I said Jim Davis.

I would have gone Fermi.. couldn't think fast enough.seaborgium wrote: ↑Wed Oct 20, 2021 1:39 am
I wouldn't have faulted Katy for venturing Fermi on the last clue. ("F" IN SCIENCE, $2,000: In the 1940s he developed an improved theory of quantum electrodynamics)
So, two potential answers?

Was rooting for my fellow Saratogian Olivia, but Jonathan was very strong again. Given the dynamics I thought a bigger DD wager was required even though she misfired.
Another Fermi here, although I did get the FJ solve.

Referring to cannibalism as "cuisine" is a bit of a stretch.

46R. 4/4 on big clues. My first thought for FJ was Dr. Seuss but then realized he wasn't contemporary and figured out the correct answer. I went 15/15 before the first commercial break and I don't remember doing that before.
Missed rad and said keen. Missed Rockaway and said Brighton Beach. I should not try to ring in on clues about NYC.
Some clues that I missed that I want to get next time are Anthem, Nick Bottom, Williamsburg, Lucerne, and Saoirse Ronan.

I haven't read the book and have just a dim recollection of the movie. Did Lector refer to it as "cuisine"? If so I retract my statement otherwise I view it as a misuse of the word. Something like "...had a taste for...", "... an appetite for...", "... palate preferred..." would have been more conventional.

I thought of him originally; then started thinking about authors, re-read the clue and figured out who they wanted (it wasn't Garfield related, that's for sure). I just didn't know the author's name, so I probably would have stuck with "Davis" in hopes of getting lucky.

Re: Tuesday, October 19, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Lecter's MO was not that he was just a garden-variety cannibal (if you'll pardon the jarring metaphor)--that he didn't just eat people. He prepared human flesh in the refined manner of a master chef.
I would post a link to the climactic scene from Hannibal but discretion and not knowing how to write the trigger warning makes me think better of it. It's a YouTube search away if you haven't seen it. "Hannibal Lecter brain" should suffice to find it.
EDIT: I should have started this post "Hannibal's MO".

Count me as another who knew exactly what they were looking for but had no idea of the author's name.
Can't believe I missed Feynman and said Fermi instead.

I missed that one too (guessed Einstein) even though I've read Surely You're Joking.... I also had a professor who knew Feynman--mostly as a bongo player. While reading the clue I was a lot more interested in pondering the insight that came to me, that quantum electrodynamics and quod erat demonstrandum both go by the same initialism.

I thought it was great negbait. I came up with Fermi.
William Peter Blatty. Easy to remember, I live in Central Pennsylvania. He went to high school with a guy named Joe Paterno.
Final jeopardy. Had they said 1991 movie. I would have come up with Lecter. The 1981 book left me dead in my tracks. Had I come up with Lecter I would have gotten Thomas Harris. I don't think I could have solved this given no time limit.

Re: Tuesday, October 19, 2021 Game Recap and Discussion (SPOILERS)
Not that it ultimately mattered, given how FJ went, but the challengers certainly had their opportunities to at least make FJ interesting. It was one of the least crisp shows of the season. Yeah, that is skewed by the fact that the season consists of two super champs standing at the champion’s podium.
I simply will never understand not giving yourself the best chance to win over leaving some money (points) behind in case you get the clue wrong. If you miss the DD in that situation, you likely aren’t winning no matter what you wagered. So may as well maximize your chances to win by betting a bundle. If you want to leave a $1 behind just to guarantee a FJ appearance, go for it. Same goes for the last $6,000 that nobody even tried to get. Jonathan had no reason to try unless he had a lot of certainty.
But bright lights and all that. I can’t really argue against that since I have never been there.

The 05-28-21 game had a clue about Mank that you gave yourself credit for.
