Re: Friday, November 27, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Though not positive, I'm pretty certain that Gabriel Ostler is the son of S.F. Chronicle sports columnist Scott Ostler. That pathfinder guy should not go TS.
5000, 3500 and 9000 on the DDs has me hearing Katy Perry's "Firework" although DD1 turned out to be a big dud for Gabriel.
DD3 was clue 26 with Gabriel at 12700 and Chandy at 10600 with 4 clues worth 4800 left. Ryan doing 10000+9000 was quite the move. As it turned out Ryan did not need to be so courageous since he had the sole solve in the FJ! round coming.
The FJ! clue had me match the consolation prize winners as I'm not going to solve that in 30 seconds and just took the simple way out. Nice get by Ryan as I suspect that clue might do worse with S37 J! players than the 33% it hit today.
Clearly Gabriel and Chandy presented game skills that could have won them games with a different draw. Ryan's 2/2 on big clues was path to a big pay day and perhaps more next week.

It's nice to get a geography clue with my middling geography knowledge. I eliminated the Z's as too far south, then started thinking about what was in that area vs. countries in that part of the alphabet.
I should have that little list (countries on the equator) memorized, but, well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .

Yeah, there's only 11. Big help with other countries as well when visualizing maps.MinnesotaMyron wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 2:49 pm I should have that little list (countries on the equator) memorized, but, well ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ .
Of course this clue was easier 25 years ago as the answer was different.
Somebody didn’t read the landlocked word in the clue. Nothing to see here.

If I polled PALINDROMES $1000 would the get rate be above 7%?

Archive playthrough:
Coryat $38,600 (47R, 1W)
DD 3/3
FJ
Had a rough go of it in DJ today. Negged with Spain for Pig War.... history is usually a wheelhouse for me, but the writers found a hole in my knowledge. Couldn't pull Moses+Aaron in time. Had the clue been the other way around, wanting Miriam, I likely would have gotten it. Still have work to do on Bible characters....
Got stuck deciding between Zambia and Zimbabwe for FJ. I correctly guessed that Zambia is farther north, but that got me bupkis.
The "reactive nitrogen" clue was not the best. Nitrogen gas (N2) is what makes up 75% of the atmosphere, and I got it based on that. But reactive nitrogen is in no way, shape, or form a "type" of nitrogen gas. That would be like saying carbon monoxide is a type of oxygen, or for that matter, that carbon monoxide is a type of graphite.

Ran Team Mascots, Adventure Capital, Small Biz, "Cat", Ranks & Titles.
trash: Madam I'm Adam, Orly & CDG, Toni Morrison DD, Fremont, heat shield
on Daily Doubles.
FJ: Didn't go far enough south. Guessed Sudan.

Thinking about Equatorial Guinea helped me with this FJ; I thought no way the "Z" countries are on the same latitude and it was a reasonably quick jump to Uganda.

I was 4-0 for the week but missed the box of honor with Zambia. I did know Zimbabwe was too far South. The equatorial countries seems like something a trivia person should know. Maybe next time.
Ryan has three big wins. Will he be the last superchamp of the Trebek era? We’ll see next week.

My daughter used to go there and I still missed it. Not a name that registers as a palindrome.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 3:17 pm If I polled PALINDROMES $1000 would the get rate be above 7%?

Re: Friday, November 27, 2020 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
There are some groups in Africa who still refer to the Democratic Republic of Congo as Zaire. Do you think the judges would rule that correct? I thought Uganda was a little too far south for some reason, so I would've put Tanzania (which is too far south), but I was thinking about going for the Zaire technicality.

It might have been anticipated, that could be why the landlocked part of the clue was there. It makes Zaire wrong, DR of Congo is not landlocked.Cat Hammarskjold wrote: ↑Fri Nov 27, 2020 6:23 pm There are some groups in Africa who still refer to the Democratic Republic of Congo as Zaire. I don't have a clue which African countries are on the equator, so I just guessed South Sudan.

Normally geography is one of my wheelhouse categories, but any clue that is "close your eyes and picture how things are positioned relative to one another" is like kryptonite to me.

For some reason Gabriel reminded me of mid 70s Dan Akyroyd.

Boy, this has been a pretty fruitful week!
8/10 (would’ve been higher had more people got FJ right)
I too fell for the end of the alphabet.

It's the end of the journey that counts.
