I was upset about that when I saw I had tied, until I saw that my opponent (my referrer) had given me 0 for it.
K-Mart owns Sears, so you were close.
Other way around (although I think "owned" is correct, not "owns").
Nope, K-Mart bought Sears but kept the Sears name (and the 'S' stock ticker)

Kmart will buy Sears, Roebuck for $11 billion, the companies announced yesterday...

"This is going to be an enormous undertaking," said Mr. Lampert, who is Kmart's chairman and will become chairman of the new company, to be called Sears Holdings.

It blew my mind that that was the MCWA.

Me too. "Duo" seemed an odd word for two people who were vying against each other.

Pretty bad start to the season for me.

After confirming 2A translated to 42 and not 56 for Joe DiMaggio, I ended up typing in 42 for my answer.

I can't do hexidecimal, but I figured it was either 42 or 56, with the former being more likely. I wonder if anyone put Mariano Rivera in a moment of blindness.
Never been on J!, but once won a knockoff version that aired on local access TV.

It's easy. Like 42 in decimal means 4 10s and 2 1s, 2A in hex means 2 16s and A 1s. The ones places go 123456789ABCDEF. Since A comes right after 9, it means 10 in decimal. 2A is therefore 2X16+10=42.

It was way more math in my head than sports and having no clue about the number (not even how many digits) I guessed (.400, well, .406) Williams.

Yeah, I think many people are too easily scared off by base conversions, when in fact they're quite simple.

Ah, there's the disconnect. The holding company was Sears, but it was Kmart who did the buying. Got it.

It is indeed easy, although the reverse (Hex to base 10) isn't quite as easy to do in your head.

I have a confession: I put the numeral zero after the 9, assigned 11 to A, and ciphered 2A to be 43. I don't know JR's number, but it sounded close enough. I puzzled it out this morning (starting backward from F=15) this morning because the 43 had bugged me and TI didn't reveal that part. Moral: stupid math error and baseball uniform knowledge cancel each other. I have no criticism for the MCWA of Babe Ruth :).

I can tell you Ruth's, Mantle's, George Brett's, and Hammerin' Hank's uni numbers.
Spoiler
3,7,5,44 (I think)
If they ever ask anyone else, I am done. I probably have 42 embedded now, thanks to Hitchhiker's Guide.

The not-Bezos question was dirty pool. If they asked "What name did she write under?" it would have felt at least less nebulous.

Living in Seattle certainly helped me on that one. I also live within walking distance of the high school where Mackenzie Scott's current husband teaches, and where her kids go to school.

My opponent forfeited yesterday, but the only one I missed was Q1.

I see people bitching about the question on the FB group, but I had no idea who she was when I saw her name. But yeah, asking the question the way he did seemed way too "gotcha" to me.

I went with the MCWA of Oprah.

I liked the question because you were expected to know more than just that it was the person who had been married to Jeff Bezos.

From a writing background and being wealthy in what I perceived was some adjacent venture, I guessed Shonda Rhimes.

Six-packed 3 times in 4 matches. Ugh. On the upswing, I hope!
