Re: Monday, May 24, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Full credits again.
Ryan could not catch a break on the DDs in losing the farm, having next to nothing to bet on DD2 and then Sam betting big on the last one. Sam's $8000 sewed up the match and even on a miss he still would have led Karen for the FJ! round.
The FJ! category was one asking for precalls and the first thing I wrote was the correct one. I added Guernica, American Gothic and a little more general to cover several options, Wyeth.
The FJ! clue seems silly for the semis of a ToC as the leader is going to win and the trailing players have no hope to overcome it. The painting is too much of a J! favorite for the top 9 to miss it even if art is far from their thing.
The last ToC had a rematch with James and Emma in the finals. Way back in Season 35 Ryan Bilger's run was cut short by running into Sam on his debut. In that game Sam added 16 large in going 3/3 on DDs and "only" led by $4200 going into the FJ! round.
A rematch? We'll find out tomorrow.

A correction came in to capitalize "mom" on this clue: It's the leading segment of an army's forces, as mom & her soccer kids know
Accept or reject? If yes, then please teach me a grammar rule unfamiliar to me.

If "mom" or "dad" (etc.) is used as a name (referring to a specific person) then it is capitalized.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon May 24, 2021 2:53 pm A correction came in to capitalize "mom" on this clue: It's the leading segment of an army's forces, as mom & her soccer kids know

The application of that rule to this particular case, where the person being referred to is sort of a hypothetical mom, I am not so clear about.

This was not a good board for me at all, but I did precall Claudius/France and Trajan/Spain in Roman Emperors. And the Rivers category was an easy run.
I precalled American Gothic for FJ, but the clue was an instant get. I agree that it was a joke for a ToC FJ clue.
Congratulations to Sam on reaching the finals! And kudos to Karen and Ryan for their showings in the tournament!

Did you know that Hopper did clowns?
The FJ category had me expecting something unusual with “Artwork” but nope- just an ordinary painting. Why go with artwork over art or painting. Just seems odd
Congrats Sam. I know they all can’t win but I felt for Karen tonight.
Dumb question - they introduce Sam as a substitute teacher. What kind of gig is that? Does he get a full-time salary? Is it like a temp job? Does one work as a sub for schedule flexibility?
I’m assuming Split is a town in Croatia? That blew right by me. NPR had a story tonight about tourism in Croatia post-lockdown. I’m intrigued!

Second-largest city in Croatia, actually, right on the Adriatic. Diocletian's Palace is right at the top of its Wiki page.

KDVR in Denver messed up. No sound for first segment, then went to Wheel of Fortune after sound returned during commercial. I'll have to "find" it now. Argh!

For whatever reason, Sam's 5-day total listed on his ToC page are wrong.

37R. 3/4 on big clues. Missed jettison. Thought of jet and jetsom but didn't get to jettison.
Some clues that I missed that I want to get next time are huaraches, romper, pashmina, Sam Elliott, and Quincy Jones.
The TOO MUCH category was tough for me. Might have gotten some more of those but not fast enough.
It seemed like Buzzy gave a lot less extra information today.
Still not sure how to learn about fashion. I read the clothing article on Wikipedia and I'm trying to go through the subcategories. Doesn't seem like an efficient approach.

I had a dream that I was asleep and then I woke up and Jeopardy! was on.

Nighthawks never crossed my mind. Always thought it was an outdoor counter, anyway. Never have looked at that painting very close at all due to total lack of interest in "fine art" type paintings... My thought was "Whatever Toulouse Lautrec called that Moulin Rouge thingamjigger...".
Looked closer using Google Images.. Yup, I'm wrong.

I got "Nighthawks" because of the "Pearls Before Swine" anthology book that parodied it.
I don't even like "Pearls Before Swine".

Tonight's embarrassing kneejerk for me:
Seemed like an awfully easy FJ for the ToC semis. I kept trying to think if there was some other painting with a restaurant I could be forgetting.
I blurted out "Sherpa" before really reading the entire clue,In "The Moth and the Mountain", the moth is a gipsy moth, one of these Maurice Wilson used to get to Everest in the 1930s
