Missed Taiwan and said Philippines. I'm curious who got Taiwan.
Got it from dinner table discussions in the '50s when my parents were very worried about international crises. We had the Cold War going on, neighbors building fallout shelters in their back yards, and then China started shelling Quemoy and Matsu from the mainland and wound up in a sea battle with the Nationalists on Taiwan. For a while it looked like it could have been a hot war with both USSR and PRC. Scary time to be a six-year-old whose parents closely followed international events.
This next one is an interesting State Department article, especially the last paragraph -- it says PRC and ROC reached an agreement where they would take turns launching an artillery attack on each other on alternate days. And then did it for twenty years.

The Wikipedia article points out that the communist forces had to ditch Dongding island.
Well stated, sir.
Another Philippines response here.
The funny thing is, during the Mastermind Grand Final, one of the contestants had their specialist subject as Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic Expedition and actually visited Dulwich School and that lifeboat.
