants' wrong and non- responses to indicate where you'd have extra time to find the correct info in your head. This was helpful to me on the Port Authority bus station clue. Like Travis, I rang in (mentally, in my case) and then blanked. But once he was done hemming and hawing, I knew what to say. Similarly, Nipun's incorrect response of "Nimitz" kept me from ringing in on the $2000 ADMIRABLE ADMIRALS clue. I'm not sure if I'd have rung in, but that's definitely what I would have guessed if I had. Since Nipun headed me off, I clammed and don't have to take $2000 off my score.

Here are the scores going into and coming out of FJ:

Travis Gaylord: 5000+201=5201
Kathryn Flucht: 2400-2399=1
Nipun Tulshian: 5200-5200=0

Travis is the only one who got FJ right, so if you can put together $10,001, you're bulletproof. Let us know in the comments whether you did this before or after FJ.

$11200 in trash! Lock game. Got FJ right which would net me an extra $799 since I'd obviously bet to preserve my runaway.

I'd bet the majority of boardies are at least headed into FJ in first place here, even if they don't have a runaway. For those that are close, there's a reversible error in the $1000 IRRITABLE OWL SYNDROME clue: "When Winnie the Pooh & Piglet go to see Owl's tree house in this forest, the wind knocks the tree over." Kathryn's response of "What is the Hundred Acre Woods?" was accepted and allowed to stand. If you were prepared to rebound with "What is the Hundred Acre Wood?" (no terminal s) and that would have affected the outcome, you have an argument for being brought back to the fourth podium at a later game.

There's a similar question in the other direction for the response Mrs P gave to the $400 NEWER WORLD HERITAGE SITES clue: "UNESCO mentioned the picturesque & romantic movements when it added this English "district" beloved by Coleridge". She said "What is the Lakes District?" The district is referred to either as "The Lake District" (no s) or "The Lakes". But arguably her response could be parsed as "What is the 'Lakes' district?" with "(the) Lakes" forming her actual response and "district" just repeating a word from the clue. I'm inclined to give it to her, especially in a game where "Hundred Acre Woods" was accepted.

But if your neg was Nimitz, you didn't deduct $2000 since Nipun said it first, right? How about the Hundred Acre Wood(s) loophole? Work with me here. I think we can get you a runaway.

Side discussion: Does Nimitz meet the definition of "negbait" for that clue? I'm tempted to say it does, but I also admit this isn't a strong area of knowledge for me.

$14,200 in LT if I added correctly, plus a correct FJ. Blanked on vintner, didn't know about Birdman and drums, and had no guess for the Swahili greeting. Some of the TSs seemed a little surprising.

I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

I was able to reconstruct my LT from a post in the discussion thread. I said I had $3,200 in the J! round, and since there was $3,800 available, no $200s missed, and only one $600 missed, Dodge City has to be the one I didn't get. (On my reread, I got Dodge City but blanked on Ralph Kramden's name, for a total of $2,800.) In DJ, I said I had $10,400. I missed drums and mambo both times around (this time I know I clammed on mambo). I also reported in the thread that Nimitz was my first guess but I was able to jump to Rickover after Nipun negged; the nature of such rebounds makes them impossible to recreate in reading J! Archive, so I wouldn't quite say I got that clue this time, but upon seeing the response I remembered that I had gotten it while watching. So $13,600 pre-FJ for me, and I dutifully bring it as high as $16,799 in Final.

The little gray cells took that to mean $10k before FJ.

$14K, but I think I missed FJ the first time around, so I'd take my lock and be happy.

Vintner, A, liver, Dodge City, Hawaiian, Prokofiev, Eastwood.

$7600 by my count, which with a FJ get is enough, even if you take off $2000 for saying Nimitz which according to the poll I did.
Oh, what has science wrought? I sought only to turn a man into a metal-encased juggernaut of destruction powered by the unknown properties of a mysterious living crystal. How could this have all gone wrong?
