Alex says "genre" today to give everyone a smile.

David and Beth had their chances to win but were thwarted by a lost farm on DD2 and an unfortunate cross-out in the FJ! round.

Joe was 2/2 on big clues to take the title in a much better game today with all 61 clues seen and a combined Coryat over 40K.

The FJ! category had me go a little crazy with 6 precalls: Picasso, Warhol, Dali, O'Keeffe, Pollock and the right guy

I looked at that clue trying to see if I recognized the names for any kind of hint. Nope, I was left in the pick-a-Spaniard dilemma. Beth's incorrect response went on my paper and my Spidey-sense was telling me it was too easy and obvious. I mentally debated switching to Dali for some kind of Surrealist club, but did not make the move. With under five seconds to go I kept hearing in my head, "Switch! Switch!" and I scribbled the correct name after a fast cross out. [Wipes brow]

Joe couldn't cover Beth's possible 28400 to make her error not matter other than consolation prize placement. No, he just had to do an under wager to increase her haunt factor. Now, Joe can buy a whole bunch more Captain America gear for walking around Disneyland. Whenever he can get in the place.

I got this FJ thanks to a post from back in 2019 when I was posting more regularly in the New Old Games thread:
MinnesotaMyron wrote: Sat Dec 21, 2019 9:15 pm I did an Archive search last week on Mexican muralists, so I'll pick ART for $1000 as clue of the game. He was a question at the Pub Quiz Tournament of Champions last Tuesday, and I'm glad I've finally stopped confusing his name.
He painted a gigantic mural on the history of Mexico before he died in 1957
Spoiler
Who is Diego Rivera? There are a couple of other names you might guess (Orozco, & Siqueiros), but this one is as good as Pavlov for Mexico + mural.
Gotta click that spoiler box.

My mnemonic for remembering his name is that he was married to fRiDa Kahlo, and his initials are in her first name, backwards.

The game is in: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6824

It hit me later that my "pick-a-Spaniard" was not accurate though the result was fine.

Crazy that we've had two games in a row now where a contestant crossed out the right FJ answer and thus got it wrong. Combine that with David's tragic DD miss, and Joe is one of the luckiest champions I've seen in recent years.

Since I had not heard of the two artists in the clue, I suspected we were not looking at one of the more famous Spanish artists like Picasso, Dali or Miro, which quickly took me to Mexico and the right answer.

:) Can someone start an official "genre" tally?
Had to root for La Mirada, so I'm glad Joe did well.

Couldn't pull Diego Rivera, guessed Picasso just to have something. :(

Picasso was my guess too. Not sure how I would have connected those names to Mexico without having a much, much deeper knowledge of Mexican art. Poll request?

Picasso here, too. Rivera might have been a 3rd guess after Dali.

Coryat $42800 (49R, 0W)
DD 2/3
FJ :(

Had a lackluster J! round but went 28/30 in DJ with one miss on a clam and one where I was too slow. Saying Foursquare for Square gave me my first DD miss of the season, and devoting all my attention to Spain gave me my first FJ miss of the season.

It was nice to see all the clues for a change! I'm impressed that 2/3 contestants got Final. That struck me as a hard one (not just because I didn't get it).

I said "Diego Rivero" but I think if I was writing it down hopefully I would have fixed my mistake.

What led to Tchaikovsky instead of Beethoven on the "Pathetique" clue? The documentary itself seems pretty obscure so I guess it is just the name "Pasternak" being of yiddish/russian/ukranian origin. I was only familiar with the Beethoven work so I went with him.

I’m guessing the judges wouldn’t accept my FJ response of “who was that dude who was married to Frida Kahlo.”

One thing that got me to the correct response was that the two names in the clue seemed like new world names--Orozco in particular. I don't know if that observation is justified, but it was certainly my instinct. The other instinct was that the writers wouldn't ask us to know a group of Spanish-named artists that included Picasso but not Dali or vice versa. I'm not saying there aren't other groups where we're expected to know that only one belongs--e.g. Dali the surrealist vs Picasso the cubist. But when the major TOM is the Spanish names of two guys you've never heard of, they're not asking you to somehow know which of two famous 20th century Spanish artists to pick.

But when it comes right down to it, with a different clue, I might have written the above paragraph to justify my wrong guess of Rivera when everyone else either knew the right response or at leas knew it was a Picasso/Dali coin flip.

I thought of Picasso but dismissed him because of his association with Paris. I know he was born in Spain and proudly associated with Spain, but I didn't think he would be grouped with other Spanish artists.

Luckily I went with Rivera.
