Re: Friday, April 30, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Categories matter. The light bulb seemed to go on for Emily on DD1 when she remembered it was AFRICAN AMERICAN MEMOIRS. The players seemed to have problems with recalling it was not just animals but 7-LETTER ANIMALS.
Credit to crossword puzzles for knowing the Insecure actress.
The FJ! clue had me stumped and wrote Kipling to have something. During think time I dismissed Swift & C.S. Lewis and after think time during the reveals I thought it could not be Hilton of Lost Horizon fame.
Many moons ago I read the correct's author famous work as well as seeing the movie many times. That was no help today. I have also read one of the other books in the series and suspect the right names were not in that one either. I should have paid more attention to the late alphabet work in the clue's wording and instead was blindly trying to hit upon the right author.
It's not as if I WROTE THAT $1200 from this game was going to hit me today: https://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=2987
Emily was 3/4 on big clues and that was plenty even though her huge loss on DD2 kept the result in doubt for the last round.
Bill Whitaker on Monday and no matter how good he is I find it hard to believe I will be able to go through 10 games without thinking about the man in charge being a guest host they way these ten games flew by without that distraction.
Sheila made sure she would not lose the 2nd place money while the possible 9900 if correct was not going to be Emily even on a miss. If travel expenses are coming into play for such decisions then I can't argue with a bump for consolation prizes.

I'm curious Mark. Do you think adding the year 1905 would have helped you at all? 1900 being Oz is one of the big book-year Pavlovs.

Tough one and don't know. The names had me thinking Asian though 1905 could have had me get it right with a Barrie detour. 1905 would not have eliminated Kipling for me.MinnesotaMyron wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 1:57 pm I'm curious Mark. The next question is whether Hammer will get it for an elusive 5/5 week? His being a Wheel guy could have him sniff out something with the end of alphabet stuff. Hope he does not figure out the right area and then blank on the writer's name.

I got it right but I was waffling between him and C.S. Lewis. Knowing the year definitely would have made me feel more confident as I know the exact day Lewis died.MinnesotaMyron wrote: ↑Fri Apr 30, 2021 1:57 pm I'm curious Mark. John looked like he was going to climb back into it but slipped back downhill again.

I'm preempted by the Draft, so I just read the FJ clue. Didn't have the slightest idea, so I said Johnson just to say something.

If there's a conflict airing J!, WABC usually puts it on a subchannel. Not tonight.
EDIT: WABC said it will air tonight's episode tomorrow (Saturday) at 7 pm (if the Draft ends on time).

Re: Friday, April 30, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I had FJ rock solid... but I couldn't actually say how. I read at least a dozen or more of his books in that genre... and I guess at some point I must have read something that connected the better known bit to the lesser known. In any case I knew right off.
I like this champ. She plays boldly and she knows a lot of stuff. She made bug bets, lost, and came back! That's fun to watch.

"Ix" gave Final J away for me ... it was referenced in the FJ from this game in 1998 ...
https://j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=614
... which was reprinted in one of the old Jeopardy! Quiz Books, volumes that proved invaluable for J! prep back in the olden times.

Re: Friday, April 30, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
So much for a 5/5 FJ week for me. Baum was actually my first guess, but then I thought of Tolkien and the guy who wrote the books on which Game of Thrones was based. I couldn't pull Martin's name...so I went with Tolkien.
This was only the second game that I saw with Cooper as host, but I have to say that he is my favorite guest host so far.
