Re: Monday, September 20, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
[Raises Hand] I named the NFL player Carlo was recognized as before he said the name.
VENTRILOQUISM FOR DUMMIES - Nothing about Paul Winchell (not J!6 either).
Mayim definitely cut way back on the giddy-ness of her first hosting stint, but something was off with today's game as I was more aware of the host than previous new games.
Too many times Mayim repeated the correct response with, "Who is/What is" and she was not able at first to adjust to Matt's response style. It was like Mayim was looking for a little more from Matt and of course that was not coming unless necessary. It affected the pace a bit though all clues were played.
I do understand that Mayim was hosting with short notice, so I'm not sweating anything that happens this week from the lectern. There's a lot good with Mayim hosting and I'm sure she will settle in well with so many more games to do in 2021.
Matt did not have a runaway and Mayim did point that out. Tracy was listening and went for the possible win, with 2nd place be damned.
The FJ! clue had me match Carlo and nice for him the sole solve earned him an extra grand. I saw the movie first-run and never had an itch to see the movie again. It's not a bad movie; it's just not a Mark movie and I think it was overrated from the hype and raves it got back in the day.
Fortunately, I knew what to do with the substance hint in the clue and the year to solve it. During think music my thought was, "That's not an easy clue" and I'm not surprised it went 1/3. On the other hand I do get why many viewers have seen the movie more than once and will think the clue is very easy.
Matt obviously looked lost at sea during the 30 seconds and I expected a miss. Tracy did not look any more confident, so the overall outcome seemed to be telegraphed.
I can imagine the groan from the other players in the audience yet to play who knew the FJ! clue and were looking to see Matt bounced before their turn.
For six clues in the new season today's FJ! clue will poll the lowest so far.
Matt was a little shy of the lock with his 7000 on DD2, so expect a bigger swing on a DD tomorrow if he finds them.

Dip's an auto-get, though I did NOT know those were ingredients of paint thinner...makes sense though.

I assume I'm not the only one who knew this without the TOM after the word "film." When watching the movie, I never made the connection between the ingredients and paint thinner, but now that I've seen it it's yet another clever aspect to the film. --BobtheFJguy wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 1:34 pmFINAL JEOPARDY! Missed a few clues in Ventriloquism, Alliterative People $1000, and Youthful Pop Stars $1200.
DD: 3/3
FJ:
Seriously? Matt gets away with Picasso? Without even a BMS? Category is Alliterative People. Paloma Picasso should have been said.

The futility continues. I read 'dip' as 'what you put chips in' and obviously came up with nothing.

I was bothered by the acceptance of “Ferdinand” for Archduke Franz Ferdinand, too. Not really even his last name.LucarioSnooperVixey wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 6:03 pm Missed a few clues in Ventriloquism, Alliterative People $1000, and Youthful Pop Stars $1200.

Instaget as soon as I read Dip. I don’t think younger folk realize how much hoopla surrounded the film. There was merchandise EVERYWHERE when it came out.

Bugs me too. But it's in keeping with longstanding repeated precedent, so I don't sweat it. Last names only are accepted in categories/clues that specify alliteration.Spum wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 7:36 pmThis.LucarioSnooperVixey wrote: ↑Mon Sep 20, 2021 6:03 pm Seriously? I wonder if Mayim was instructed to say that this was the first non-runaway game of the season, because she presumably was not in the studio to have known that firsthand.

Never saw the movie and put down Clue just to have something. Although I know dip isn’t one of the weapons.
Good job by Tracy in avoiding the lock despite not hitting a DD in DJ and losing $1,000 in SJ. Glad her flub on monkey in the b category didn’t come back to haunt her.
Nice job by the host.

Re: Monday, September 20, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Good guess, but that's 1984. By 1988 we were waiting impatiently for Ghostbusters 2 to come out the following year.
1988 was a turd of a year for movies. With a few exceptions like Big and Die Hard, most movies Mrs P and I saw that year left us underwhelmed. Who Framed Roger Rabbit--which we saw on our honeymoon--was for us one of the underwhelming ones and we never saw it again. However, the honeymoon fact also leaves my brain with no excuse for waiting until the 29th second to cough up the correct response. It's on the short list of movies I know for sure came out in '88 and should have been considered with plenty of time to write it down.
