Brad, the reigning ToC champ at the time, drew two 4x champs, so as he should he moved on with the automatic semifinal spot.

Claudia played well enough to put herself in position for a possible wildcard spot even though she had a whopping undisciplined 8W.

Kate had the longest layoff off the three in having not played since the 1990 Super J! series. 8R was not going to cut it to move on to the following week.

The FJ! clue was a current event back then while the same idea still gets floated in 2020. Quick solve.

Social media is going to have a field day with "Before Brad".

INstaget FJ.

Sounded to me like Claudia got away with "Deschamp".

Well, Claudia was a ton of fun. Loved the way the sound conveniently cut out for a second after she negged with the Pre-Raphaelites. Brad showed why he's an uber-champ with DD2. Not that it was super-tough. But he clearly started out baffled, kept calm, and worked his way to a response where so many other contestants would have panicked.

FJ: Well, I learned something new today.
It's the end of the journey that counts.

56 R (Missed the Cool Hand Luke character, "Seventh" $800, and a couple clues in "New York Times" Magazine.)
DD: 3/3
FJ:
LT: Sandro Botticelli, Constantin Brancusi, Sailfish, Transcendentalist, Chimera, Althing, Realism

Fun Fact: The Rodin, Botticelli, and Brancusi clues in the Art & Artists category were recycled verbatim and used in the category "European Art" in Larissa Kelly's second game. Botticelli and Brancusi still stumped the players.

After a little bit of research, I'm almost 100% certain that I would have gotten FJ! correct when the show aired. In an episode of The West Wing, they specifically talk about abolishing the penny, which proves impossible - not because of a zinc lobbying group, but because a key politician whose support was needed to pass the legislation was from Illinois. Because Lincoln is on the penny, it's a no-go. And because I know I watched episodes of The West Wing pretty much either live or on VCR/TiVo within the week during that period, the idea of abolishing the penny would have been fresh on my mind - the episode aired on November 2001, just a few months before the J! episode aired.

For the record, for real - I think non-collectible physical pennies should be abolished. While I generally hate the idea of things that make it "expensive to be poor", if you make five cash transactions a day, and you're unlucky enough that all of them end in 3 or 8 so that you round up 2 cents, that's a dime a day, or $36.50 a year. But decrease that to about 20% of that value, because you get some good transactions that round up, and you're down to $7. And on average it should be neutral - if prices are random.

And if you're fortunate enough to have a credit card - you can keep your virtual penny.

The way things are going, we may suffer deflation and the penny will be worth something again.

I can at long last say this on the right timing in 15-17 years, but I always loved Alex’s remark at the beginning of this episode about how 11 of the 15 competitors were unmarried. And to the best of my knowledge, the 4 that were married at the time were Kate, Leslie F, Robin, and India.

Since zinc has been in the news this year as a part of treatment for COVID-19, my mind immediately went in the direction of medicine and vitamins. Goes to show you how some FJ are ageless while others are more time dependent.

Hurricane took out our cable, so I missed out on a fun show, and baby Rutter.

I can't wait for the comeback of the 15-cent hamburger, 10-cent Coke, and 20-cent triple-thick shake.

Contestant interviews here. The Rutter interview is more extensive. Not sure about the others:

When I saw the category I thought it would be one that would have been much easier to someone in 2002. But this was an instaget for me.

Mentioning the players’ marital status seemed a bit odd, even for 2002. At least Alex didn’t comment on a woman working in sports.
