Credit to the TV show Nashville for the only reason I knew that open mic place stumper.
Devin can regret missing DD1 though Burt could have just bet more on DD3 if he needed to do it.
The only precall I had for the FJ! clue was Coup d'état. The clue had me stumped and I wrote pirates to avoid a blank page. Not my kind of clue and well done by the gentlemen to both get it.

No double digits in TS clues though enough high value ones for a possible 4th podium win.

There's a saying in Norway.
Spoiler
"When you come to the last Lapp, you must be near the Finnish line"

trash pickup: consent, Beatrix Potter (DD), egalitarian, Apache (not sure if Chiricahua needed), Lapp, egregious for 8000

My mom would have liked the J! board. She's a 3-named Mary and a former school teacher.
Ran Children's Literature and Sandwich Generation, but was 0/5 in Law.
NHO "have skin in the game".
Embarrassed to admit that I whiffed on "Bluebird Cafe". Tootsie's Orchid Lonuge wedged into my brain and refused to leave.
0/5 in People and Black & White Movies. Can't say I recognized anything in the latter whatsoever.
No guess on FJ!
Lach Trash: egalitarian, egregious. Also got the Beatrix Potter DD.

Re: Thursday, November 5, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I was completely lost on FJ!. I'll admit to never having heard of the Peninsular Wars, although I don't think that would have really helped me unless they were particularly known for all that small-group warfare, which I doubt they were. I was surprisingly lost on Spanish war words, which is embarrassing since I did take enough Spanish to have been modestly proficient at one point. If I'd simply translated the word "war" into Spanish, I would have gotten there. Instead, my mind flashed back to Evita, and I got to "descamisado" - shirtless (aka poor) people. That's not right, but I got to "desperado". Still not a war term, and still not a bona fide English word.
Judges: Prince Albert Hall for Royal Albert Hall? It was named for Prince Albert, and the Simple English wiki has it. I think if I'd been BMSed, I'd get there.
I did precall Red Rocks for that category. Also incorrectly precalled MSG, but I retracted it once Radio City was played - no way do two NYC venues get in.
I love little flubs like the pork response...it makes the game human.

Re: Thursday, November 5, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Picked up some quality trash if the judges are kind to me:
Said simply "egality" for egalitarian. It was clear simply equality wasn't acceptable, but is that because it was already in the clue? I'm not sure about this one.
Also said Laplander instead of Lapp. I gave it to myself at the time as I confidently showed I knew the name of the area they were referring to, which is the supposed home of Santa Claus.EDIT: A simple search of "Laplander" comes up with the exact definition of the clue, so I'm counting it.
However, even if these are both accepted, FJ was an absolute stand and stare for me. I even knew at the categories reveal that my streak of 11 correct FJs was finished. Well played to the guys, and I'm very excited to see more of Burt.

So, judge advocate. Do judge adjutant and/or judge adjudicator also work?

Re: Thursday, November 5, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
All I could think of for FJ was conquistador.
All three players were easy to root for in this game. I had come to really enjoy Devin and was hoping he was going to be around for a long run; he certainly seemed to have a deep breadth of knowledge. Burt was overjoyed with his victory, as he should have been.
I got tickled over the cheesesteak clue; Burt was trying so hard but was way off...Devin was quick on the rebound and all three players, and the audience, had a good chuckle.

I wasn’t a fan of the clue, but I tend to be Fossey about the writers.MinnesotaMyron wrote: ↑Thu Nov 05, 2020 3:34 pmWent the conquistador route, so like Mark, I "mist" guerillas.
Re: Thursday, November 5, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I was wondering if Burt might have been thinking about the slightly less famous Philly pork, provolone and broccoli rabe sandwich

Coryat: $44,600
53 R/1 W
DD: 2/3
FJ:
LT: Beatrix Potter (DD), consent, Trubadour, egalitarianism, egregious, Apache, The Lighthouse, Lapp
Glad to see some genuine exuberance out of the past few days' contestants.
"Guerrilla" came to me immediately, but I wasn't 100% sold on it. Luckily, I couldn't think of any other plausible Spanish loanword.
I totally talked myself out of Spartacus for DD3, not sure if he was merely a fictional character. Not very smartacus.

That, and the fact that the clue asked for a word for a belief in equality.BrigadierSolo13 wrote: ↑Thu Nov 05, 2020 8:10 pmPicked up some quality trash if the judges are kind to me:

I see some hits for the former, but not for the latter. In addition, "adjudicator" generally refers to someone in a judge-like role rather than someone serving as counsel.opusthepenguin wrote: ↑Thu Nov 05, 2020 9:40 pmSo, judge advocate. Do judge adjutant and/or judge adjudicator also work?

Re: Thursday, November 5, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
"Guerrilla" just never clicked as a Spanish word to me, since I've only heard the Anglicized pronunciation. If more people pronounced it "gey-RI-ya", rolled R or otherwise, then I would have clued in on it being a Spanish loan word.
After all, words like tortilla, quesadilla, etc. also have the -illa suffix and most people bother to pronounce those the same way that a Spanish speaker would...

Re: Thursday, November 5, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Btw, did anyone else catch BOTH Burt and Alex mispronounce Edmond Halley's name?
After a few listens, I heard both say HAY-LEE with a long a, not the short a(same as "bad" and should rhyme with "valley")
Common mistake, but I always expect Alex to give the correct pronunciation.

Count me as another who has never heard the never heard the phrase "have skin in the game" before. I said "head in the game", but that didn't seem right. And it wasn't.
