Re: Tuesday, May 4, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Emily is the first champ that I've notice there you can really see the Holzhauer effect in a single player.
All in on 6 out of 8 daily doubles. It takes guts, but it works.
Based on Coryat score she only had one really strong game versus her competitors. That was Friday and that game included the two daily doubles she didn't go all in, but she did wager $8,000 when she had a $9,000 lead. She missed, but that wager is going for the throat. The other game she had the best Coryat with 10,800 versus 7,400 and she won with a lock.
The topper is she got beat badly today 18,000 to 8,400 (Coryat), but had she got the "Shannon" river, she would have lost Coryat by 8,000, and would have only trailed by $3,200 going into FJ. With the result of FJ, would have won her 4th game at over $100,000 and would have been very much in line for a ToC.

That clue about Taiwanese islands is more interesting than I thought. Quemoy island is also called Kinmen and it's located in an awkward spot.

Yes, the J! and DJ! rounds were like day and night:MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Tue May 04, 2021 1:46 pm Bill opened the DJ! round by saying there were no incorrect responses in the J! round. The players' scores combined for 20,000 or 2K over the board values. Of course that meant the DJ! round was going to go rough and both Emily & Brittany ended up with their scores lower after 58 clues than they were after 30 clues.
Ring the doorbell and run away? Definitely ditch and not dash in my neighborhood. A very rare antic for my friends and I as we had other ways of being nuisances in our youth.
J! round - 17,000 combined Coryat (the TS on "furniture" was the only blemish.)
DJ! round - 11,600 combined Coryat
Not that I played that prank under any name, but I always remember hearing it as "d-d ditch'em".

Re: Tuesday, May 4, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Today was a poor DJ for me as well, as I went fumbled on both DD's in epic fashion:
For DD2, I confused The Agony & the Ecstasy and the other big Irving Stone book Lust for Life, and said van Gogh
Then just to outdo myself, on DD3, I went back and forth for a few seconds between the River Shannon and the River Clyde. I chose the Clyde because I thought the Shannon was in Scotland
I will take the silver lining on those two embarrassing misses and tell myself that I will never mix those pairs of responses ever again.
At least I somewhat redeemed myself on FJ, first thinking of Night by Elie Wiesel as a memoir about a difficult place, but caught the island chain reference halfway through the music to match today's sole solve.
It's a shame we won't see more of Emily, she really did have the trivia chops and the bold strategy to make waves, but them's the breaks.

Re: Tuesday, May 4, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
I don't know who Emily reminds me of, but her ability to smile while talking is just uplifting. I'm sorry we won't get to see her again in a TOC, but the new champ is silky smooth and may be able to get over the hump.
Bill is a smooth talker. There was one slight delay in confirming a correct clue, unlike many of Anderson's. His delivery seems like he's telling a bedtime story. He was a little too neutral about Emily's dramatic DD3 bet. I hadn't noticed to this point, but Alex frequently (or always) introduced Daily Doubles after the position was called with "Answer....". I don't think any of the guest hosts have used this tell, and I think I prefer the unspoiled surprise.
I thought the book was about bad climates or terrain and came up with nothing. Then I focused on "harsh places" and knew the author was Solzhenitsyn. No way to pull the name of the book and the name of the book barely rings a bell.

What a tale of two halves! I almost picked up enough LT for a fourth podium win but fell just short. I’m sorry to see Emily go as she was a fun champion to watch. Instaget FJ. The clue really gave you all the pieces to put together.

Not only that, but BOTH Juliette Low and the video game Animal Crossing were correct responses in this game just over 3 months ago: https://j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=6927
Both games also featured $2000 clues about Cyclopes (yep, that's the plural of Cyclops, had to look it up myself)
Veeeeery strange...

Do you think they would have accepted "force" instead of "fleet" for "An Armada (5)"?

I would call it a crash and burn.BrigadierSolo13 wrote:It's a shame we won't see more of Emily, she really did have the trivia chops and the bold strategy to make waves, but them's the breaks.
She missed two very gettable clues plus the stand and stare for Shackleton, which combined, would have been enough to prevent the runaway.
Captain Cook for Captain Bligh in the top row, ouch.
If she gets Masters & Johnson (I was stunned at both her's and Brittany's negging on that), Hanna doesn't get the rebound. That's a 4000 swing.

Painful to watch Emily crash like that.
I was hoping somebody would answer "Trudeau" to see if they would BMS it.
Instaget final.

She was slipping, but at least it never became an excruciating "bless her heart" situation. She played with gusto right to the end, and capped her run with the sole FJ solve.
In Southern California, Ding Dong Ditch was perpetrated by small groups, targeting the object of crushes. With more time, equipment, and a slumber party setting, we'd've toilet papered the entire yard.

A lot to write in :30 if you didn't know it early, but found Gulag Archipelago an easy solve. I was wondering about the misspelling but it was moot anyway.
For "armada," I said "force" instead of "fleet."

The high point for me in Tuesday's game was the instaget on Christian Barnard. Crickets from the contestants. I was surprised that turned out to be a EYKIOYD.

"Archipeligo", wasn't it? Since the misvowel was in an unstressed syllable, no problem. Of course, the correct spelling is always safest.Picked Off wrote: ↑Wed May 05, 2021 7:36 am A lot to write in :30 if you didn't know it early, but found Gulag Archipelago an easy solve. So Masters seems to be the one everyone remembers. Score another for the Patriarchy.
Re: Emily's story about "this guy sure likes Delaware", I once spent a night in Dover after our car didn't survive a surprising red light on Route 13. The next morning we were in a cab to the Greyhound station, and our driver was pointing out a house where, I think, the delegates had stayed en route to the Constitutional Convention. My friend/recent driver, after a pause, said "it's good to be proud of your city".
I'm smart and I want respect.

Haven't seen the show so "Masters of Sex" was all I had to go on (which, patriarchy be damned, is an awesome title)
The best thing that Neil Armstrong ever did, was to let us all imagine we were him.

That's pretty unfair blaming it on misogyny. Masters and Johnson were never equals. Masters was a doctor and Johnson was his research assistant. Then they became sexually involved and he left his wife for her.
Masters would have been a lot better off to take on an equal partner, because when he died, the Masters and Johnson Institute fell apart.
As depicted in the television series, Johnson served as the body demonstrator in some 16 mm films that Johnson made to illustrate his research. His colleagues in St Louis regarded them as porn rather than as educational films. The colleagues also recognized Johnson as the one in them, even though her face was never seen. This was an error on their part, as they could easily have used some sex workers who were involved in their project.
I would find an example where the parties are equals or perhaps one where the woman is superior before calling misogyny.
I'd rather cuddle then have sex. If you're into grammar, you'll understand.

I had no idea they were a man and woman who were sexually involved. All I knew they were two people who wrote a book (or something) about sex. Could have been two men or two women for all I knew.

Re: Tuesday, May 4, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Got it from dinner table discussions in the '50s when my parents were very worried about international crises. We had the Cold War going on, neighbors building fallout shelters in their back yards, and then China started shelling Quemoy and Matsu from the mainland and wound up in a sea battle with the Nationalists on Taiwan. For a while it looked like it could have been a hot war with both USSR and PRC. Scary time to be a six-year-old whose parents closely followed international events.MattKnowles wrote: ↑Tue May 04, 2021 10:48 pm Missed Taiwan and said Philippines. I'm curious who got Taiwan.

This next one is an interesting State Department article, especially the last paragraph -- it says PRC and ROC reached an agreement where they would take turns launching an artillery attack on each other on alternate days. And then did it for twenty years.
https://history.state.gov/milestones/19 ... ait-crises
I still remember photos from a National Geographic article about the shelling.
I'm not the defending Jeopardy! champion. But I have played one on TV.
