Wow- had I known Farouk (I can't even remember my incorrect answer) I'd've had a plu-perfect week! All correct, and a poll suggestion accepted!

OK with the call, figure they had a chance to check it out (and another example of a badly written clue, seeminly prevalent as of late).

And after last week's horrid FJ showing, came up with a clean sweep.

:(
:? :? :?

For some reason, I thought the FJ response on Monday had to be a boy in 1939 that later went on to direct. The only famous boy in 1939 I could come up with was Mickey Rooney. :(

Pleased I followed a 5/5 with a 4/5 week, though.

Clammed all the rest, I knew the last king of Egypt was dethroned in 1952, but his name wasn't coming tome.

Like the others so far, the judges are wiser than we are, if they found evidence that "squeasy" is acceptable, then that's good enough for me.

WAGged Arizona and The Game of Life on Thurs and Fri - both clues were eminently guessable (I used to have a Scrabble tile bag)...
I knew the story about Queen Bess but I couldn't remember who the gentleman was - I said Francis Drake.
"Squeasy" is in dictionaries - I don't know how anyone can object once that's pointed out.

Had nothin for Scrabble. Think I went with 'Perfection' but I wouldn't know how a turntable would have applied.

I'm giving myself credit for 'Raleigh'...I only managed to blurt out 'Raleigh and the queen' before the contestant started speaking, but I figure I'd've gotten BMSed.

Fine with squeasy, there's plenty of references to it.

No problem with squeasy. The word exists and fit the category and clue.

Another disaster of a week for me.

Monday: Lucky guess from the year.
Tuesday: Honestly, I am surprised that so many people got this one. I had absolutely no idea what that "11,747" was supposed to refer to. I tried to look for a TOM in the specific date but all I could think of was tax day, so that was no help.
Wednesday: blanked. I don't think that it was a great clue but I had no excuse for missing it. The "not wanting to be famous" part made me think more in terms of people who might have been a little shy, as opposed to total hermits.
Thursday: The quote got me to the "show me state" but I couldn't remember what state that was.
Friday: Instant get.

Farouk was at the tip of my tongue.

I don't know enough about the squeasy thing to have an opinion, so I didn't vote, but I would probably trust the judges.

I am probably in the minority on this one, but honestly, I thought that this week of FJ clues was pretty crappy. On a happier note I thought that the three extra clues that Mark picked were all excellent ones.

No idea on Monday-Thursday. Not even an educated guess. Not even an ex-recto.

I knew Farouk's name, damn it.

I'm surprised J. D. Salinger is doing so poorly in the poll. Didn't anyone read Shoeless Joe?

No. I only saw the movie.

As pretty much the originator of the squeasy controversy, I just reacted "is that a real word?" and with good reason. The word is obsolete at best, and does not appear in most contemporary dictionaries. It does appear in some unabridged ones, and the definition fits the clue, so the judges had to go with that in the end.

My first 5 for 5 week in a while (I surely needed it after a string of 1 for 5s), missed the perfecto for the sake of spacing on the Silas Marner pavlov.

'Squeasy' is okay, it's just rare and perhaps obsolete.

Cannot believe I couldn't come up with Salinger. (And yes, I read Shoeless Joe.)
For the Walter Scott clue I could only come up with "the knight and the maiden."
