I actually had Brigham Young written down, but knew it didn't feel right. I crossed it out and had Stanford with plenty of time.

Have to agree. When I saw the clue, I was expecting at least two right and was very surprised at the TS. It's enough of a semi-favorite that it should be a virtual Pavlov to those who study via the archive, where there a quite a few hits. It may be worth remembering that

"University" AND ("golden spike" OR "Promontory Point" OR "transcontinental railroad") = "Stanford".
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.

I knew Stanford but I did wonder about BY. It turns out Brigham had 56 children. He died 8 yrs after the event in question.

If I had considered Brigham Young for this FJ - which I didn't - I would have assumed that the "luminaries" who created the continental railroads would not have considered Brigham Young one of them - too early in Mormonism's history. Not sure if that's true.

He was governor of the Utah Territory 1851-58. So he wasn't just a church leader.

Did dominating the territory mean respectability in the country at large?
