Right, and I think it's also the cumulative effect. It's not just the TPIR allegations or his podcast comments. It's also the suspicious way he ended up with the gig when there were so many strong contenders. The whole affair just had a bad smell to it.
And he had the ADL baying for his blood - I suspect that might have been what did him in.

Within the last few seconds, between my multiple browser refreshes, the "host" label has been removed from Mike's bio on the official Jeopardy! website. Awkward two days' of work for the webmaster.

It's 9:30 A.M. Pacific time.

I don't know if you're serious but just in case: it would have the same effect if any other national-profile organisation were calling for his ouster - NAACP or anything similar. It just happened to be the ADL.

At this point I think his hosting ship has probably sailed.
Yep, no way everyone forgets everything in a few years and says "This guy should replace Sajak". He'll probably still have a long career behind the scenes, but he's not hosting anything ever.

I sure had the 'over' on the bet on how long Mike Richards would last. I thought Sony had to know about the podcasts and was ready to deal with it, at least for a while.

Here's the kicker.
If Mike Richards had just done what he said he would do and worked on the selection process, without entering himself as a candidate, he'd be much better off today.
He got to look like the savior of the show (okay, overstating a bit) jumping in for Ken (which I'm still suspicious about). Then, at the end of the process, when Mayim Bialik can't host full time, Richards comes in as a temporary host until she is free or they decide on an interim host (even if they don't call him/her that). Hero. He fulfills a life dream, and keeps his day job as producer and clue writer (which he should not continue - awkward to say the least).

Fishercat wrote: Fri Aug 20, 2021 11:08 am I don't think Sony had much of a choice after the podcast comments became public if they want the show to survive. This feels very weird to say given the relative severity of an insensitive comment versus sexual harassment/wrongful termination allegations, but on a host level the former is probably more concerning for Sony. Potentially having Jewish, female, and/or overweight contestants or staff having those kinds of comments in the back of their head isn't really tenable and I think opens up some valid avenue for complaints about bias from the host against certain types of contestants, which would be a death knell for an up-and-up gameshow.

I don't know how far it could actually go in reality but merely the perception is likely enough. As someone who is only one of those three things (overweight to be clear), I live with the understanding that much of the population will judge me on it, but I'd certainly feel less comfortable about going on the show with him as host.
If I ever compete on one of his shows, I'm deliberately going dressed in a muu-muu and smelling of cat urine.

I read her comment as merely a statement of fact rather than some sort of condemnation of the decision. I suspect a powerful national organization like the ADL does carry a lot of wait in these kinds of decisions.

I'm glad the ADL chose to sit out the Kelly Donohue brouhaha. Their political capital was needed here.

Of course, knowing Sony at this point, we can expect Matt Lauer to lead off the new round of guest hosts. He's been vetted, right?
And after that they could have Andrew Cuomo, Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby as guest hosts.

I would have objected to the comment, but the ADL isn't what it used to be (I'm a not-too-distant relative of one of its former chairmen). It is much more generic. Still, the animal and blood references were a little uncomfortable. Can't read minds... better not to make a big deal about it and save the objections for obvious stuff like BDS... but the ADL doesn't even care about that any more. I think it relocated to J-Street.

The paperback version of Claire's book will include updates to cover this developing host story. (And will be delayed in order to include these updates.)

His first official taping as permanent host of “Jeopardy!” took place on Thursday at the show’s studios in Culver City, Calif. It quickly became clear that the show’s staff was deeply upset about his podcast comments and the furor surrounding his appointment.

In an emotional morning meeting with Mr. Richards, crew members aired their grievances and disappointment over his past behavior, which they worried would hurt the reputation of the show, according to two people familiar with the meeting who spoke on condition of anonymity because the internal “Jeopardy!” discussions were sensitive.

And a fresh incident on Thursday involving Mr. Richards further roiled some of the show’s staff.

A group of “Jeopardy!” loyalists had gathered for a ceremony to rename the show’s studio after Mr. Trebek, including Mr. Trebek’s widow, his children and Anthony Vinciquerra, Sony Pictures Entertainment’s chief executive. Mr. Richards and Ms. Bialik were there, along with two of the other contenders for the hosting job, the former contestants Buzzy Cohen and Ken Jennings, according to three people familiar with the incident, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Afterward, the people said, Mr. Cohen and Mr. Jennings had expected to attend Mr. Richards’s debut taping. Instead, they were escorted from the sound stage to a nearby green room, where they watched the taping over a closed feed. They were told that Mr. Richards was too nervous to have them in the studio, the people said.

One of the people likened it to inviting Joe DiMaggio back to Yankee Stadium and then not letting him in the dugout.

Sony said that access to the taping was restricted because of pandemic protocols limiting the number of people in the studio. Mr. Vinciquerra did not attend the taping, either.

What a weak move.

That doesn't even seem realistic to me (the alleged reason for not having them in the studio, as opposed to the act of making them watch remotely). If true, it's wild.

I'm getting the impression that nothing this guy does is genuine. With his resume, Richards does not let nerves get to him. This had to have been all about reminding them who calls (oops, called) the shots. I hate just reacting to things, but I'm now saying thanks to McNear.
