Bob's job title intrigued me, so I looked him up and found this article from 2005. He mentions being a trivia fan and being on a "major TV show".

John Heacock tried to add to his $1900 against Andrea Merrin & Mark Milett: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=5766
Player Pics:
I could not decide for John whether to use eyes down and name clear or eyes up and name faint and I was all done with it before I recalled I had a pic of John posted from his previous game.
This is the long word that Alex displayed:
No game tomorrow, but I still have more to input next week.

Exactly 100 games in the Archive after you did Heacock's previous win. I'm going to pretend you did that on purpose.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2017 1:31 pm John Heacock tried to add to his $1900 against Andrea Merrin & Mark Milett: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=5766

Another clue I don't even get the wording of (link):
A few observations from browsing this thread:
A few observations from browsing this thread:
Receive weekend passes to receive weekend passes? I don't get it.With reserves called up for the Berlin crisis, pros had to receive these to receive these in '61
As a lover of all things in the weasel family, I ran this category. Cute category box, too.MinnesotaMyron wrote: ↑Sun May 07, 2017 4:42 pm One of my little quirks, back when I was tracking my scores in preparation for getting on the show, was that I wanted the category titles on my scoresheets to be formatted exactly the same as they appeared on screen, with the same line breaks, punctuation, et cetera. That would occasionally lead to artwork such as seen here:
It always bugged me that Jessi Colter sang "I'm not Lisa, my name is Julie." Why not just use "Jessi"? It's not like it had to rhyme with anything anyway.as was the singer of "I'm Not Lisa" who is/was married to Waylon Jennings
What's with the stray "(-$800) - Laurie" in "Where for Art" for $800 (in this game)? Did some kind of clue calculation formula spit garbage into the response? Also, Construction for $2,000 is missing a right parenthesis.MinnesotaMyron wrote: ↑Sat Jun 17, 2017 5:43 pm November 7, 2002 has a scoring correction between rounds that wasn't entirely clear, so I made my best guess. If any of my co-archivists have the actual game on tape, could you check that out, please? (And while you've got the tape out, did Scott really answer just "George H. Bush" for EATER'S DIGEST for $400 (J!)? I rejected a correction suggestion for that just now (how on earth did you all figure out I'd loaded this game last night???), but it certainly could be wrong.

The players were in the armed forces. They had to get weekend passes to be able to play their games. At those games, which were played on weekends, they might receive some passed footballs, i.e. "weekend passes".TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2017 5:45 pmReceive weekend passes to receive weekend passes? Copy and past from Ronnie's archive that I didn't reformat properly. It'll be fixed.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2017 5:45 pm

It's a pun. They have to "receive weekend passes" (i.e. be passed the ball during a football game) in order to receive a "weekend pass" from their military duty.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2017 5:45 pm Another clue I don't even get the wording of (link):

I assume the writers had a source for this in 1986, as being a general policy for pro football players in the reserves, but this recent piece in Politifact suggests it was a rare occurrence, sometimes depending on intervention from the commander in chief:
http://www.politifact.com/wisconsin/sta ... g-green-b/
Edited to add: This 1996 NYT article about Republican VP nominee Jack Kemp (who had been an AFL player in 1961) confirms that pro players were given weekend passes from reserve duty:
Mr. Kemp's roommate on the Chargers in 1961, Ron Mix, a tackle who was later elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was also a member of the 977th Reserve unit. Mr. Mix was denied a deferment, although he was the sole support of his mother and he spent nearly a year at Fort Lewis, Wash., as a cook, traveling to games on weekends.

Proving that I write my recaps but don't read them, I couldn't get the J! round Daily Double correct, even though I did a thing on that location 2 months/8 pages of this thread ago.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2017 12:58 pm Wayland Massey played Jerry Sobul & Bob Barnes: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=5767

I absolutely nailed what the Pavlovs for that location are though, so that's something.MinnesotaMyron wrote: ↑Fri Jun 23, 2017 8:40 pm
The triply-stumping correct response in B.C. for $2000 would show up again for a clue just a month later, May 13, in NEAR EAST ANCIENT HISTORY for $2000. Seeing as that was the Million Dollar Masters Tournament, though, it was not a triple stumper then. It hasn't been seen in as a correct response since, however. I guess the Pavlov prompt would be "Egyptian + Temple + Site"? The location name in a clue suggests a response of Ramses, so maybe (+ Ramses)?
B.C. for $2000: Carved out near Aswan around 1250 B.C., the temples at this Egyptian site were moved in the 1960s A.D.
NEAR EAST ANCIENT HISTORY for $2000: We know Carians were in Egypt from graffiti they carved into a big Ramses statue at this temple siteSpoiler

The game number should be #1643 (not #1693).MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Mon Aug 21, 2017 12:58 pm Wayland Massey played Jerry Sobul & Bob Barnes: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=5767

Why, why, why were glasses so big back then?
I have no room to talk--I had equally enormous ones at the time. And a spectacularly bad haircut. I looked like a cartoon owl.

Did anyone get the "immoral/illegal/fattening" DD? That seems extremely tough.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2017 1:31 pm John Heacock tried to add to his $1900 against Andrea Merrin & Mark Milett: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=5766

I'd heard the quote before, but "fattening" was the only part I remembered.TenPoundHammer wrote: ↑Tue Aug 22, 2017 2:05 pmDid anyone get the "immoral/illegal/fattening" DD? I knew the quote and that they go together (memory is tied to a greeting card I saw once that showed little cartoon people indulging in all of that stuff), but not who said it, so I'm pretty sure I'd have missed it and then facepalmed afterward.

Another ouch on Nathan was in Oh My “Lord”! $2,000 as he added the past tense of eat in his response which cost him from being in contention.MarkBarrett wrote: ↑Tue May 23, 2017 9:00 pm I have completed my dibs call for May with 4/25/02: http://www.j-archive.com/showgame.php?game_id=1751
June - August I plan to set the time machine back a little further and I'll pick back up with S18 games in the fall.
All of the links worked although I'm never sure if I have properly marked them according to Archive protocols.
Fun Alex demo at IT'S A BOY! $1000 and I wonder if there is some other way to mark that clue when the subject of Alex doing things for clues comes up?
Not that it mattered for the end result but ouch on Nathan in TAIWAN $1000 as his guess fit everything except the pinned year.
The video for GODS $1600 is freaky and I may have nightmares.
Even though I've seem the game previously I still could not recall both names for the FJ! clue. Fortunately, I joined the players in only needing the one.
